Greetings,

Before we get started on the build, I just want to clear the air. Yes it know this is -Scrap and might not be everyones cup of tea, but after finding this site through "build-threads.com and scouring it for a few weeks and reading the builds on here I thought id join up. It seems like there are lots of level headed people on here who are more into fabrication than the internet name calling found on many "tuner" car forums. I promise this will be tastefully done but in the end we are all here for the love of cars right?

Anyways a little background.

Neither of my parents were into cars, but my best friend in High School's dad had a Triumph Spitfire which had been neglected and had been sitting for some time. Over the summer of grade 11 got it back up and running and spent most of the summer driving it on the back country roads to his cottage. My uncle had an MG which I "borrowed" to tear around in.

The Spitfire also made for some good light-weight fun on the frozen lake at the cottage

I wanted a car so badly but my parents said i needed to save for school first (makes so much sense now but made for much disagreement at the time.). I ended getting my bachelors in Industrial Design (Automotive Design). It had been the trend at the time to design small compact eco cars so when it was time to do my thesis project I had to do something "bigger".

I ended out doing a Dakar Support Vehicle, which won some awards and got shown at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in the Michelin Booth.

Now on to real cars :)

Upon graduating I got my first design job and undertook my first project.

Here it is in all its glory. A 1990 Nissan 240sx Base Model. Not much to look at (or drive at first) but it had all the right ingredients for a fun ride

Ended out buying a 1/2 a Nissan Silvia from an importers and swapped the standard 2.4L for the 2L turbo.
This brought the power level from 150 (factory) to about 200

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/n504381539_948338_8252-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/n504381539_948338_8252.jpg.html)

Seen here with the MR2 clip we picked up for a buddies project

Ended out getting into lapping days, autos-crossing and drifting

Did a bunch of supporting mods.

Ajustable Coilovers
Adjustable Suspension Arms.
Larger Intercooler
T28 from the newer S15 Silvia (15 Psi Of Boost)
550cc Injectors
Sparco Bucket Seat
Light Weight 16x8 SSR Wheels (11lbs Each)

The car was a blast, But the previous canadian winters had taken their toll on the chassis and it was beyond saving. It was time to let it go.

Some shots of the car before I Let it go:

Not wanting at all to deal with rust, and having grown up in the "gran turismo" generation I promptly found my self a '93 Nissan Skyline GTS-T. Not quite the infamous GTR Model but but it had a smaller ,2.0L high revving straight 6 Turbo and simple RWD for maximum fun.

By no means should any Skyline/Supra/NSX/RX7 not be considered a modern muscle car.

Good luck, these cars are beasts

Subscribed. I purchased a Tamiya Axia Skyline 1/10 rc car circa 1994. I didn't even know what a Skyline was then but I have been a fan since. What are your plans for power?

Thanks for welcoming me/ this build (I was a bit skeptical).

I used to have the Tamiya Calsonic Skyline R/C as a kid it may have got the ball rolling :)

Power Wise I want a responsive 350hp/300tq. Big emphasis on the word responsive here, I have a couple friends who make higher power levels but the lag is unbearable and makes the car completely useless for anything else than highway grudge matches.

I have actually had to car since 2011 but have recently started the rebuild and restoration process. I will update the thread later tonight with more pictures and the rest of the story to bring us up to date.

I'm excited to see this project. As much as i love classic detroit iron there is a soft spot in my heart for skylines. Japanese muscle lol

Love it, I really want something along the lines of a 90's Japanese sports car. I know a lot of people with 240's and they love them.

Very cool. The R32 has always been my favorite version of the Skyline; and the GTS should be a better platform for a "fun" car. My friend has an RB20 powered 240z and another friend had an SR powered 240z. As you know 400hp is just a couple pieces and a tune away.

Keep us posted.

We will definitely accept Skylines here, especially since they did not let us have them in the U.S. The GTR of recent vintage is quite nice, however. Progress!

Its a shame that they were banned in the U.S. because in the end it is just a car. They will be legal next year when the 89's turn 25 years old.

Anyways I picked up the car in early 2011 from a good friend for $5000 as he was moving out of Ontario to British Colombia.

These cars always come from Japan with a few goodies (makes for a cool treasure hunt) The Specs of my skyline were as followed

1993 Nissan Skyline R32 Type-M (Factory aero package, better brakes and 5 lug hubs) 143,000 kms
Standard RB20det 6cyl 2.0L engine
1.5 nismo diff
Greddy/ Trust boost controller.
Greddy Boost Gauge.
Kei Office Coilovers.
Nismo Wheels
Nismo Shift Knob
Adjustable front upper control arms.
and a steering wheel to make Paul Walker Jealous

Enough words, More Pics.

The car had been in a slight front end collision which bent the top rad support slightly. The previous owner had done a quick and easy fix with some 1" square stock as skyline front ends arnt that easy to come by.

I am going to apologize in advance for the varying quality of the next bunch of photos.

I drove the car for much of 2011:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/5562520311_64d057ab57_o-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/5562520311_64d057ab57_o.jpg.html)

My Friend Santiago Owns the nice white Silvia

The Nismo Rims came with 50 series sidewall tires mounted which would rub the bottom off the fender

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/208220_10150145787821540_504381539_68802-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/208220_10150145787821540_504381539_6880221_5417657 _n.jpg.html)

so naturally the First task was to de-wing the car and get all 4 wheels mounted.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/Screenshot20110630at115307PM-1.png (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/Screenshot2011-06-30at115307PM.png.html)

Next was to get rid of the God Awful Momo wheel that came with the car

Picked this up for a decent price (Nismo horn buttons are extremely hard to come by)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/Screenshot20110711at100927PM-1.png (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/Screenshot2011-07-11at100927PM.png.html)

I am a huge fan of the japan highway racer look so the car didnt stay de-winged for very long.

Spent the rest of the summer 2011 enjoying the car, sliding around and chilling with my friends. I didnt have much money and it was my daily driver so a big build was out of the question.

At this time I got a new design Job with a longer commute so i bit the bullet and bought a civic to slum back and forth to work in. Since the condo i was renting did not have 2 parking spaces the car was trailered back to my parents house (300km away)

Not to be left out. i bought it a rock solid container to keep it safe and secure as my parents live in the downtown core and dont have a garage

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_0204-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/IMG_0204.jpg.html)

Summer of 2012 was spent driving home on weekends to try and get stuff done but nothing really major happened.

I splurged on some Super Rare Tommy Kaira aero parts and made it look cool for motivation.

Completed the highway racer look with a GTR bumper, Jun Lip and Aero Mirrors

Deciding that renting a condo was a waste of money I bit the bullet and bought a small house in Toronto. Really wanted one with a garage, but unfortunately it wasn't in the cards. Ended out getting one with a huge 6 car driveway and a work shed with power in the back yard (next best thing haha)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_1184-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/IMG_1184.jpg.html)

Now that I have place to work on the car that isn't 300km away i can start the ball rolling again.

Thanks! I daily drove my s13 for about a week with the SOHC KA and it was unbearable. 250hp in that car was just the right amount to make it fun without constantly having to change tires haha. I miss driving an S-chassis, but with a 60km daily commute there is nothing a reliable and cheap to run as a civic.

Had a slower day at work today, so I thought I would make use of some of the equipment in the office.

In my first post I had mentioned that I went to school for Industrial Design. In my previous job I designed consumer products such as the Spoon for Yogen Fruz (frozen yogurt chain) and all the cases for Simoniz Pressure Washers among other things. Currently I am working at a transit lighting manufacturer, we supply interior and exterior LED lighting fixtures for Various Transit Authorities with the main one in the US being AMTRAK.

Recently i had purchased some gauges to keep an eye on the temps, oil and boost pressure. I knew what I wanted and spent months tracking down very specific Black / Amber HKS Gauges. HKS stopped producing these in the late 90's meaning they are extremely hard to come by with all the sensors and wiring.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/lot_zps36458701-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/lot_zps36458701.jpg.html)

I Lucked out and got a Bracket to mount the smaller 46mm Gauges in the DIN Pocket just above the climate control on the centre console.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/538438_10151149359211540_1293908004_n_zp-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/538438_10151149359211540_1293908004_n_zps563f5b3f. jpg.html)

I really didnt want to make Holes in the dash for mounting the larger 60mm Boost and Oil Pressure Gauges, So I decided on the column mount. In my old 240sx i had my wideband on a column mount pod which I likes. I couldn't find one that wasn't in cheezy carbon fibre finish so that mean it was time for some designing.

took the steering column cover off and mocked up what I wanted with cardboard.

And Printed it.

I took about an hour to print on our printer and is accurate to .001"

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_1994_zps7e753c35-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/IMG_1994_zps7e753c35.jpg.html)

Did a quick mock up with my old Greddy Gauge because my larger 60mm HKS gauges are still in the mail.

We are set to get a CNC Router table June 11th which means i can make a bunch more parts, so i cant wait for that. :seizure:

Have a good weekend everyone,

-Jordie

We built entire robots out of the plastic parts made by these printers. Some printers are even capable of printing in titanium! They parts are more than strong enough for most appilcations.

Great thread man! I have several friends who drive tuned imports, mainly nissans, and there has been several cases where I have taken inspration and ideas from some of their rides for my Corvair. I'm defintely subscribed!

Its been a busy month.

Recently picked this little one and she has kept me super busy. Shes a Shiba Inu pup, and will get to be about 20 pounds when fully grown.

and today (they grow up so fast lol)

I Also did some house tuning. In october I bought my first house (detached bungalow) in toronto's west end. The houses in this area were originally built as cottages so they are quite small and dated on the inside.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_1183_zpsc8c9d456-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/IMG_1183_zpsc8c9d456.jpg.html)

My Girlfriend is an interior designer so there are always little projects to do. Our house has a little loft/ storage area above the bed rooms which used to be accessed by a wooden ladder. In an attempt to modernize it we had a permanent ladder made and attached it to the wall and also added a small "railing" to pretty up the space. Its not to code but is better than not having anything there, as it was before.

here is a quick collage

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/941947_10200652049537466_1571967068_n_zp-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/941947_10200652049537466_1571967068_n_zpscf448d45. jpg.html)

On to the car!

I know ive gone on about the rb20/25 back and forth but recently I settled on an RB20det. While I am down .5l of displacement, they are cheaper, rev nicer, are lighter and i dont plan on making much more than 300-350hp. Not to mention the deal was just too good to pass up

My Good friend Oliver was building this Z

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_0516-1.jpg

He posted a part out thread and wanted $400 for the motor which was refreshed and included, new timing belt, tensioner, rear main seal and new accessories such as alternator. It also has a rear sump pan because it was going into the Z ( I will have to use my old one). But for $700 it included ECU, Harness, MAFS and a Forward Facing Plenum. This was the deal maker, because they are expensive new and i really didnt want to have 4857439878324 miles of piping as the standard intake manifold crosses the valve covers to pipe air from the turbo-intercooler to the intake manifold.

Anyways Here are some of the trendy pics from the FS Ad

With the new house and all the work i want to do there, the rb25 build would have taken lots longer. This way i get the car back up and running again sooner and have more money for an upgraded turbo, injectors and other things.

I like the direction your heading, one question though, are those 3d printed parts strong enough to actually use?

I ran this part as a prototype as we are getting a CNC router next week at work and i will be making it out of aluminum. Our machine cures with UV light meaning the parts will become brittle over time. We are also getting an FDM printer which prints in an ABS like material. These parts are more durable and use the same process as the gun that was printed a few weeks back in texas (of all places :) )

Awhile ago I printed this for my HKS Turbo timer with one of our printers at work. And recently got around to fixing it to my vent surround/ under steering wheel trim piece for my R32.

I am trying to source a spray which will give it the OEM Textured finish. I know SEM makes a product but its hard to track down in toronto.

Here is a quick mock up for my Boost/ Water temp gauge holders I made recently. I most likely will make the holder one piece when i produce it out of aluminum.

This is a phenomenal build. Those R32s have really grown on me- and like others have said, it's different. Nice to see some 3D printing put to use. I'm hoping to do something similar with side marker housings for an LED setup.

Hey Thanks! Its taking a while because the chassis is still at my parents in the container and the motor and other parts are with me in toronto.

but I did a quick coat with Rockerguard. Its flexible and paintable so we will see how that goes. It came out looking pretty close to OEM.

Excuse the poor photo quality but started making a scale replica of my car over the winter. Now it is warm and sunny out I can work on the real deal.

3D Printed areo for my Tamiya model kit.

Now the car is getting the new rad support welded in and the nasty rear dent/ scuff repaired. Hopefully the car will be back in Toronto by the end of the month

Jordie,
Great build. Its nice to see something different. Skylines are just bad ass.
That intake manifold is awesome. Do you have any more shots of it?

Great build.
Do you plan on getting out to Cayuga (Toronto Motorsports Park) when the car is done?
Does your friend with the V8 RX get out there.
I saw s guy there a few years ago with a black one that had an LS1, it was very fast.

Hey thanks! Its definitely tough to juggle the house and car and pooch but i guess thats life. I will take some more shots of the motor tomorrow. I want to start using an actual camera to document this thread instead of my iphone.

Thanks Keith,

I havent driven my car at Cayuga, Ive gone to a test and tune drag night there with my 240 way back when i was in collage but thats about it. We normally head out to shannonville for trackdays but it would be super nice to try something like mosport that has elevation changes once the car is complete. My friend is still in the process of building the RX-7, He competes in DMCC (which is mostly in quebec) so he is focusing more on is racecar at the moment (LS Powered Nissan 240sx). The RX-7 will be his street car once its completed, which should be soon.

Hokey So, made the trek to my parents house over the weekend to get things ready for it to my to my friends (autobody mechanic) for some dent repair and a new rad support. While I cleaned the engine bay and removed the 20yr old dried out wiring harness mounts most of the weekend was spent putting my interior back together. Over the past 6 months I had been searching and collecting quite rare "period correct" black/ Amber HKS gauges. Most of the time searching on Yahoo Auctions Japan (Think Ebay but in Japanese and with way too many bright colours). I was able to track down all the ones i needed and was eager to test fit them in the car.

As i am an industrial designer by trade, I tend to over think small details like this. I was really against drilling into the dash to mount my gauges because A) I think it is tacky B) Because it is nearly impossible to get another dash. The option of mounting them in the A pillar was out too because It looks even worse (my opinion) and its annoying to constantly have bright lights in my field of vision.

A few months ago I prototyped this column mount pod on our 3d Printer. I liked the way it fit in the car and was made the gauges easy to read without being distracting.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_1994_zps7e753c35-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/IMG_1994_zps7e753c35.jpg.html)

Was able to buzz a couple out on our new CNC Router Machine with some scrap textured polycarbonate we had lying around

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/06/IMG_2350_zpsa1af45e5-1.jpg (http://s604.photobucket.com/user/Dolph_KYAS13/media/IMG_2350_zpsa1af45e5.jpg.html)

Went to Home Depot and picked up some "L" Corner Brackets and mocked everything up with an older broken gauge I had kicking around the shed.

Here are the finished products:

Two 60 mm Gauges on the column (boost and water temp) and 3 42mm Gauges in the center "Din" pocket. (Oil temp, Oil Pressure, Exhaust Temp.)

Its been a busy couple of weeks.

I left the car is the above depressive state last time I worked on it. I had removed the old bent rad support and picked up a fresh (used) one from a local importers. My good friend from highschool, who is a bodyman by trade agreed to help with the re-assembly as i had no idea what i was doing. Turned out it was pretty straight forward ( Drill out old spot welds, clamp in place and weld it up. )

and hood fenders re-installed.

It was a huge motivator having it looking like a car again. It was even a bigger motivator attending skymeet (my car should be there next year) which is north americas biggest skyline meetup. there were over 50 cars of all different years and models as well as prizes and awards for many different categories. I spoke before that these cars are "supposed to be modified" and this meetup just drove this point home. Ill let the pictures do the talking...

The next project to tackle on the list is to get rid of the 4 wheels steering (Hicas) which was prevalent on many japanese cars in the early 90's. The car currently has a lock out bar to make it more stable and predictable on the track. I wanted to replace all the rear bushings and and tie rods to get of the old 20 year rubber. I got a rude awakening when I priced out a set of replacement inner and outer rear tie rods, they are a specialty item and cost almost $800 for a complete set.

swapping an a 89-93 Nissan 240sx rear subframe ($100 with all suspension arms at a junkyard) and $200 Energy suspension master bushing kit. Sounds like a better plan than to me. It gets rid of the complicated steering system, I get to delete all the lines running to the back of the car, 240sx aftermarket suspension arms are cheaper and more readily available and saves me $500 vs the OEM skyline parts.

I have the bushing kit ordered through fleabay and am going to try and grab a subframe tomorrow.

Cheers

FINALLY got my car to my house and have been busy doing many little things here and there. I bought a rust free non hicas S13 subframe and have begun the awful task of replacing all the bushings with Polyurathane units from Energy Suspension. I eventually plan on getting all adjustable arms but dont have to resources at the moment so stock arms with new bushings will suffice for now.

The rear dent came out better than I thought. So happy to have the car dent free.

Dont mind the empty bay, Ive been plugging away at the motor as well, Maintenance things such as new gaskets, seals, thermostat and press in -10 fittings for my catch can setup. Just need to order up a new waterpump and i'm good to go.

Going to keep it pretty standard for now and upgrade turbo and injectors later down the road.

I also stripped off the brown paint from the cam covers as it wouldn't cut it for a super 90's build. Instead I made some decals in adobe Illustrator and had them cut in low tack vinyl

I spent about a week making sure the paint cured properly in between the different layers. I am absolutely stoked with the outcome.
I did it one at a time incase it didnt work out, but will post a picture of them on the motor as soon as it has cured.

Quick Snap of the interior/ Gauge Setup

Put the aero back on my car to boost motivation.

It just needs a motor in to get rid of the ugly rear rake.

Got the day off tomorrow for more painting and rear subframe work. Before I go heres some more 3d printer pron

Defiantly going to look into getting a R32 in the next few years being they will meet the 25 year age requirement to get them in the states.

Do you think the turbo timer actually helps? I keep hearing they aren't necessary provided you stay outta boost for a few minutes before shut-down. (Being a non-turbo guy)

Keep the updates coming.

I still cant get over how pricy they are/ will be in the states when compared to here. Honestly, I dont think the turbo timer does much but it was already wired into the car when I got it so I thought I would make it a nice home rather than keep it double sided taped to the dash. If you just stay out of boost the last few minutes of driving as you said, you will be completely fine.

Got a bunch of little things done on the car this weekend including New poly bushings in the new (to me) S13 Non Hicas rear subframe. I am re-finishing the stock arms for now and using all poly bushings, Adjustable arms will be in the cards in the future but for now my money needs to go towards more important things. I have also replaced all the endlinks, steering rack and tension rods with Poly Bushings as well. It is painstakingly time consuming slow work so I hope the end result is worth it.

In continuing with my design ways, I have started mocking up a "ram air" to bring cooler air into the engine bay. I dont know if stock GTS-T rad supports are the same as GTR's or not but I never noticed the opening below the passenger side headlight.

I quickly mocked up the intake to bring air from the vent in the bumper to the rad support using pink insulation foam. Great stuff to work with although it needs to be sealed before fiberglassing can happen. Ill update more on this later.

I have also recently been working with out CNC Router table at work to create aluminum parts and toying with making a coilpack cover to go along with my recently painted cam covers.

When I had my S13 I searched high and low to find this coilpack cover:

Now I have the machinery to make my own I may design one for my RB. I will upload a pic of the design when it is completed :D

I have found the Oil Cap on Ebay but I cant bring myself to pay 100 for it just yet.

Hey Andrew,

Thanks for the kind words. I think I would be afraid of the material breakdown when exposed to oil and heat. I will eventually buy one and add it to my collection of rare and discontinued parts but in the meantime my money could be better used elsewhere.

Most OEM caps are "plastic" but I don't know how they compare to the material that is used in the 3D printers...

Also, can you post more details on the 3D printing machine that you are using?

This build is awesome. Love the 3D printer pieces - very nice. I'm not sure if I dig the 90's valve covers - but it's your car.

Question - Why didn't you spray the aero kit when you sprayed the dents? It has that beater rice burner look to me if you neglect to paint the body kit.

Sadly we only have an Objet 30 Pro at the moment. It is accurate up to .005" and prints but prints in a UV sensitive material (which isnt the greatest for "end use" parts without reinforcement). the material comes in cartridges and is deposited via a print head and cured with a UV light. It is great for mocking things up and has saved our company a ton of money in ensuring fit and ease of manufacturing of parts.

However we were at the suppliers head office here in Toronto (Proto3000) last week and were looking at a new machine (Fortus 400MC) with a larger build tray. The new machine prints in the "FDM" style of printing and works like a mig welder or glue gun. It deposits the material from a spool in customizable layers. The advantage to this system is the selection of materials available ranging from ABS and different grades of Polycarbonate (some of which are FST compliant). This would give our company the ability to print end use pieces for low volume orders where tooling would be expensive.

I do want a real Oil Cap though ( haha you cant just print everything) They are discontinued and pretty rare and wont go down in value at all.

The 3d Pieces will only get better if we get this new machine haha.

In regards to the aero, when I ordered it from Japan it was cut in half to save on shipping. the side skirts and rear valance still need some sanding and fiberglass work to fit 100%. The front bumper needs the "N1" ducts added to channel the air over the intercooler and into the rad.

Finally managed to get the S13 Non Hicas and all the bushings together and painted. Now that project is done and car is back on the ground it was time to work on the interior. And by that I mean take everything apart label all the wiring and start taking out what I dont need.

It started with deleting the rear wiper and escalated from there. "oh im not using the rear wiper any more, ill just remove the wiring and simplify it"

Pretty soon my interior looked like this

I am planning on putting the fusebox in the rear seat delete along with the battery and other electronics. Its going to be alot of work but gives me something productive to do
during the winter while I'm stockpiling parts.

Now onto the fun bit! this weekend I also decided to do some CAD (carboard aided design).

The R32 GTR and GTST Bodies were identical bar the front and rear guards, and the hood latch.
Structurally they are identical.

I've owned 4 R32's.
1 of which was a late '89 GTR.

3 things shocked me so far...
1) that you posted a Japanese car in these forums
2) that you didn't get flamed for it
3) that people on here actually genuinely are interested in this build.

This site rocks! there are so many closed minded people on the net that it's refreshing to see open minded people that just love cars... no matter what heritage they are.

i'm looking forward to this build too.

i do agree that the skyline/supra/rx-7's aren't muscle cars though. I read that way back in the day in scc magazine and thought it was an odd way to label these cars (my second car was a twin turbo 1993 rx-7 R1 (mild street port, ported turbo, sways, springs, shocks, etc..) and never thought of it as a 'muscle' car. :)

Thanks Scott

I believe it comes down to maturity and is the main reason I joined this forum. I loved the builds I saw on buildthreads.com and that directed me here. I havent been one to follow the latest trends (I think lots of the "stance" cars are silly) and cannot stand the flaming and name calling on Zilvia.net (nissan forum). I also enjoy all the custom fabrication that gets done on this forum. Whilst I dont have a big shop, welder or a massive amount of tools, I do spend most of my day designing and doing 3d CAD work (I am a product designer) so I am constantly coming up with ideas and designs. Having a 3d printer is nice too :D

I am neck deep in wiring at the moment (which is new to me), removing all the things I will not be using such as rear wiper, defrost and all the electronic 4 wheel steering components. Ill post up progress when it is all loomed back together but so far the only wires going to the rear of the car are for the lights and fuel pump.

thanks for reading.

So Winter is officially upon us here in Toronto. I had to ditch the shelterlogic garage sadly because it was too wide to fit in the driveway without blocking my front step. I grabbed a all weather car cover on sale
and the car is sitting on jack stands in my driveway.

In Canada we are blessed to be able to legally import Skylines yet our climate only allows us to enjoy them for a fraction of the year. It is what it is.

Since its unbearable outside, I've been doing lots of work in photoshop.

to get back into the swing of things, I did a quick line drawing of my R32 with all the aero on to show the stripe I want down the side of my car. Once my sideskirts are painted and installed I'll have the decals cut in either matte black or dark grey.

I managed to program the .nc file to run the cover on our router machine. I usually use this to cut lenses out of polycarbonate and other simple stuff, this was my first time programming a little more complex. I am by no means a master of this craft but it was fun turning my design into something made out of aluminum rather than 3d printed plastic.

I only had my cell phone to take pics with at work so bear with me

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/11/11109356036_9f77eba689_c-1.jpg

The program ran the part using a .125" tool to do the "finer" details and a .250" tool to clear the majority of the material away. We do have a .0625" tool I would have liked to have used to make tighter radii but didnt want to break it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/11/11109289715_61cb530044_c-1.jpg

The tooling marks are easily sanded down and buffed but it was an interesting process to watch

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/11/11109361856_36b0c9e137_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/11/11109295945_95798aecdc_c-1.jpg

The whole process took about 40 min from start to finish and I'm pretty stoked on how it turned out. It will even look better with the Purple Oil cap thats in the mail.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/11/11109364546_05487a341c_c-1.jpg

It still needs to be finished, sanded and painted. I might try and make one with countersunk hardware as I think it will suit the thinner material thickness and give it a cleaner look.
the owner of my company gave me the go ahead to use the machine whenever I like (provided there is someone else in the building) so I will keep refining the design until It is to my standards.

Once I perfect the program, I might start making vented coil pack covers as there seems to be some interest for them amongst skyline owners.

I am also waiting on some parts in the mail,

- Like I mentioned, I caved and bought the HKS Oil cap
- I am waiting on a GKTECH clutch Fan (60% claimed better airflow over stock and its not 20 years old) and the Adaptor to mount it to my engine (currently out of stock and on back order)
- as well boring stuff like tierod ends and steering boots (AMS had a sale for black friday and I got everything for 70% off)

Its supposed to warm up a bit this weekend (only to +6 C) , I might take final measurements for the cooling panel and cut it as well. we shall see.

Haha thanks for the kind words. I've always been into nissans and have wanted a skyline since playing gran turismo on the original playstation haha. If im ever headed up kitchener way with the car ill swing by, id love to see your project.

It was pouring all day today so I took another crack at perfecting the HKS Coilpack cover. The first one I made needed some minor tweaks to the program.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/12/11162904786_0415e2d235_c-1.jpg

I corrected the tool path to it makes nice clean linear cuts rather than going around the parameter of the letters and got rid of the counterbore holes for the hardware.

I also had some requests to make vented covers as well so I made a couple prototypes in that style.

Back From the Dead.

when I got my car it was missing the rubber pads that cover the clutch and brake pedals. I have been looking on and off for "old nismo" pedals, but quickly relized that they are +$200 and that is way to much to spend on something that gets trod on every time you're driving the car.

So a couple hours in Solidworks and CNC programming I had this:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/12933307014_eba12f5546_z-1.jpg

They mount using #8 countersunk machine screws and the mounting holes are based off MOMO/ Sparco universal mounting patterns.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/12933001913_fc5004c605_z-1.jpg

(Sorry for the Cellphone/ Instagram Pics)

They are cut from a flat sheet and will be bent using my old MOMO pedals as a template.

I then sent my pedals to Centerline Motorsports and had Rene clean up the tooling marks with the sandblaster. I am so stoked on how they look.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/12981900033_562c7d220d_z-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/12982192824_82846e5219_z-1.jpg

also because it was is winter and I lack a garage, I decided to bring life back into my old Tamiya RC car. I found it stashed in my closet at my parents house over the holidays.

Here it is in all its glory. It started out as a Ferrari Enzo Kit (TT-01 i believe). I had this when I was 15 and before I got into real cars. This is also waaay before the drifting boom happened and before any RC manufactures jumped on the bandwagon so It has ghetto PVC pipe "tires" for drifting.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/11973966093_432e1923bd_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/11974079104_16a7ccf75c_c-1.jpg

The plan is to practice solidworks and by using the new polycarbonate printer at work create a replica of my car. I tried doing this with a 1/24 model but the scale was too small. The 1/10 scale will be a lot more manageable.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/11973972793_f916935054_c-1.jpg

I picked up the Tamiya R32 Kit as a base to start from (it actually just showed up today). I really like the detail of their products when compared to HPI and other brands.

Ive started on designing the CAD for the wheels. No one really knows Nismo NS5R wheels let alone makes replicas for RC cars. I grabbed all the dimensions from the wheels that came with the ENZO Kit.

My birthday was at the beginning of April, But due to the ****ty cold weather I postponed my party/ bbq until this past weekend (which turned out better because everyone had their cars out)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/14138122921_9cc6828ebc_c-1.jpg

It was a pretty good turnout for my small street. It also got my motivation back to where it needed to be, I brought the car out of hibernation.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/14138538372_6bc80b8373_c-1.jpg

I ordered a sealed Moroso battery box to relocate my battery (legally) to behind the passenger seat. The box is sealed with an O-ring with the exception of a vent tube which exits the bottom of the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/13954791719_8b2c408d11_c-1.jpg

A while ago I mentioned that I was going to make a rear seat delete cover. I really don't like the stripped out look of not having back seats but didn't want to keep the seats with the rear half cage either. I have been planning it out for some time now and it will look OEM ish when complete. The Idea is to have 2 lock boxes (doors) on either side of the driveshaft hump. One will give access to the battery and the other will provide storage for a small tool kit or whatever.

I started my making some bracketry which mounts into existing mounting holes on the rear bulkhead. (excuse all the sound deadening. I will be properly cleaning this out)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/13954766117_a6539efc9d_c-1.jpg

Then I made cardboard templates and cut everything out of 1/2" plywood. I am not too sure if this is the best material for the job, but Its cheap good for making ridged templates. I still need to cut the openings for the storage lockers in the top panel but the overall shapes fit nicely. The front piece is angled slightly so the whole structure doesn't look like a box and mimics the seat back.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/13954792179_113cf7c686_c-1.jpg

Since the battery is tucked away in the cabin, I machined a bracket to fit where the rear wiper was mounted and bought some remote battery terminals. This will allow the car to be boosted / trickle charged without going into the interior. I got this idea from 95riosnake's build on here (so hats off to you)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/05/13954768107_f573ba037a_c-1.jpg

I also picked up some machined wiper and spray nozzle plugs from the Alloy & Carbon store on ebay. They are quality pieces and I would recommend them to anyone.

I had a decent weekend working on the car. I spent most of saturday cleaning my work shed and swapping stuff from my old motor to my new one. Lots of little work like swapping the pan / dipstick because it had been converted to rear sump to go in my friends 240Z. Got that all sealed up, cleaned all the accessories/ brackets and installed my GKTECH clutch fan. Now I must not have the original clutch fan because I was under the impression that I would need an adaptor to fit but it bolted straight up. There was no way for the adaptor fit. Either way It means that I have more clearance between the fan and aftermarket rad I have.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/14137941579_edd47a7963_c-1.jpg

I have purchased a new clutch and everything is ready to bolt into the car for the mockup. I WAS hoping to get that done this weekend so I could start mocking up the intercooler piping but my friend with the truck and engine crane got busy that will have to happen another time. I just want to get it off the stand.

Many moons ago I had purchased a set of fiberglass N1 vents for my GTR bumper and thought since I couldn't get the motor in, I'd just install them.
I measured 3289472893 times and cut once.

Spot on fitment. UGH. Now I have 2 gaping holes in my bumper. I dont know the best way to deal with this but I do have a couple Ideas. I may either section them to match the contour and glass them back together. Or cut a bezel from plastic (matching the N1 duct shape) and epoxy it in place and make my own. Either way its going to be more effort than I wanted it to be.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/14320947241_b05b90cdb2_c-1.jpg

Since there is a serious lack of cooling panels that suit the GTS-T, I prototyped this last week at work out of .0625" aluminum. It could use a little more fine tuning but overall I'm pleased with the outcome. Ideally I would like it to cover the headlights a bit more. It meets up with the hood quite well though.

Without access to an engine crane and having hacked my bumper up, I thought it would be productive to finally wash the car and fit my aero for some more motivation. My friend Santi came by with his Silvia to help wash the engine bay of the skyline and we ended up taking some pics.

Oh yea and a HUGE thanks to Anti (Martin) on here for sending me a Yahoo Auction link for a set of Tommy Kaira wheels. I ended up winning the auction and got them for a STEAL. They are the same style as the pair of 17's I already have but are step lipped 18x9 +25. One is bent so until I get that repaired / the lips replaced, I will run a 17 / 18 stagger setup.

Just a thought, instead of sectioning those N1 vents, you might be able to shave/sand the flange area to fit flush with the contour of the bumper. The only downside is that it could change the square shaping of the flange.

Very excited to see this car come together, I'm a huge Nissan fan.

EDIT: Beautiful work on that lower kick panel that houses the turbo timer. Looks like it came that way from the factory. :)

Hey thanks for the kind words. I initially started trimming and sanding the edges to contour the vents, but like you said the shape started getting a little distorted.

Plan B was to make my own since I had already hacked the bumper and have nothing to lose. First I measured up shape of the visible part of the vent and cut a pair of them from .125" polycarbonate on the router table at work.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/14361774533_ec40870b5f_z-1.jpg

I then took the existing fiberglass copies and cut the flange off, marked the contour of the bumper and cut it to fit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/14154926179_51a3e00bde_z-1.jpg

I then scuffed up the bumper and plastic "bezel" and stuck it on using a 2 part epoxy. I do not have pictures of this step as it required both hands as well as a lot of taping to get the plastic to form the contour of the bumper.

Next using the 2 part epoxy I glued the inner vent in place, smoothing it out as needed.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/14318455526_380f6faf5b_z-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/14340802624_b03588263e_z-1.jpg

I am by no means experienced at this but at the moment I have nothing to really lose (the bumper wasn't in the greatest shape to begin with). The vent seems to be glued in there pretty solid. Over the next few days I will sand and fill as needed.

Thanks for reading

Fiberglass can be tricky stuff, but the good thing about it is that you can always sand off the mistakes and try again, haha. I do fiberglass and carbon repair for a living (private jet industry) so I know what you're going through right now with trying to make stuff fit properly. :)

The only good thing about fiberglass is that it is somewhat forgiving but I am a little skeptical about bonding it the OEM bumper. Where the vents are positioned there shouldn't be much flex, thus the risk of the filler cracking is lower. Because I used scrap clear plastic to make the bezels, I hit the vents with a little primer to better show the imperfections.

They still need a lot more sanding and filling work before they are truly "finished" but the next step would be to mock up the intercooler to make sure everything clears. I have a friend bringing by an engine crane (hopefully) this week so I can temporarily drop the motor in and figure out where all the piping will go.

Just read through your thread, and I love the attention to detail. I don't know if I mentioned it in my thread, but I'm also an industrial designer! I know exactly how you feel with the struggle of trying to make progress while still serving your innate need to spend ample amounts of time perfecting the details. The details are what makes a car though IMO, so I wouldn't have it any other way. My biggest problem is the snowball effect, I can't just do one project...it turns into 10 projects, each of which branch into 10 more, and so on lol.

Cheers on sticking to the period correct 90's theme, I too grew up in the Gran Turismo generation, and always fantasized about all the fantastic 90s super cars. You should do a bright colored "Tommy Kaira" script down the side of the car like the pic below to really take the 90's look to full term!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I'm jealous that your company lets you use the 3D printers for personal projects, I can use any equipment I want at work except the rapid prototypers because they run 24hrs a day, 7 days a week usually.

R32Jordie
06-23-2014, 06:13 PM
I do plan on running Tommy Kaira graphics down the side of the car to keep the the theme. Ill have them cut in either a grey or grey reflective vinyl but ill keep it below the door line. I have actually located the front bumper shown in the picture you've posted in montreal, but will likely pass because it would just get ruined at my current ride height.

Thats neat that you're a designer as well. What industry are you in exactly? I've been in the industry for about 5 years now and I love it. I started off working in a small design house designing consumer products, Simoniz pressure washers and I even worked on designing the spoon for the Yogen Fruz franchise. I have been at my current job for almost 3 years and they let me use all the equipment. The 3D printers aren't running 24/7 so I have a chance to build small little projects.

On the topic of work, Ive been super busy figuring things out with my career and will be starting a new job after the Canada Day long weekend. While i'm going to miss having the use of the printer and router table (I have a lot of things to make this week), more money is always welcome and the new company seems like it will be a good place to be for a while.

On to the project!

I had a bunch of buddies by on sunday to help put the motor in so I could mock up the engine bay (Intercooler piping ect.) I was fortunate enough to have 2 of the photographers from autoblog.ca to document everything. All watermarked pictures are taken from by my good friend Ronnie Fung. Check out his website: www.ronniefung.com

Lets get the party started.

Then I had to put on my painted cam covers to see how everything would look

Thanks! Hopefully I can keep the bay clean looking.

It was an interesting last couple days in the office, at 2 am the main overhead water main broke and continued running until 4am. The motion detector was set off when the saturated ceiling tiles started to fall. By the time the water was shut off there was 4 inches of water on the floor of the entire office. I got the phone call not to come in because there was a cleanup crew / insurance investigation taking place which meant I had a day to start putting all the accessories on the motor and start mocking up the Intercooler.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/14543441773_85ce2dc357_c-1.jpg

The rebar had to be modified slightly to accommodate the bumper vents and the intercooler but It will be strengthened back up by welding in some plates. I believe I will mount the intercooler directly to the bumper rebar, It is stonger than any brackets I could make and I feel better about it being supported from the top rather than the bottom.

However, unfortunately the bumper ducts will have to be cut on the inside about 1/2" to allow the bumper to fit properly.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/06/14336925207_b1479c619a_c-1.jpg

After fooling around with the intercooler, I bolted on the PS pump, GK TECH clutch fan as well as my new Mishimoto radiator. The previous owner had made radiator brackets by simply drilling flat bar to hold the rad in place. I took some quick measurements and made a quick design in Solidworks.

Friday (today) was my last day at the office (READ: last day to play with the equipment) so I quickly programmed and cut out some brackets. Turns out our vendor managed hardware coincidently has the perfect sized grommet. They fit perfectly! and will be powdercoated along with all the intercooler piping when its ready. I am seriously thinking of getting a smaller router table to run small jobs. I think its worth the initial investment and would easily pay for itself in a year or so.

So I've stalled a bit on the interior as I have been working on getting the Intercooler sorted and simplifying the wiring harness. Its been extremely hot and doing work inside the car is awful.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/07/14526052737_f49254e8fb_c-1.jpg

I mocked up the all the cutouts for the seat delete compartments, I really need to have this piece cut out on the router table as there are to many imperfections (in my eyes anyways :( ) The rear wheel wells also looked less than stellar so I mocked up a cover piece from cardboard which will be made out of plastic eventually. Its not a priority and like I said, far too hot to work on the interior right now.

In order to fit the bumper over the intercooler, I needed to trim down the N1 vents I had previously glassed into place.

I trimmed off 3/4" from each of the ducts and the bumper fit perfectly. I have yet to make a small plate that sandwiches the bumper between the rebar to prevent the bumper from bowing.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/07/14710116774_6a6a3a6cf9_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/07/14732375653_7c3c57fa9d_c-1.jpg

I saved the sprayer from the rear window delete and it just fit perfectly in an existing hole in the bumper in front of the intercooler. I have a reservoir from a BMW which will get mounted under the rear seat delete and hopefully help cool intake temps. This is a 100% unnecessary mod but the devil is in the details.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/07/14525841729_a527266e29_c-1.jpg

Got all the wiring labeled and am now in the process of re locating the fuse/ relay box to inside the car. The only wires coming into the bay on the chassis harness are the headlights, turn signals, horn and ambient air temp sensor.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/07/14525833810_f84f76b109_c-1.jpg

My Tommy Kaira wheels showed up today. I had the pair of 17's already but wanted a full set and came across a set of 4 in GTR sizes (18x9+24) and jumped on them. One has a bend and will have to be repaired but when buying rare parts sometimes you have to take what you can get. I won the auction for $221 dollars so i'm not really bothered.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/07/14709334411_245d04b2a6_c-1.jpg

So lots has changed since I've updated last (by my standards anyways)

We bought my Girlfriend her first new car. Its a 2015 Nissan Micra in SR trim with a 5spd which makes it pretty fun around town. She enjoys it and you cant beat the price and the fact that it has a warranty.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14952459102_5a4c41d58e_c-1.jpg

His and Hers.

Here is the last driveway shot for a while. I test fitted the side skirt so I could take dimensions for the graphics and did them up in Adobe Illustrator. They have been sent to the vinyl shop to be cut. Priorities I know.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14766129059_36472ae528_c-1.jpg

I finally got fed up walking from the front of the house to the shed to get tools and the lack of shade meant it was time to move the car so I could actually make some progress.
I had a good buddy trailer the car to a friends storage unit which is fully equipped with everything needed to finish the project. Its a little cramped but it beats working in the driveway. These storage lockers are rented out as workshops so they are perfect.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14766127909_9b8138ceab_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14952806595_924a1fb8a3_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14766158870_56b0e3bea4_c-1.jpg

On our row of units there is one that does autobody, another for fabrication and a host of people building cool projects. All the resources are in one place to get the project done. I spent most of last week there until all hours of the morning and got all my intercooler piping tacked up as well as made the intake.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14949732411_0f4314b879_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14766158189_300a648789_c-1.jpg

The firewall has been stripped of the brake booster/ master cylinder, clutch master, wiper motor for cleaning and paint. Now the intercooler piping is all mocked up the engine can come out to fill all the unused holes, smooth the bay and paint. I am on the fence if I should buy the lava mat head shield as its not needed but will completely set off the look of the bay.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14766153199_1dc1a4eccb_c-1.jpg

Finally I test fit the wheels on the car. My friend had a pair of 245/40/R18s sitting in the corner so I threw them on. The side wall is a little big and will rub the back of the front fender once the wheel is turned. I think I will end out running a 255/35/R18 and rolling / pulling the rear fenders so they fit and have the biggest contact patch as possible.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14766131370_5d6da4cd9c_c-1.jpg

Thats all for now. Thanks for reading.

Thanks Andrew, Its something different than what is usually posted here thats for sure.

Looks great. I'm considering an RB for my wagon project.

They are great motors, They're rev happy and just sound great. The only downfall is getting parts for them :/

i lived in Japan for a total of 1.5 years and the R32 R33 and R34 are my loves! this build is awesome to say the least. and man you have some excellent toys to build with! lol

Japan is certainly on the bucket list for me. Were you serving overseas? To be honest it is tough not having access to the CNC router anymore, The small imperfections of making things by hand are killing me haha. I have an old co-worker who said they would run parts for me if I need something small made up so at least there is that. Down the line I am looking to buy a small 3'x4' machine I can have in my garage (when I get one)

Its coming along now, The engine bay is stripped (save for the motor which will be out tonight). Thought I'd wheel it outside one last time.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14781889958_599fd01cae_c-1.jpg

Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me so this cellphone picture will have to suffice. I love these wheels.

Hi Jordie, by any chance would you know a good source to find the R32 Tommy Kaira rear bumper and sides? If you have yours for sale, I can make an effort to make it worth your while - as I notice your recent pics don't have them on anymore. Please message me if you can help. Thank you so much!

Hi Jordie, oh I have another question, I noticed with your AutoCAD, CNC and Fabrication background, would you by chance have the ability to reproduce that TK rear bumper lip? Just thinking outside of the box :)

Got the motor out and started Cleaning up the engine bay. First to go was the battery tray as it was a little corroded and dented.

Cut it out and made up some sheet metal pieces to replace the factory metal

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/15095336605_b42a5994a0_c-1.jpg

The metal under the battery tray is stamped for strength to take the weight of the battery. The new metal gives it a cleaner look and a little extra room for wheel clearance.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/15095350705_221e4c4518_c-1.jpg

I also ground down and welded up all the unnecessary holes on the firewall and elsewhere in the bay. Everything was ground down smooth and touched up bondo glass.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/14908664467_651e6c826a_c-1.jpg

I wheeled it out to clean up the sanding mess under the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/08/15092198221_6f8a895640_c-1.jpg

I threw some tires on the 17" Tommy Kaira wheels to roll around on (which need some serious cleaning), and will probably run a 17/18 stagger until I get my other 18" wheel fixed.

Tomorrow Its time to drop the front subframe and continue priming and prepping the bay for paint.

Cheers! This site has lots of great quality builds which is the main reason I joined. Thanks for the kind words, I am definitely learning new skills as I am tackling various parts of the build (although It feels like I'm winging it most of the time).

I made some good headway today. My friend came by and we started by dropping the front subframe in which I absolutely smashed my finger when the upper control arm swung down. Other than that It came out nice and easy.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15112287092_4163480367_c-1.jpg

Dont mind the seam sealer. I apparently got a bad tube or something as it just wont dry 100%. I keep putting off the awful job of scraping it all off and sealing it up again.

As you can see the R32 has a funky double wishbone setup. This mess will all be taken apart, cleaned, powder coated and installed proper.

Next up was a final light scuff and wiper down with wax and grease remover. I cant help thinking that I missed some of the 20 year old dirt and grime but it will have to do.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15112289332_0253f67bba_c-1.jpg

Ready for battle! after masking and cleaning, I gave it a few coats of etching primer.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15112662215_ee137600b7_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/14926093038_25978cc87b_c-1.jpg

And there you have it. Im going to let it dry over night (although its pretty dry now) and give it a coat of filler primer tomorrow.

Looking great Jordie!

Thanks Pal, Sure looks better after this post !

I spent most of last week sanding, cleaning and prepping the bay for paint. It was getting to be a hassle getting the actual paint as most stores are 9-5 and I work in an office and cant really leave. I had initially planned on getting colour matched paint cans and doing it myself but opted to make use of my resources and call on the painter a couple units down from mine.

We settled on a price and he would grab the paint. Perfect. The first challenge was to move the car as It had no front subframe. With some spare wood and good quality casters, I quickly whacked together a dolly to wheel it around.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15034208570_1a0eb07c57_c-1.jpg

Our deal had me do all the prep work (under his eye) So I scuffed the bay down again, washed it and then scuffed it down with Wax & Grease remover. Taped it all off and we were off to the races.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15196143176_c2679e4fb1_c-1.jpg

I settled for Ford UH Black. I was undecided for a while but noticed my Co-workers Lincoln in the sun and had to have it.

Paint Can Pic.... Exciting

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15032602937_8c6e5a2264_c-1.jpg

Anxious and with my good camera in hand, I thought Id snap some pics of my friend Peters mini project

How many axle stands does it take to hold up a mini?

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15032607988_c16e1c42e4_c-1.jpg

Full minitec subframe swap to accomodate the Honda motor. Should be fun when its finished.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15032507870_6a358da3bb_c-1.jpg

A few coats of paint and 2 coats of clear later, it was finally finished

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15220839365_cdaf2e7df2_c-1.jpg

It looks so good, Not overly flashy at first glance but up close in the sun it will look amazing. The metallic colours will really compliment
the Valve cover paint job and the whole HKS livery theme.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15034253588_88be5f08fd_c-1.jpg

Now its time to clean up and spray the front subframe and CAREFULLY reassemble it all.

Cheers,

Thanks Andrew,

So not any major progress on the car. I've started cleaning up and re-assembling the engine bay. Now that the engine bay is painted, everything else is starting to show its true age.

I started off by removing the oil pan because I was skeptical of the sealing job it did a year ago in my shed. Having the right tools helps out a lot and the pan could use a fresh coat of paint anyways.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15192929500_0c9141ece7_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15379592465_517f4029cf_c-1.jpg

The motor was ready to go in until the last exhaust stud broke on the exhaust side. Thats sidelined putting the engine in the car until I can get it out. Hopefully I can carefully heat it up and work it out with an easyout.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15192943040_d87b96d5c2_c-1.jpg

Next I tackled the steering rack. I Disassembled everything, cleaned primed and painted everything. The boots got replaced as well as the tierod ends. New front lower balljoints came in as well and will be pressed in this week. Suspension wise, all the bushings have been replaced so the car should feel much tighter than before.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15379598865_9fe7c001e7_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15379600665_eeca23e6de_c-1.jpg

I am pretty happy with how the rack came out, It looks new.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15192937590_f5bddc8985_c-1.jpg

Excuse the left steering boot, it put up a good fight but I finally got it on.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/09/15192939440_086a98821d_c-1.jpg

I wire wheeled the brake booster and wiper motor and gave it a fresh coat of bedliner. I have a feeling there will be a lot more textured/ wrinkle black paint in this engine bay. it compliments the glossy metallic ford paint really nicely.

My solid steering rack bushing and braided clutch line should be here this week, Hopfully I can get that broken stud out so I can start final assembly and finish the wire tuck.

Cheers

My thoughts exactly when I was parked next to my co workers Lincoln hah.

So ive been super busy carefully painting, cleaning and reassembling the engine bay. I got the motor in on Thursday Night and I have to say It looks Fantastic.

First a quick trip down memory lane, This is what the car looked like when I first picked it up

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/600183_10150817010061540_418226159_n-1.jpg

So ill let the pictures do the talking:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15436452372_dc7c93d44c_c-1.jpg

I also had the turbo elbow re welded so the wastegate is plumbed back into the exhaust. The car doesn't make enough power yet to warrant an external dump at the moment.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15433602441_16a69884b7_c-1.jpg

Unfortunately, I was unable to remove the broken stud from the head. I tried my best but no luck. due to the time constraints, I made a simple bracket with a bolt and lock nut to put pressure on the manifold to ensure it doesn't leak. Its kind of a ghetto fix but it really isnt that noticeable unless you know what youre looking at. I will most likely build my spare head over next year as the missing stud and quick fix bugs me a lot.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15250215568_ceac93aa21_c-1.jpg

I hope to have most of the wiring tucked and finished by later tonight and will have my blowoff valve and intercooler piping welded up tomorrow.

It is really good to see that kind of attention paid to a build. Are you pimping this build on any Nissan forums? What's the response?

I love that it is getting a lot of positive responses here!

Can't wait to see the whole color in that new black, love the way it looks.

Did the stud snap off flush, or is there anything left to grab onto? If there's something left to grab onto, try the wax method. I was shocked when I tried it on an exhaust manifold stud, but it worked like a charm.

Yea, I love the fact that people on here can appreciate something completely different. I have recently put this build on Zilvia.net and its receiving some good feedback as well.

Had some time to work on the car today and started by installing tierod ends.

As i stated before, 95 Maxima ones are compatible with R32 GTS. I knew the old ones were worn out but I had no idea they were this bad.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15451136947_bcb51014e5_c-1.jpg

Also, The old brake master was also replaced with one from a 91+ Pathfinder. All the lines were run and the callipers were cleaned and painted ricer red for some extra horsepower. Both fenders were mounted as well as the lights. Some massaging of the front fenders will be needed so the GTR bumper lines up 100%.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15450491529_9aab29e83b_c-1.jpg

I'm stoked that I no longer have 39048230984 feet of intercooler piping. Now its just 2 short pipes and 4 couplers.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15638114112_9421da8c1d_c-1.jpg

turned out Vibrant didnt have a flange for my Blitz BOV (I Cannot STAND HKS SSQV Sound) As I am tight on time I got a hold of a greddy flange and modified it to fit the BLITZ. Please excuse the sealant, I will clean it up later.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15634459411_70d4ea6b99_c-1.jpg

As of now, all the hot side piping is clamped and ready to go. The intake is also in snugged up and in its final resting place. The stock rubber intake was replaced with an aluminum one I made from some scraps I had leftover from the universal Intercooler Kit. I finished it off with a HKS filter, purchased through FRSport.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15450484749_cb49b93903_c-1.jpg

The devil is in the details.

Keeping up with the little details, I've replaced the old hard rubber hood stoppers with brand new ones.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15053320304_0ce49f8a77_c-1.jpg

Since all the hicas garbage has been removed, I now only have 1 hardline going across the firewall. The plastic factory clips were brittle , cracked and mostly crumbled away to nothing when I stripped the engine bay. To solve this I inserted #10-24 Riv nuts in the existing holes in the cowl and used Stainless button head cap screws and little "P" clips to hold the brake line in place.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15674871082_563fcb0ed0_c-1.jpg

Black clips would be Ideal but these do the trick for the time being

I got the OEM GTR bumper fitting as best as I could with the stock GTS fenders and corner lights. It is about 95% right now. There is a gap of a couple mm where the wheel arch on the bumper meets the wheel arch of the fender. This is unavoidable when putting a GTR bumper on a GTS but I doubt it will be that noticeable once the bumpers are painted.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15487887438_14db0e2d2d_c-1.jpg

GTR fenders are slightly wider so brackets will have to be to bolt into existing holes under the cornerlights to "suck" the bumper so it meets up with the stock fenders.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15487888418_9d4b8391e2_c-1.jpg

As you can see, I also got new belts. For those who have an RB20 and need belts the Alternator is Pn. 4PK870 and Power Steering is Pn. 4PK0945.

The wiring party kicked off last night as well. The fuse box is getting relocated to the glovebox and the harness is getting simplified to remove all the unnecessary wires that were for AC, retractable lip and other things that have been removed from the car.

As a bonus, The brake fluid level sensor connector is the same on the Pathfinder BMC as the OEM skyline one so that was kept and extended,

The car came with the useless projector headlights from factory and were changed for N1/ early GTS style headlights. Like the A/c all the unused connectors and wires were deleted. As of now the only wires headed to the front of the car are Headlights, Turn signals, Horn and the brake fluid level sensor.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15674874462_671ceda188_c-1.jpg

once finally tested, everything will be loomed up and tucked under the top rad support.

The stock boost gauge sensor has been relocated to behind the radio along with the wiper regulator.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/15487406589_b71767910f_c-1.jpg

I hope to have a lot of the wiring buttoned up this weekend, I cant wait to get everything back together.

I joined this forum recently and still finding my way around - I thought I would be the only guy on here doing the Skyline stuff. That last picture with the dash removed and the wiring rats nest gives me chills - we still have to do the wiring on my second project. I am just starting to build a web site, and will be adding more projects over the next few months. You might like to see my RB20/84 RX-7 project, which is already on my web site here:

stilettoman.info

I read on some of the Skyline forums or Nissan forums about problems with the coil packs overheating and the wires getting brittle from the heat trapped under the center cover of the RB20, so I machined out the stock cover and inserted some perforated metal. I also did not like the PCV fittings and plumbing cluttering up the top of the motor, so I moved the vent fittings to the sides of the cam covers. I am just running stock power, but you may be generating a lot of heat, might want to consider doing something similar with the center cover.

You might also want to look at my Studebaker project, if you have not seen it:

So I'm still in the midst of doing my wiring. This past weekend I neatened up and tucked my engine harness.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/15187422234_a1a73b6698_c-1.jpg

It took a good half hour to de-loom the stock harness. It being my first time wiring had some friends come by and point me in the right direction. started out on the passenger side as it is simpler.

I started out by re-routing the harness through the firewall in one of the old A/c Holes. I routed the silver resistor (?) box and mounted it behind the dash. Running the wires through the firewall seemed like a no brainer because rubbing through harnesses is the worst.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/15621485688_91d5a9a8c6_c-1.jpg

I extended the Wiper harness so it could be hidden along the seam of the firewall/ wheel arch and shortened the MAFS wire. All that is left on the passenger side is the 02 sensor.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/15783860956_7e98fdfbd1_c-1.jpg

The only things that needed to be adjusted (lengthened / shortened) was the TPS plug, IACV Plug and the connector that goes to the ignitor.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/15622039110_e6c527d019_c-1.jpg

Ratsnest of depression.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/15806868735_a457f5b92d_c-1.jpg

Came in the other day and found these on my windshield. :2f2f:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/15621055459_db0167a067_c-1.jpg

Once I was satisfied with how everything was routed, I pulled it all out and re-loomed everything.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/15783218736_7ee1f88252_c-1.jpg

I dont really have a great picture of the finished product, mostly because the unloomed chassis harness and partly exposed coilpack harness makes everything look ugly. The best part of this manifold is that everything can be hidden under it. It does look 9032849023 times better in person.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/11/15622130178_40c7effd2d_c-1.jpg

All my AN fittings and Lines for my fuel setup will be in tomorrow so expect an update on that shortly.

So Back from the dead!

Haven't updated for some obvious reasons.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/17140397801_f27f650e6f_z-1.jpg

I do not have a garage which makes for very slow progress during the winter. If any.

I spent most of the winter browsing for parts but had a tough time pulling the trigger on anything as the canadian dollar was (still is) very weak.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/15731414068_dbcd79c94e_c-1.jpg[/url]

The above picture has been my wallpaper at work over the course of the winter and I found myself absolutely hating how the car looked with 18's in the rear lowered with stock arms.

Adjustable arms were needed next. I managed to locally source (CDN dollars) new driftworks toe arms and ISIS Pro RUCA's. Being a brand whore im kinda bummed I couldn't source some brand name parts but it is what it is.

This past weekend was the first nice weekend we have had so far so it was time for a little driveway tuning.

Oh and I bought a new daily. My 98 civic was on its last legs and this came up for the right price. I've wanted one forever.

Hokey So. Last year I thought it would be an awesome idea to do a wire tuck on my chassis harness and started racing against the clock to get it done whist the car was at my friends shop. Long story short I ran out of time, got discouraged and left the car looking like this:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/17878084921_957db77ff9_c-1.jpg

Awesome.:ugh:

Having ZERO automotive wiring knowledge meant I had no idea where to begin. Eventually I knew it had to be completed and I am too cheap to take it to a shop to complete it so I had to do it myself.

So naturally I started with something completely different. My remote battery terminals. I have relocated my battery to behind the passenger seat. With the 4 pt (soon the be 5pt) cage in the back, having seats back there is completely useless.

Enter the rear seat delete (mockup)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/14526052737_f49254e8fb_c-1.jpg

Streetcar > Budget wannabe racecar. I hate the stripped out caged look so I took it upon myself to make a rear "shelf" / Storage unit for the back. My Del Sol has little lock boxes so no one thieves your stuff when the roof is off and I thought something similar would work well in the R32. I am undecided on what material to make this from. Plywood was cheap and serves as a great material for mocking everything up.

The intention is to use FC RX-7 Storage bins; One for the battery and the other to store a small emergency toolkit. Similar to this:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/interior2-1.jpg

Back to the remote terminals. Relocating the battery to what is essentially the middle of the car would make accessing the battery a pain. I machined out a bracket to utilize the mounting points for the rear wiper (which was deleted)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/13954768107_f573ba037a_c-1.jpg

and ran the battery leads to the passenger side rear seat.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/17877575715_5573cea04c_c-1.jpg

Oh and if you're planning on doing any extensive wiring, do yourself a favour and get one of these:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/17878134495_64b3db0b0f-1.jpg

You can adjust the tension and they cut perfectly smooth. No more sharp jagged zipties. your hands and arms will thank you later.

Back to the task at hand. I slowly started making sense of the wiring harness, the online diagrams were terrible and super pixelated. By breaking it down into smaller sections everything became manageable.

being Garage/ Shopless meant working outside.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/17690202090_deae6ebdbb_c-1.jpg

Many of the components that were located on the firewall were relocated behind the centre stack. Heres the wiper regulator and stock boost gauge sensor.

All electrical systems go! (First time in oh.... 4 years)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/05/17690205990_8fec6e0335_c-1.jpg

I put my interior back together as all that is left is to wire up the gauges. The plan is it have a fused terminal block for constant and switched power to allow me to easily add accessories in the future.

Im so stoked that this is behind me. It was such a huge hurdle but didnt end out being that difficult.

My catch can should be done this week. The parts have been laser cut and just need to be bent and welded up. Hopefully Ill be adding fluids this week and starting it up in the near future.

Yea tell me about it. It all looks like a mess until you break it down into smaller sections.

Thanks Andrew. Yea its tough but now the weather is decent its full steam ahead. The latest obstacle is being able to buy things locally. Meaning i have to order stuff online and wait :/

Thanks for sharing your build and proving how awesome this forum is.

Cool ride and strong work on the CNC goods.

Hokey So. Busy month or so, the really big news is that I am now engaged. I designed the ring myself in solidworks and with the help of the jeweller had it made up. Super excited about this :)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18720538910_b40459cb4e_z-1.jpg

It has also been super rainy for the past couple of weeks so not much could be done.

In the spirit of Le Mans

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18719212740_a04945f3b5_c-1.jpg

As a recap, Nothing off the shelf would fit anywhere neatly in the bay. I had an old rectangular Greddy unit but the fittings were the wrong size for the -10 Raw Brokerage fittings I had pressed into my valvecovers.

I quickly made up a cardboard template to fit behind the passenger shock tower

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18901645912_ffdea1393d_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18902528562_1de7ed2b1f_c-1.jpg

Clearance to the wiper motor was extremely tight. I then designed it out of sheetmetal in solidworks and had the flat pattern waterjet cut.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18906906295_9a4a5131c0_z-1.jpg

Rene @ Centerline Motorsports bent and welded it up for me. Luckily he had an R32 in his shop for some work so we were able to mock up the brackets using threaded holes in the engine bay.

I hit it with a quick coat of Duplicolor Bedliner to match My brake booster and wiper motor.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18901653862_234fd151ce_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18284356824_0032b31663_c-1.jpg

Fitment is 100% on point. There is just under an 8th clearance between the wiper motor and the catchcan. I still have to make the line which goes from the catch can to the intake but making AN lines gets old really quickly so I will finish that up in the next little while.

Apart from that, My interior still looks like a disaster and I have to take the dash out again to finish looming everything up

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18880624016_cec19129ed_c-1.jpg

But I did finally manage to find a set of RX7 storage bins for cheap.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/06/18719243558_9027dd5c70_c-1.jpg

Not a big update I know but I have most of the parts to finish up many aspects of the build. Clear weather this weekend means I can actually get some stuff done.

Thats all for now.

Forgot about this. Recap from my Zilvia thread. Annual update?

Although winter is hanging around, I graciously got a call from Martino who said he was willing to trailer my car to his shop.

So friday night we did the switcharoo and I drove the S15 to my place and we trailererd my car back to the unit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26380157245_89f5269af8_c-1.jpg

It was fun to drive a quick car again as ive been driving hondas for the past few years.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26357529515_4bfef15b27_c-1.jpg

got the car to the shop and got to work pulling the pan and resealing the oil pickup. Not the most fun job out there.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26287889432_aa77998c5e_c-1.jpg

Then got to installing the GKtech calliper spacer kit and the R33 GTR rotors.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26357510755_723075c457_c-1.jpg

They really do fill up the wheels nicely :)

Before:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/24762185752_93ef852868_c-1.jpg

After:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26291292021_c8aecd6c66_c-1.jpg

I replaced the rear pads and rotors as well with cross drilled and slotted Z32 disks. Just a couple more things to get ready before insurance goes back on May 1st :)

Oh yea and get this fixed...hopefully its repairable but I have my doubts :ugh: I'd love to run the 18s all round this summer so fingers crossed.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/24901952206_284b137631_c-1.jpg

Absolutely blown away that Precision Rim Repair was able to get this straightened out

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26764837800_db8e2b07cd_c-1.jpg

Whilst I was waiting for my 1 one wheel to get finished I had a pair of 255 35 18s ZESTINO Gredge 07RR tires to see if I could run them all round.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27039386165_84eefba85a_c-1.jpg

The adjustable upper arms I had were of course seized and put up a fight. after spending the better part of an afternoon freeing them up and adding camber the 255s were still little tight for stock GTS fenders.

Tuning is always better when pals come by.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26436460213_31788d7773_c-1.jpg

I ended up going with a 225 40 18 up front which easily cleared the fenders.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26944985642_ed776932d6_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26764831950_b23bcee4c0_c-1.jpg

It snowed here today so next weekend Ill play with the coilovers and lower it back down a bit and get the alignment set.

Almost there now :)

This past weekend I installed some swaybar endlinks to replace the old broken ones. Moog S chassis endlinks are Beefy. I replaced the rubber bushings with the ones I had lying around from the energy suspension kit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26945974942_f796b09dcb_c-1.jpg

After that I got around getting the alignment to the point where I can drive the car without completely destroying the tires.

When I was working on the front I made sure both coilovers and adjustable arms were the same length. Still the car sat all funny. So I took the coilovers out and determined that whomever had to coilovers before me and had one "replaced" on of the R32 ones with one from an S Chassis and switched the top hats.

The result is one upper control arm has to be .5" longer and one coilover has to be 1.00 longer for the car to sit the same on both sides. Awesome.

despite all that, I got the car together and took it for a little nervous drive around the block. No issues aside from a low idle some belt squeal and a little rubbing from the pads on the rotors.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/26618818943_6dfc03afca_c-1.jpg

Please excuse the front ride height for the above mentioned reasons.

With all these little issues, I didnt feel comfortable driving it to a pals bbq. Martino look me with him in the S15. I was pretty bummed I couldn't drive there but I had a great day of BBQ's and cruising around.

The nice weather is coming quick. Not too much to update as I have been super busy getting everything ready for the wedding on July 30th (which I will be driving to)

Had some friends by this weekend to knock some things off the list. We were all set to go the alignment and get the suspension all set up. Rolled the fenders to fit the wheels. We needed to add a bit of camber to get everything to fit perfect but Maxed out, the ISIS RUCAS only gave us 1 degree of adjustment. Awesome. Maybe I was sold S14 ones by accident or they are just really poorly designed.

I also added a cross bar to my cage for obvious reasons.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27574590651_59b308a893_c-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27038437653_84ba1d234f_c-1.jpg

I know there were dreams of a rear seat delete but after driving around without an interior I realized I cannot deal with the noise. Maybe further down the line I will work on something but for now the seats provide the noise insulation I need.

The list is getting real short now, just a few things needed

-New RUCAS which actually allow for adjustment.
-Set Timing on the motor
-Before setting the timing, install aerocatch latches as my hood release cable broke.
-Install new highflow cat and get it Etested

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27038342633_abb5b598b1_c-1.jpg

I love how the car looks now. The full interior really makes the car feel complete

Some fine tuning of the suspension and it will be perfect

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27370328970_83853a4386_c-1.jpg

-Replaced old Chinese front upper control arms with some Nismo ones I scooped from an importer.
-Bled coolant
-replaced valvecover gaskets
-adjusted the clutch

Drove around the block (a few times) to make sure everything was good. No awkward noises or clunking so it was Etest time.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27915536496_16cd3cdbd6_c-1.jpg

Despite the super low idle, it passed with flying colours.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27670457930_83424f29d3_c-1.jpg

Sorry for the crappy photos. I just needed to prove to everyone its out and about and not on a trailer haha

Im just driving around with a big idiot grin on my face.

First couple of drives were a great success. The car definitely needs an alignment. I had a bit of vibration on my quick highway pull but I believe the cause of that are the tires fighting each other.

Quick run up to the unit under its own power for the first time since 2011 :hsdance:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27971542795_b9afecbb54_c-1.jpg

Reunited together on the road at last. :hey:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27869816252_1d44bd02e1_c-1.jpg

I drove the car to work for the first time on Monday. It felt awesome to be behind the wheel again after so long.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/27515304044_ea66c1d5d1_c-1.jpg

So i have just been working out all the small issues as they come up. Remember that vibration at highway speeds? I found the culprit, Luckily when pulling out of the unit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/28130622385_43a3ac3a6b_c-1.jpg

I have never seen anything like this before. Back to stock Z32 rotors and upgraded pads for me. Im super lucky this didn't fail at highway speeds.

I got an alignment and the car drives beautiful now. The Zestinos are super sticky and the car corners awesome.

However I have an issue which I have read is common on S and R chassis cars. The issue being my passenger side wheel protrudes about 3/4" further than the driver side

Drivers Side (RHD)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/28052051651_ec876657c0_c-1.jpg

Passengers Side

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/28027093462_9c83965e61_c-1.jpg

Nothing is bent, cracked or broken and The car drives amazing. My bet is that the alignment is square suspension wise but the body is not square to the alignment (if that makes sense) I have booked in with the alignment shop for Friday to see if we can figure it out.

The last issue I have is breakup at 4000RPM. it feels like the car hits a wall. Im going to check the coils, MAFS and plugs. Im sure the gas that has been sitting in the tank for 6+ months isnt helping at all either.

All small issues which will get sorted out soon enough.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/28095917406_b61145f10a_c-1.jpg

90s Vibes all round

What a busy week last week.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/28251865655_2ccf04c849_c-1.jpg

Did some measuring and head scratching and realized that the rear quarter was pulled out slightly more on one side than the other causing my one wheel to poke more than the other. I pulled the fender a bit and now the rear fits great.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/28251874345_61d95111d1_c-1.jpg

As for the misfire / hesitation @4K we tried everything. MAFS, Coils, Plugs, grounds, exhaust and everything in between. After 2 nights of scrambling, We then turned our attention to the fuel system and the culprit ended out being the inline -6an fuel filter.

Car runs great now.

Oh you have no idea lol. Wait until he posts why I was stressing out about him finishing his car last week.

Yea about that. A local publication had contacted Martino to do a mini video / writeup about 90's japanese cars and needed my car and his for the shoot this past sunday. Fair enough. Sunday morning came and we met at 8 am and set off.

We cruised around to "kill time" as the people we were meeting were behind schedule. No bother we grabbed a good breakfast and hit the road. It was roughly 200km to the track

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/28217802506_0521799baa_c-1.jpg

I was a little worried as it was the furthest i had driven the car since it was put back together. I kept falling off the Martinos bumper as I dont have a 6spd . got a text saying we needed to speed up and get there so it was hammer down.

Got to the track turned the corner and ....... SURPRISE...

(sorry for the video screenshot)

Thats right. There was no photoshoot, no "documentary" instead it was a surprise Stag & Doe / Bachelor skidpad party all rolled into one which. Martino , Fiancee and Friend Tim had been planning for months.

I had no Idea.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/07/28281176766_e6a9d21f54_c-1.jpg

Everyone was there. It all made sense now, all the posts looking for tires, race gas and how everyone was at the shop rushing and stressing to get everyones car back together. Not one person slipped up and mentioned it which was amazing.

We had a great turnout of about 20 cars (each car was a single colour and included all body panels :hsdance: ) and 50+ people family friends and their friends and 1 doggo.

COngrats on getting her done. Nice work and attention to detail. Are you pleased with the results? What kind of power does that RB20 make? I'm seriously considering picking one up in the states and in the form of a GTS-T 4 door (they call it a type M, whatever that means) and I'm wondering if I'll be happy with the power or if I need to just pony up and buy a GT-R.

Are you talking about Apex Motoring in mississauga? they did the alignment on my car. super good group of guys. How old of a skyline is your friend looking for? there are a few R32s on kijiji or he could go through the import route through either Right Drive or Feast Auto.

I've always been into Nissans so I dont know anyone in Mitsubishis

Wish I weren't so far away, would really like to go for a drive with you guys. Of course most would have quite a bit of power on me. My RB20s, both of them, have had the boost raised to about 13 pounds, but I did it myself by adding an external spring to the wastegate pushrod. I am guessing I have about 230-235 hp at the flywheel, so I must have about 200 wheel horsepower. Nothing amazing, but it keeps up with traffic.

The RX-7 is actually pretty quick, at 2500 pounds, but the Studebaker weighs 3100, so it is not so quick. I really can appreciate all the work you have done. I first started doing suspension and brake mods with a couple of my aero engineering professors back in 1965, but I have never been fascinated with high horsepower. I have always believed that anything with more than 400 horsepower belongs on an airplane!

I think of Mark Donahue's reply when some automotive reporter asked him "How do you know when you have enough power?" He replied "When you can leave two black streaks of rubber from the exit point of one turn to the braking point of the next turn, you have enough power."

I must say, living just an hour and a half south of the Canadian border I am a bit jealous of the JDM machines you guys can get up there. The R32 and S15 especially.

Also, I've never heard of a Stag outside of Erie, and one combined with a surprise track day is genius.

Hey Ben. I've been following your build on and off for the past little while. it looks like its come together nicely.

my RB20 is at about 1 bar of boost and is running a Mines ECU which makes all the difference. In the end I would love around 300 hp at the wheels.

Now I'm back and enjoying the car again. Its nice to have time to work on things again.

I really need to finalize the wiring for the undercar lighting as well as put the Tommy kaira livery on.

I am already getting power hungry and might have to chuck a rb25 turbo on in the next couple of weeks as well.

Love how it's coming along, I'm an aussie and there is a huge abundance of skylines imported there, including my brother I'd say I know 10 other mates who have/had R32s,33s &34s both 2 and 4 doors, most built for drifting but there is certainly no better package than a skyline, I tried to be different by getting an RX7 but nothing beats a skyline for options and aftermarket product availability. Still to this day, the fastest car i've been in was my best mates 32 (RB25/30) that would slide off the clock at 180kmh in mid 3rd gear still sideways.. Enjoy the RB20,300hp can be done fairly easy, we like to preach that a 25 can be built to 500 RWHP with just bolt on modifications if done right. Any more and you'll have to open her up.

Yep they are slowly starting their invasion. Its the worst because the demand (prices) for all the prices have gone though the roof. If I was smart and had the cash I would buy some MKIV Supras and sit on them for a couple years and sell them when they become legal.

its not all fun and games though. I have also been trying to diagnose a misfire in cyl 6. It only happens in the mornings after the car has been sitting over night. I believe that fuel pressure isnt releasing and causing the fuel rail to drain into cyl 6, thus flooding it in the am.

I came to this conclusion by pulling the fuel pump fuse and burning all the gas in the rail. the next morning it started just fine.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/09/29671375156_92c9281b5c_c-1.jpg

Its hard to diagnose because after its been sitting all day it fires up and runs no problem. ah the joys of owning a 25 year old car.

I love the new decals. Nice work, its a beautiful car!

Thanks!

I've finally got to the bottom of the misfiring issue I think. I checked the ECU for codes and it came back saying MAFS and Coolant Temp Circuit. I cleaned the MAFS and ordered a new coolant temp sensor. I also switched the ECU for a mines one I had as a spare.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/09/29614417152_38c5c9a499_c-1.jpg

I'm kind of skeptical using this ECU because I'm not too sure what it is exactly tuned for. I'm assuming its the standard speed cut and a tune to correct for basic boltons (exhaust, intercooler, BOV ect.)

It came from a buddy who used it for a couple years in his car and he swears by it. Plugged it in and the car runs much better with it over the stock ECU I had.

i have not had any sort of stereo in the car since its been on the road and have been looking into replacing my trusty knockoff beats pill with something i don't have to take out and charge every other day.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/09/28313893315_0e8afdb50b_c-1.jpg

Every stereo headunit (aside from the panasonic "ghost" which i had in my old 240sx) are extremely tacky looking and I would like to retain my climate control, din gauges and cupholders.

I had planned on piecing together a "headunitless" bluetooth system which would just stream from my old Iphone. After doing a bit of searching I found a 1200W bluetooth amp for boats for less than $50.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/09/29712945946_337a88befc_c-1.jpg

I am a bit skeptical because the reviews for it were not the greatest. The bluetooth controller is HIDEOUS but it can easily be stuffed away somewhere. I've tested it with the two rear speakers and so far as I can tell it performs better than my knockoff beats pill so that's a win for me.

Sometime this week I will do a proper install with all 4 speakers. I just need to figure out what wires go to the front speakers and wire them up.

Also yesterday I went to my first Cars and Coffee event. I normally stay away from car meets as they tend to attract an immature crowd. Usually all the "adult" car meets around my house are just (with all due respect) for 70's american cars so I was excited to see different things. I ended up going with my friend and his dad who brought along their Shelby 350 replica and Chevy II Nova.

so its that time of year again when one runs out of light to do anything at 730. I installed the Pyle bluetooth amp over a couple of nights. I had to take everything apart and run new speaker wire for the rears and do a continuity test on the front speakers to see where everything went.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/10/29256190783_f3b5a8cc45_c-1.jpg

I wired everything up, mounted the amp under the rear parcel shelf, solder & heatshrink'd all the connections turned it on and the amp would only play one channel. (think of if your headphone jack is pulled out halfway). Ripped it all out and returned it for a full refund. I should have listened to the reviews.

Plan B was to wire up a kenwood deck I had planned on using before my period correct OCD took over.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/10/29785596756_14b8de1ba5_c-1.jpg

Not super stoked on ruining the look or losing my cupholders but driving around without music was getting dull.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/10/30124822776_29ef3c44c4_c-1.jpg

At least it matches. and has a bonus bluetooth function. I've ordered one of those really small 32gb usb keys to dump all my music on and prevent me from having to run my ipod cable to the centre console.

Finally managed to go up north of the city with a couple friends and enjoy the bumpy twisty roads. The first leg of the drive was really technical but the roads were so bad that we couldnt take advantage of them. We thought of turning around but then were blessed with 7-10kms of twisty new pavement.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/11/29890144763_09e6da3d5d_c-1.jpg

The second leg had many smooth long sweeping corners which were just as fun as the tight technical roads.

On the way home my heater core decided to empty itself into the passenger foot well.

All tucked away with a couple slabs and a sea of Corvettes.

This is where the thread takes its annual transitions from car posts to parts posts. This year I had focused on driving the car and working out small kinks since I put it back together.

Last weekend Santi took me lapping in his Silvia. We tried our best to keep up with an older 911. He got away but it was fun to try and keep pace :2f2f:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/11/30015729664_cc1e26abd8_c-1.jpg

Now im keen to give it a go. Our local drifting scene in ontario is abysmal (youtube shannonville drift to get the gist of it) There are closer tracks to me which do not condone drifting but offer evening lapping events weekly and are reasonably priced.

Winter plans are not that extensive.

- New Coilovers (my fronts have self lowered since driving this year)
- JDM Trinket Bucket Seat
- Rails (Been eyeballing street faction rails but who knows)
- Change the rear tires from 255/35 to 225/40 (Same tires just different sizes)
- Maintenance stuff (Speedo Cable and other oddities)
- I still want to swap out the wing for something else. but YJP prices have skyrocketed lately :-/

Till next time.

The Skyline is still locked away for the winter. Not much of a build but I've recently got better pictures from our friend on our fall drive outing. Whilst we were all playing with cell phone cameras he managed to get some real shots.

Happy New Year to everyone, I hope you all had a great holiday season.

Lets kick 2017 off with some 90s Confetti! There was really no other option for a super period build.

I managed to pick this up at a local importers for about what they were going for on YJP. Saved a bunch by not having to pay for shipping or duties which sealed the deal for me.

They only had the one seat which leaves the option open for a fixed bucket for a drivers. Alternatively I could just get a matching seat as they are not that uncommon.

My wife got me a GoPro Session for Christmas to use at the track next year too. Im pretty happy with the quality of pictures and phone integration. With it came the $20 dog mount for good laughs.

Over the past couple of years some friends and I have started hosting some skidpad days which have started a good following. The events were invite only and intended to give like minded people a place to drift without having to worry about a $300 BMW sliding into your door.

Drifitng is extremely hard on the car and after putting so much time and effort into it I didnt want to risk it anymore. Last year I got bitten by the lapping bug pretty badly.

I think everyone should try it at least once, as there's so much to learn and it easily shows you the strong / weak points in your build.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/07/42251631175_46142475a7_c-1.jpg

For my first time out I think I did 4 or so 10 min sessions in my car. I went with a friend who agreed to show me the ropes. I hopped in his car (600whp GTST) for the first while to learn the course. Then switched back to my car, which felt painfully slow) for the next few sessions to follow his line and have his record me driving.

I had a blast. It was a really hot day but the car stayed cool. New bumper helped out with this. As you can see I also took off the rear wing.

Next up was patching up the holes in the build which were made apparent on the track. First up was brakes. For the money, you cant beat the powerstop trackday pads (available on rock auto)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/07/30182251378_34ddfb3022_c-1.jpg

Went back out and realized the car needed more power.

The R33 Turbine swap was fairly standard bolt-on procedure which went fairly smoothly. If youre doing this swap be sure it comes with all the standard RB25 drains as well as the rb25 inlet and it is a 100% bolt on affair. Also swapped over the rb20 wastegate actuator for 10psi goodness. No retune required, This turbo is just a little bigger so it doenst fall off at high RPMS

At this time I should mention that through all this we did a massive reno on our little house. (so you dont wonder where the garage came from)

Anyways, Back to the car. Bigger rotors and and Oil cooler were next on the list.

got some 350z "track package" rotors which can be picked up locally and are less that $80 for the pair. Similarly sized skyline rotors are $400+

Car ran rock solid all day. 20 min lapping sessions and the car never saw 85* on either oil or coolant temp. The NS2Rs worked amazing and the minor brake upgrade completely transformed the car.

Back from the dead again. My other forum (zilvia) has recently been shut down. so Ill try and get this back up to date.

Its been quite the year for everyone. We have decided take advantage of the extremely hot housing market here in Toronto, cash out and move outside the city. The plan is to move south of Ottawa where our money can go a little further in terms of space and number or garage(s)

we listed our house in the beginning of September 2020 and it sold for over asking in under a week which was crazy. The house showed amazingly well and I am super happy to have nice professional photos to remember the house by.

Closing date is the end of November 2020 . We have rented until we get our new place March 2021

Below are some of the images from the listing.

Things admittedly went downhill in the looks department. My Tommykaira wheels I paid $400 for were now worth 2K so I sold them, My friend hit a raccoon and needed his bumper back. I tried to fit too large of a wheel / tire in the back and my soft (read rusty) rear quarters didn't take nicely to the fender roller. Banana wing didn't help either. Consider this the awkward teenage years but for cars. I've always liked the look of Street / Track GTR's from over seas. They mostly sport OEM bumpers and side skirts but have canards and winglets for that added bit of aggressiveness.

Mechanically the car is gone through a minor transformation. Mainly adapting GTR individual throttles to the RB20det. I have also added larger GTR injectors, a highflowed turbo and some other odds and ends here and there.

Your old place was super cool, but it is hard to argue about all the extra shop space in the new place. Glad to see some updates on this.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I am really enjoying the space along with the slower paced "country" life.

While the car has been at the body shop. I have been redesigning the ITB adapter system. The kit I bought stacked plates on top of each other to adapt the bolt pattern of the ITB intake manifold. This just added more opportunities for failure points and I could never get the system to seal properly. So I ordered a used lower manifold and got to cutting.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2022/01/51801562484_943802985a_c-1.jpg

The difference between the ITB spacing and runner spacing is 2-3 mm but there should be enough meat to port them and have a smooth transition. Using actual CAD I designed up some .5" thick flanges to have Machined. started with .75" scrap we had kicking around and profiled out the shape.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2022/01/51828701038_734e29ce22_c-1.jpg

I transferred over the studs from the oem GTR manifold for a test fit. There is a slight interference caused by the distance between the top and bottom studs being off by .75mm.

Not a huge deal as the split pins which locate the throttle bodies are on the bottom holes and they fit perfect. Ill just oversize the top holes and it will fit perfectly.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2022/01/51827642427_91ddb8a476_c-1.jpg

You can see the difference in the ITB spacing vs the OEM RB20DET runner spacing here. The plan is to fill it with weld on the inside and weld on the outside as well. I can then smooth out the transition.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2022/01/51827644872_e49718f14f_c-1.jpg

Mocked it all up for welding. Ill have one of my co workers knock that out sometime this week :)

The RB26DETT (GTR) engine came factory with ITBs. I am adapting those to the RB20DET engine in my GTS-T
