View Full Version : Disc Brake conversions that fit under 15" wheels?

So I have been going back and forth debating on whether or not to stick with my 15" rallyII wheels on my 68 Bird, or to get the 17" Intro wheels that I like.

I have been kicking around the idea of doing a C4 front disc conversion, and a LT1 Fbody rear disc conversion.

I have read that "supposedly" they will clear some 15" wheels.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

I ran that setup when I first built my car, it did fit inside 15" rally rims. The fronts were real tight, I had to sand a few fins off the calipers and add a 3/16 spacer for clearance but it worked well and was budget friendly too. Dan

thanks I appreciate the input.

on the performance years forum another member said he had run 15x7 wheels on the back of a LT1 firebird with discs and they cleared with some minor caliper fin clearancing.

So it looks like I will go with the C4 fronts/LT1fbody rears

I read on pozzi racing that the caliper piston size on both those c4 and lt1 calipers is exactly the same, so brake proportioning wont be that much of a hassle.

NICE!

budget friendly is the name of the game, keep my wheels that I have already restored, get cheap corvette brakes!

Give SSBC a call, we have installed a few disc brake conversions from them.

Also, the c4 piston are is on the small side, I had the best luck using the c4 master cyl which is 15/16 bore. Just open up the mounting holes and adjust the power brake output pin length and it fits fine. You will need metric thread adapters for the hard line too.

I have seen their kits in various catalogs, thats what I was initially wanting to go with or a Wilwood set up, but I like the idea of piecing a good kit together for a fraction of the cost

I have the front Baer SS4 Plus kit, and it works great. 11" Drilled & Slotted Rotor (2 piece), 4 Piston caliper.

Where are you planning in sourcing the parts for this swap? Might be interested in doing something similar myself.

the bracket templates for the front can be found on pozzi racing's website, but I was looking for someone who previously had this set up and was willing to sell their brackets.

as for the calipers, I was going to go online and buy them somewhere, the pads/rotors I was going to buy Powerstop slotted rotors that are plated, those things never rust and are pretty cheap

I have been having problems getting the rear brake caliper mounting plate from a 4th gen F-body.

I have found 3rd gen F-body plates, but dont know if they are compatible

I put S10 Blazer rear disc on mine and it clears 15" wheels easy. Rotors are 11.6" IIRC and the have the internal drum parking brake. That was what really sold me on them.

interesting, I have heard the LS F-body also have the internal drum, but they are bigger and wont fit under 15s
