Sacrilege! BMW power in a classic Ford? Yes. Why? Because the primary focus of this car is function, not form or pleasing anyone or any idea.
A little background: I built this car 12 years ago as a mild resto-mod, something to learn on, drive around on the street, and take to an autocross or track day every once in a while. It was never really built with any particular focus in mind, just "make it pretty good." It's a 1966 Coupe, with the following equipment as built the first time around:
Driveline:
Original 289 (freshened), a Ford Racing T-5, hydraulic clutch, 8" traction-loc 3.55 rear end. Later, my brother ran the car out of oil and killed the 289. So I built a 331 from a new 302 short block. Nothing fancy, ~350whp.
Suspension:
new springs and stock replacement suspension components (shelby drop included), manual steering box, "negative wedge" kit for upper ball joint (to improve range of motion with Shelby drop), new higher-rate springs F&R, non-adjustable shocks to match. No rear lateral locating device!
Chassis:
subframe connectors, bolt-in 4-pt roll bar
Interior:
High-backed Recaro seats and 3-pt seatbelts.
Brakes:
Grenada front disk brake swap (rotors / hubs, calipers, spindles, tie rod ends), '67 dual master cylinder and power booster, stock rear drums
Fast forward to the present day. Some rust has started to come back through the body, thanks to the fact that I now live and work at the beach! Then the classic project problem happened: as I stripped the car to repair the corrosion damage, I realized more and more work needed to be done. And the fun begins...
(stay tuned, more to come, with (of course) pictures!!)
