ok guys I'm not a tranny pro. I have a 92 4l80e for a ls1. i was told that i should use a 99 or newer because they are much stronger and also the 92 can not have a aftermarket contoller added to it. Is this true and does anyone have any suggestions or input

Physical strength wise both would survive behind an LS1. I hear the early 92-96 4L80E had problems with the internal harness, which is usually replaced with updated model on rebuild. The harness is different after '92, which is why they say you can't use the early trans with the standalone controller. I know PCS makes an adapter for early 4L80e to 93 up harness just not sure what controllers it will work with besides theirs. Seems like replacing the internal and external harness would resolve this issue though. Steve from Twist may chime in here....

Not sure how far you are with your trans install/reserch but I have some words of wisdom when it comes to the electronics.
I just replaced my TH400 with a 4l80e and outside of a few mods to the 66 Chevelle (shorting the driveshaft, relocating the cross member, stretching the fluid lines and, taking a hammer to the tunnel), the "physical" side of the install was pretty simple.
It's the "E" in the 4l80 that's the real challange if your not experienced with electronics like I am.
I purchased the EZ TCU from TSI, followed the install instructions to a "T", used the TPS (throttle positioning sensor) RPM relay (I'm running HEI ignition) and plugged in the handheld. That's where the fun starts!
First of all let me say, I'm not done dealing with TCI so I will reserve judgement on the whole experience.
I'll just stick to the facts because of my limited knowledge when it comes to electronics.
This system is "plug and play" only if you follow a few things.
1) If the car has been sitting for a few weeks, like mine did during the install, you need to make sure the battery is charged. 12.2v minimum or you get error messages and can't go through the system setup.
2)Proper ground is needed.
3) "noise" is also a factor. Not sure why TCI doesn't use shielded wires but I spent hours trying to minimize electrical interference to even get the handheld to work.
4) The TPS needs proper adjustment (ohm readings) at closed throttle.
Most of these issues were resolved over the phone with the tech guys but it would have been much easier if they were explained in the instructions.
5) and this is totally up to anyone running a electronic trans in an old muscle car,or any car with a mechanical speedo cable. The 450.00 speedo accessory is an option and not required for the system to operate. Spend 795.00 and get the VHX dash from Dakota Digital and the EZ kit plugs in. A GPS app on you phone is always an option.
Having said all that, if anyone else has any experience installing this system, I would be interested to learn how the system works in the long run.
