I got pulled over by a fine young texas state trooper this morning on my way into work. He said I was speeding. Some how I knew I would be getting off light when the next words out of his mouth was "I got a 66 chevelle the real deal I'm restoring". 4 speed....etc etc it was my uncles car he said been stored sense the 80's.
I told him thank you after he handed me a nice warning ticket. I wasn't really going much over pretty much just following the traffic. Guess he just needed a closer look.

It is a PITA when they do that, but it goes to show, that they're not all ticket writers...

Typical. Wastes your time to indulge his curiosity. Not to mention the wear and tear on your heart as your blood pressure goes up when those lights go on.

I'm about 1 hour & 45 minutes north of you off I-35 between Waco and DFW. I guess you could say I live in the sticks.

I had a similar incident a couple weeks ago. 73 in a 55... Sheriff walks up and says " Man, I love this car..." in the back of my mind I was going "phew... not getting a ticket today..." LOL

a long time ago, when i was in high school, and driving my Studebaker i pulled out of the local gas station on to Highway 30, passed two 18wheelers in less than 2 blocks, I was about 1/2mi out of town when I looked in the review mirror, and the city cop (Gorge) was chasing me with every thing that '80's? Cavalier had. So I pulled over and waited for him to get there. Gorge was so pissed off that he could hardly talk!!
I did get a ticket.
but when I got home later that night, my Dad told me that Gorge was not going to fill the ticket.
I guess dad and Gorge had a good laugh, Gorge had been pissed that the city made him get rid of his 73 Plymouth with a 440, so I just added insult to injury.
I miss Gorge he got me out of a few tickets!
dad and I did get the Plymouth from the city, we put the motor in our Ramcharger.

We are normal people with normal passions too, most of us when we write tickets they are deserved. Tickets can be reminders that if you drive safe we are all safe. I have never stopped someone so I can look at their ride. I have loosely followed so I can have a look if it gets parked within a reasonable distance and the owner does not mind. Made a lot of good car buddies over the years just by talking.

I'll second "sanman" we are normal people with normal passions. I've met a bunch of car guys through my job and some are always surprised when I start asking technical questions. I'm glad it worked out in your favor, a written warning will also change behavior and it lets the motoring public know we're not robots and can show compassion.

That's cool! No ticket from a fellow hot rodder. I have a couple of friends on the force and they are regular car guys. As long as you have a good attitude and weren't being too crazy...

I just had to add to this. A few years ago I was going from Jonesboro to Little Rock (Arkansas). I was going down a two lane road, I was in a hurry, and was doing 72 in a 55. blue lights, State trooper. I pulled over, and watched as a female trooper got out and was coming up to the truck. I had my family with me, and I was going to try to add humor to the situation so after she got to the door, I said, "were going to have to quit meeting like this". Something she didn't find as funny as I did. My two kids melted into the floor board and my wife told me to shut up! The trooper then asked me to step out of the vehicle and go to the back of the truck. I did, she wrote down my license number and started saying how much she liked my truck. It was a '03 2500 hd Chevrolet 4x4, orange with black brush guard etc. It was really a cool looking truck. Any way, after she wrote me the ticket and told me to have a nice night I proceeded to my destination. About a week later I went to pay the ticket ( i had already called to see how much a 72 in a 55 would cost (about $180!), so I go to the window and show my ticket and the lady says "ok, that will be $64.50. What?...... She had reduced the ticket without telling me. Just goes to show there are some good people in the world. And it doesn't hurt to be light hearted about the situation...

^^ Good story...
I was out on new years eve at about 11 with my friend in my highly modded supra and it was his first time in my car... so after my radar detector stopped going off. I got into it a little bit. I got to about 60 on down the street and just made the light... to my surprise I see an umarked dodge challenger police car on the other side of the street.
I immediately let off the gas causing the blow off valve to.. well blow off and started pulling over... I knew I was in for it. The charger flashed its lights at me and I stopped. The lady walked up to me and asked if I had been drinking and for my license after checking it, she asked me how fast i was going, I told her i had no idea! She then asked me where i was going, and why so fast, I pointed to my back seat and calmly said diaper run :P . I had about 10 diapers in the back seat. She let off a little giggle and said well be safe and I was on my way!
After I finished delivering diapers I put that puppy in the garage for the night... since it attracts a little too much attention !

The better my car gets, the better it feels at 80+; in many ways, this kinda sucks... Cops have been very nice to me over the years, however...

That was very nice of her, but always keep it to yourselves. Some agencies frown upon giving breaks. Friend of mine did same thing, got the guy at a high speed and knocked it down to a warning because the guy was cool about it and no cars in area that were endangered, at the time. The guy called to let the boss know how professional the officer was and admitted to his actual speed. The officer took a couple day suspension and the guy was issued the correct citation by another supervisor. Everyone lost. How many times do you think the decent cop will take the suspension before NO ONE gets a break.

who the hell would call up a station to thank the police for receiving a lucky break?
Every time its happened to me the routine is the same: Thank the officer profusely during the stop, then drive slowly for the next few weeks..

I normally get the exact opposite at least in Indiana. Get the ticket and the attitude from the Police here, then scolded and threatened with a ticket for the noise from a stock exhausted Mustang GT.
I had recently got my 64 Fairlane on the road after way to long of a time building it, very nice Restomod build. Get pulled over by a County cop, says you were speeding. I say I was going X amount, he says No you were going Y amount. I say sorry, I just got the car on the road, the speedo must be off. Here is your ticket. Not even a nice car comment. LOL, Chevy or Mopar guy maybe?
Good and Bad ones just like with any other job.
And who the hell would call and thank for a lesser ticket? Too funny

Ill keep this as short as I can.
About 8 or 9 years ago i had taken my Nova {high 11 second small block 5 speed car} to an evening league softball game. On the way out on of my buddies dads starts razzing me about running my Nova with his Explorer, obviously just wanting to see what it had. I wasnt going to give in so i kindly declined. On the way home I pull up next to him underneath an interstate overpass at a stop light. The speed limit on the road is 35 and its a curve left. He yells out the window "so whats that big cowl hood for son?? Why does it make all that noise, hell I bet my Explorer could give you a run for your money" obviously just trying to get me to do something stupid with it. It was around 10:30 PM, no one in sight, no other cars anywhere around. I was around 21 or so at the time and stupid so forgive my in town dumbassness....I let him roll out about 20 foot, walked the car up to around 3500 RPM and mashed it in 1st gear up to 7500 RPM tires blazing, 2nd gear, same deal except this time im kind of sliding around the left hand bend and just unleashing hell, I hit 7500 RPM and im well around him at this point, shift to 3rd and I said F'it and kept in it a bit and let off....about the time I let off I see cherries flashing. Im thinking im done, gonna lose the licence, im going to jail....dammit. The State trooper comes up to the window, dosent ask for licence and registration like I thought he was going to right away. In a moment to end all moments of complete unprofessional conduct, he starts chewing my ass like im 9...."Jesus Christ son you realize the drag strip is 10 miles that way RIGHT??? {CF raceway} I cannot believe you were doing something that stupid with a car like this...the guy goes on and on chewing my ass up one side and down the other. Then he asks for licence and registration. He takes them, tells me to get out and put the sticker on my licence plates because the one was expired. He sits in his car for what seemed like forever and he comes back. Im expecting him to throw a book of tickets at me that total more than a new TKO and have my car towed.... he hands me a $48 dollar ticket for what amountd to squealing my tires at a stoplight and told me to never do that kind of stuff in town again, explained that he could have ran me through the ringer and to have a nice night.

For the OP: That's cool, I'll chalk up a warning ticket as a win anytime.
Cops can be cool if you treat them with respect, if they turn out being car guys, even better.
I have been very lucky probably too many times, but a good attitude goes a long way.
A 'win' for you my lucky friend.

Nep you know if that was the case I would have told it that way....... it would have made for a much better story. But if you must know the truth I was toying along at about 85 just seconds prior to being pulled over but a slow moving truck slowed me down to traffic speed just before we came into view of the nice young trooper hidding behind the overpass. I guess I should really be thanking the truck driver...
