View Full Version : Narrowed 9" Currie rearend now brake caliper hits springs

Wasn't sure where to place this, so here goes. I have a 68 Camaro with a ford 9" bolt in from currie with the ford explorer 11" discs and I have a problem now.....

I had the rearend narrowed 2.5" per side as I would like to run a deeper dish wheel since it will be minitubbed next... But now the caliper where it bolts in hits the rear leafs... Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thx,
Brad

Un narrow the rear end.

Buy different brakes, the current SVO brakes use the ebrake on the caliper, not the internal drum parking brake that was awesome. Wilwoods may offer better spring clearance.

Run a 4 link.

Here is the cheapest way. Find a way to reclock the mounting brackets so the it creates the clearance you need.

That's all I can think of right now. I would probably go the wilwood route.

Maybe try DSE's offset shackles for mini tubbed cars?

Offset shackles and relocated spring mounts. You can probably find them used as alot of people are switching to 4-lins and others.

Re-drill the mounting holes on the caliper brackets to rotate them on the housing ends. This is the reason Baer Brakes makes multi-pattern caliper brackets. This should not need to be stated...but...If you rotate the calipers, make sure the bleeder is still the highest point of the caliper so you can get a good bleed. Good luck :)

Agreed. Since you are mini tubing the vehicle in order to get a larger tire, your options are relocate the springs inside the frame or go with a link setup. The links alone in the original spring position will give you 1.5-2" of tire/wheel space, but will add more costs. To keep it simple and save $$, you could possibly just relocate the front leaf spring mount to inside the frame by switching the mount (original driver side mount will now be the passenger mount and vice-versa). Then figure an offset shackle.
Tony's idea is fine but will not help with the larger tire issue, hitting the spring.

Now what are some ideas on wheels to do transport from my house to where its getting minitubbed at? I tried to put my Budniks on and they rub the inner fender well now as I thought they prob would. Any ideas or thoughts on some relatively cheap temp transportation wheels??

add some washers or nuts on the studs to shim the wheel away from the fender. Sorta acting as a spacer

If you're just going to trailer it , you're just looking for roller tires, try a junk yard. Maybe even the 'donut' type spare tire/wheel. Just recently did the same thing and got tires/wheels for $8 a piece. put them curbside for the junk collectors when I was done with them.

Good idea. Anybody know another vehicle that's spare might be a good fit or options if cars? Chevy car 5 lug I know but others??

Hey Brad, call a junk yard, they may know the different bolt patterns and may give you options.
