View Full Version : Which one of the "9" would you build?

I am just curious of the 9 cars featured in PHR this month which car would you think would be the most fun and why? I think my choice would be between the cougar and the 3rd gen camaro.

Cougar with fat 18" wheels and big brakes with a late model 5.0 and 5 spd would be a cool driver.

The Camaro '92 body with RS body kit, LS1 T56, and Budnik wheels would be pretty tough to pass up.

No you would'nt. :-P

Well seeing as i already have a 82 z with, LCA's/panhard/tds wonderbar/c5 wheels(brakes in the works)..many other lil suspension tweaks. That would be my first pick...then probably the riviera

Yeah the Riviera was sweet. Great Boulevard cruiser with airbag suspension and a supercharged Cadillac Northstar?

Being a Nova guy myself I would have to build the Ventura.

That Ventura is identical to the Nova in a recent mag...body, color and wheels.

Glad you picked up on that! Johnny and Steve sent me the picture of that blue Nova and said "something like this..."

I'm glad to see there's some buzz about this article and people are actually considering some of them. Good luck with the Torino Luke!

Emotionally the Riv. Most likely the Cougar. Love the front end.

Nice work, Kris.

Hmmm - maybe a wagon. Oops, not one of the 9!

I'd build the Ventura, but skip the big drag radials, and go all pro-touring. I'd buy the '08 GNX.

(1) Laguna
(2) Cougar
(3) Ventura

Nice Work,Kris!

cougar, but i'd want to do a 70, i'm kind of partial to the 70 since i used to own one. wish i still had it.

Funny story, I actually did a 70 Cougar. Finished it all up and brought it to a meeting at PHR. Johnny says "I wanted a 68, I don't like 70's!" Doh! But in the end, he was right, I like the 68 better too, though the 69/70 is still pretty cool.

So if you ever build a 70 Cougar, call me up, I've got just what you need!

I had a '69 Cougar XR-7. Loved that car, IMO a better looking (less Mustangish) than the 67/68.

If I could build any of them I think I'd do a Cougar (a '69 though) with gobs of Global West stuff underneath it (Mustang stuff bolts right up to Cougars) or the Torino with a 427SCJ.

Sorry Kris, none of the GM's really thrilled me......except for the Buick. ZOWIE!

i have really been considering selling the mustang when i get it done and using the money to A: put a down payment on a house and B: buying another 70 to build as a PT car. thinking of some kind of variation of the 69 eliminator side stripes and 70 hood stripes. of course it will have front and rear spoilers. i've been trying to figure out how i could do ducktail style rear spoiler rather than the standard wing though. i alreadu have a few parts for it as well, i have a 69 instrument cluster with all the guages, tach, speedo, oil pressure, volts, temp and fuel. and the clock for the passenger side. i have a really nice xr7 grille and a roof console from a 68 stang that i was planning on using in the stang but if i do end up selling it i'll keep the roof console. i have a rear window defogger, the dash switch panel for the courtesy lights and stuff i have a 70 floor console and a 73 leather wrapped sport steering wheel with the xr7 logo on the horn button, plus i know there is a ton of stuff i'm forgetting.

Their arent any upper a-arm's on a third gen, the top of the spring sets in a pocket in the k-member. ...they do make a few of those though ;)

I know of all the cars on the list, the one that hit my soft spot was the '72 Torino. I did the photochop below back in March and liked it so much that I put it in on my desktop to look at everyday. I've even found myself spotting '72-'73 Torinos and seriously considering inquiring about them. I've even had the opportunity to buy a couple, but turned 'em down because of the amount of work they'd require. One day though... Anyway, I think I'll add Kris's rendering to my desktop to keep me lusting even more.

Here's my photochop I mentioned:

We just shot a red '71 Torino GT with the hideaway lights last Friday.. It will be in the Jan Issue.. Oh, it has hideaway headlights :woot:

BTW.. It is the red Torino on the Cover of Tony's new Ford Restomod book..

vanzuuk1
08-21-2005, 04:43 PM
but its not a fastback!
I saw the car on the link above, real cool car. It has some similar panels to the ford falcon in mad max.
If I ever sell my 69 , my next project will be a break from the norm, a nascar themed protouring torino or satellite. I would love to an f1 themed musclecar with carbon fiber everything but I will never have the budget.
The vintage look is more forgiving on the wallet so my car will scream penske camaro by the time its done.

primate
08-21-2005, 04:55 PM
a nascar themed torino would be insane, vanzuuk1.
i am trying to find info on how to do carbon fiber stuff myself. i see sheets on ebay all the time, and i am thinking about buying some for some simple panels for the maro.
torinos always looked like the tires were too small for the body, the pro touring/nascar2k6 look would be way different and wild.

I agree, a big car like the torino would need big rubber to look right.Even a 76 monte would look great with the vintage nascar stuff.Another cool look for some of the big cars would be a comfy cruiser.Take a car like the monte and stuff it with a modern drivetrain, leather interior and power everything.Try and make an american classic feel like a mercedes or a newer caddy, it would be cool but $$$.

My choice would be the Laguna. I drove a '74 Malibu 2 door with a 400 SBC for a while in high school, but got rid of it when I started to get into Camaros. Don't see too many on the road anymore.

I'd do a Cougar.

The third gens need to be left alone for some time still. They are still at that point where the really nice examples are in garages, the drivers are beaters and the rest are in the junk yard. They are by no means a dime a dozen on the streets, but I think they need to go away for a little hiatus so they can better be appreciated a little later on after the white-trash-ish factor anjd stigma wears off. They are great performance platforms, but have just been around and in the light a little long. Don't get me wrong- I've had 8 of them in all trim packages, styles and makes, and I still love 'em.

The Third Gen Camaro! I'm actually working on one. To my eye, it's the nicest looking Camaro of them all. Mine's an '89 Iroc. It'll have a Pro-Touring stance, suspension, wheel, tire and brake upgrades. I'm not going to do much with the body beyond a repaint and new graphics. It looks great as-is and I don't feel like gilding the lily.I might want to something with those cheesy-a** phony hood louvers, though...

I've always liked good old fashioned aluminum slotted wheels, so I just upsized 'em on that pic to 18"-19" territory, and made sure the rubber filled the wells. I always think these big cars need big rubber with plenty of sidewall to look right... you know, maybe something like a 285/60/18 g-force T/A KDW. It really gets that pro-touring meets pro-street look while still maintaining real world function (i.e. no huge steam rollers or deep tubs).

Oh, and sorry about the keyboard... but I hear they've got pills to help with that kinda thing now... :poke:
