Hey guys, I'm trying to get motivated to start working on my new project. Its a 68 Camaro I have had for about 7 years. Since I just finished my Dads 1980 Camaro LSx project I want to get started but really looking to get an idea of what direction to take it in. I know I want to build a traditional Chevy big block (probably 427) and it will definitely be in the Pro Touring style (I know BBC and Pro touring don't exactly mesh) Any pictures or motivation is welcomed. Thanks guys!
Heres mine in its current state....

Here's a video of the '68 BBC powered "Reloaded" we finished last year. Big block torque is addictive!

Certainly not in the league with those guys ^ and no where the "best", but I love my traditional BB especially in front of a 6 speed. I'm running a LT1 T56 with a high 6th gear and a 4.11 rear. Its a hoot. 1st kills it and I can just about idle at 60mph.

I would think if you could score an ZL1 block that would be sick.

Search "Payback" on Lat-g.
That is my favorite BB first gen. It is a 69 though.....

Thanks for the motivation guys, I'm really digging this one. I've always liked the no bumper, RS grill look on the 67/68 camaros

You can buy a GM aluminum block but they a $1k more than a Dart or Brodix block. Pace performance still has the GM collectors edition ZL1 427s in stock but they are $25k. For a lot less you could do an all aluminum 540 or 582 with multi-port efi. Check out nyes automotive as they have the best prices I have found so far.
Nyes Prices:
1. BBC 582 with efi - $12.9k
2. Dart aluminum upgrade - $3.2k
3. Billet serpentine assy with ac/ps - $2,5k
Total - +-$19k for 750hp
Note: a hyd roller cam may drop the hp to 700.
ultrastreet.net is also a good vendor to look at. I have an ultrastreet 427 SBC and am happy with it. Good luck with your efforts!

Feel this one, locate some race team that runs aluminum blocks, get one with at least enough to hone for clean straight cylinder. Throw in a 39/427 crank, even if its larger bore, this would kill some of the lower end torque to help with handling in corners.
Throw on a set of good oval ports, keep your cam specs moderate over lumpy/grumpy and maybe look at ebay 4 bbl throttle body(s), build a simple fuel only port FI set up and tune with wideband kit for proper fuel control.
All aluminum make it as light as a sbc or pretty close with headers and such. Order up some Ridetech coil overs in double adjustable and you have good start, add in Truturn and a 4 link from them and your car should handle great and be the most fun youve built in a while.
If I had cash I would build an aluminum 427 from the parts of my 402. Keep the oval port heads, use most of my other stuff and enjoy. BUT alu blocks and heads can be salty unless you do some due diligence.
Wish I could locate some aluminum L98 heads to use in my LT1 Monza project, I'd sell my double humps then. But unless I get offered good cash Ill use a 50+ yr old engine with my LT1 FI intake!!!!!
Good Luck

bbc and pro touring go just fine together, the tq gets you out of the corners, and if you have alum heads and intake, they weigh about the same as a blown ls with all the plumbing, intercooler, etc, etc... i would go bogger than 427 though, 468 at least, 540 better yet! good luck with it, rm

for some reason you cant make more than 650 or so hp with the alum blocks but can go much higher on the cast iron blocks... don't know why that is....
keep in mind you can have a lot of weight machined off a cast iron block and not interfere with its structural integrity.... that is a lot cheaper than an alum one... the diff would only be a few lbs, and you can make more hp with a cast block.... food for thought...

Are you referring to the factory ZL1 block, or to aftermarket aluminum blocks with "standard" displacements (like 427/454)? I've seen a big cube Donovan block make significantly more power than that.
