View Full Version : Pro Touring rat rod/muscle cars with patina

Just checking to see how many of them are out there. I will be going this route on my budget nova project. The car has some rust and original paint so I will just be doing suspension, brakes, wheels and mini tubs but will not be touching the body at all.
Any pic of muscle cars with the rat rod/patina theme?

Iv'e got a 70' Chevelle Malibu and iv'e given good thought to doing this same thing in a couple of years when I start on it. The only thing not original to the car is one crappy repaint about 20 years ago. How cool would it be to have a car like this with 18" steel wheels/poverty caps and all the PT good stuff?

This was running at Lonestar Goodguys. Its not finished yet with no side glass or interior, but he plans to keep it as raw as possible with the fake patina. It had some pretty sweet looking Raw Monoblock wheels on it as well.
This pic is from Bangshift coverage of the event.

After getting a quote for paint, I like the idea. This build I am into right now will be a finished build, but the next one hopefully will either be a C10 or a Pontiac Ventura and I will likely go with the unpolished look for that.

how could I forget! Debs wagon was the reason I got my wagon. I just hope someday it will be on the front line of the projects.
A pic of the BUDGET ($850) Nova , I will be getting my V-40 wheels, ride tech tru turn and DSE mini tubs this week. :smoke: I will be starting this car within the next couple weeks.

Maybe calling these survivors is a better term. Matt's 68 and Bad94's Nova are both awesome cars. When I think of rat rods, I think of something that is pretty crusty. These cars just have a little character.

To be honest I would like to do the body work and paint on my Camaro but With out cashing my 401k or selling a kidney (which I considered) I could not afford it. The patina look is really growing on me and being able to set my beer on the car while working on it is a plus.

Well since were all posting up pics....136K miles on the 350 and 1 crap paintjob 20 years ago. If I get to it, it might just get a few holes in the floor welded up, all options stay including the bench seat and column shift, and the sky is the limit on the rest of it.

In '92 I built this 4 door Nova. Built 406 small block, TH350 w/4500 stall, 4.56s in the 12 bolt, fiberglass front bumper, hood, fenders, and trunk lid, and high 11s as my daily driver. With faded paint, scratches, dings and dents, and some rust here and there it was very ugly and a killer sleeper that fulfilled it's purpose well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/4drlaunch1-1.jpg
BUT each time I took it to a cruise night I wished I had the coin to make it look as good as the other cars as mine faded into the background. Back then patina wasn't popular and the car may be more appreciated today, but I still struggle because although I've had several cars that performed well over the years (including my current p-t wagon) body work and paint has out of necessity and empty pockets always taken a back seat. I have no concept of what it means to own a pretty car and only wish to have one one day.
I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm starting to get sick of folks trying to imitate patina or calling an undone car cool because it looks undone. Although many are cool, some of the cars end up looking like a piece of garbage with expensive wheels on it. That's what I saw in that 510 Datsun above. I like some of them, like that last "rat rod" pick up I think is cool because it has a lot of character. But for a car that just needs some mild body work and paint to be finished, yet it is shown as something cool because it looks not so nice, to me it just looks like a car that isn't finished yet and makes me wonder why it isn't and when it will be. Not trying to be the devil's advocate, just voicing my point of view having had to be in this position with all my cars.

Maybe tomorrow I can get a picture of the Falcon here. Mine is neither fully rat, nor pro-touring, whatever that is; it's got a computer, but it's for the steering; otherwise, it's got carb and points, which were both completely on purpose. It does do some things well, however, and has some of the worst paint I've ever seen (I did not do it)...

Glad to see some people like my truck, thanks for the compliments guys. I have always been a fan of muscle cars with patina. I like seeing an unrestored car with it's character and back story out in the open cruising around town. Patina cars are even cooler if they are sleepers. Originally I kept the patina on my truck to save time because my truck was a crazy idea that quickly became an eight month father/son thrash to bring the truck to life with a limited number of weeknights and weekends to work. Then I realized it would be a shame to cover up 60+ years of mother nature's finest work, and it would take a lot of work to make a flat black paint job look decent. And all of that work wouldn't make it any faster either!
I have always been inspired by this Nova

You guys will be glad to know that the nova pictured above is still alive and well. It looks exactly as pictured and the seats are all torn up still.......and it is stupid fast.
I also love Tyler's truck. I will always have a soft spot the AD trucks, my first hot rod was a 48 chevy PU that came out of Kansas that had no less than 5 paint jobs on it......and they all showed through. Mustang frontend and truck arms in the back, 350, 5 speed. Did btichin donuts in the gravel. Drove it every day, it was my only vehicle.

1967 Cougar with manual transmission = very cool! My brother had a '67 many years ago, and it was unfortunately sandwiched between a van and a guardrail on the freeway. Running gear still worked though, so into a crappy '68 Mustang it went ($250.00 off of someone's lawn)...

I love the idea of this type of build but I would call it more of a street fighter and not a rat rod. The green 1160hp 72 nova is no doubt the definition of a street fighter car.
I'm thinking about dropping my trans am mustang look for more of a street fighter build.

The funny thing is that even with the "street fighter" look (as opposed to either super-pretty or rat rod), people still expect the least from your car. This makes it more fun...
Nice paint really is the surest sign of massive speed and performance...

This repair was uncovered at the sandblasters. I was unaware of it when I bought the car. Im leaving it, I think it goes with the vibe of the car. I once saw a beautiful shiny street rod at a show with several bullet holes in the trunk lid. I talked to the guy he said he originally pulled the car out of a field and told the body guy to leave the holes there. I thought it was cool. That guy/car influenced my decision to leave it.

My car's appearance was recently looking a bit rough so I washed and buffed my spray paint over dented body panels finish with some cheap cleaner/wax. It brought back the bright semi-gloss sheen of the Rustoleum rather than the more satin look it had faded a bit to. Although it brought out all the imperfections in the sheet metal I was feeling a bit giddy about the "gloss" sheen again. Didn't last long though, over night the sprinklers got it and left hard water stains all over. Then the next day one of the rare occasions here in St George, UT, it rained slightly and left red dirt dust spots all over the car. Oh well back to looking dirty and weathered again, lol!

I'm considering doing a faux-tina paint on my nova. I just can't wrap myself around paying for "show finish" paint, plus my car has too many body "issues" that need to be addressed (small dings, wavy panels, no real rust issues).
have you guys ever seen that episode of Trucks?

Hey Craig,
Since you're here, I remember seeing something in your TFFN thread about hammering out the trans/driveshaft tunnel for driveshaft clearance at the rear. I seem to have reached that point with my latest round of *******ization (includes new biscuit bar for awesome forward bite!). Have you found that you need more clearance yet, or are you good at your current ride height?
I'll be cutting and re-locating about 12-15 inches of mine soon...

Have you found that you need more clearance yet, or are you good at your current ride height?
I'll be cutting and re-locating about 12-15 inches of mine soon...
Warning Thread Hijack alert!
I hammered the tunnel out and it still hit pretty bad. I cut and sectioned the rear 1/3 of the tunnel and now it clears nice near the diff, but still hits further forward, about where the rear seat raiser fits. It is only rubbing on the side, and hits most often going over speed bumps, but it still hits. Next time I have the interior out, I will be fitting a new tunnel with plenty of clearance. I think most of my issues are because I moved and raised the bump stops, and the offset of the narrowed 8.8" Explorer rear end favors the right side of the car about 7/8" more than the stock diff. After my next couple of front suspension mods I will be looking to tear the car apart for a cage and a torque arm, but that will have to wait for next winter.
