View Full Version : Which corvette 13" setup fits on a first gen with torque thrust on it?
I'm going ot be piecing together a front brake kit for a guy, he has a 68 firebird with the polished torque thrusts on it, 17x7's. I have heard about fitment issues with those wheels, will the 13" C5 fit? or the C4? I would like to not have to grind them

A 13" C4 rotor and C5 caliper will fit under 17x7 TTIIs, but you will have to grind the front of the caliper a bit for wheel clearance. I understand that you want to piece a kit together, but take a look at the Touring-Classics Hybrid kit for insight. TC sells the calipers/rotors separately as well.

Go for the c4 HD rotors. They're bigger than c5s and and have more offset so the caliper clears.

Does anybody have the diameter and width of the normal C4, HD C4 and C5 rotors? And also the height of the "hat" of those different rotors? (length/height between the outer brakepad contact surface, and the surface where the wheel is mounted)

The C5's hit with my TT's so a 5/16" spacer was the fix. I don't think ginding would be a good idea.

When measured from the mounting surface to the middle of the rotor braking surface the C4 13” hat height is 1.358” and for the C5 is 0.852”.
Like Vince said...don't grind on anything! Run a spacer or choose the appropriate wheels.

Great info, thank you!
That's a difference of about 1/2", and a similar reduction in the adapterplate thickness (atleast for 2.gens/B-body spindles). When starting out with 5/8, that's a bunch!
Not ment as a thread-jack, sorry! Just thinking out loud as maybe someone else needs the same info. A 1/2" more clearance for the wheels is a big plus though, just need to find a solution to new problems.
Again, thanks!

Christian,
Take a look at my webpage to show details on the tall spindle C5 conversion.

Also, Vince has a nice page on how to do the swap for 3rd gen. F-bodies.

Hi Joe,
I looked at your webpage (It's already booked in my favorites) - Nice!
My thought was going with HD C4 rotors and C5 calipers for rim clearance, but the adapterplate between the spindle and abutment might get too thin? (Hat difference 1/2", adapterplate normally 5/8" = 1/8"!) A solution would be using the B-body "hub", if pushing the rotor somewhat out will get the adapterplate to about 3/8" (Difference of b-body and 3.gen "hub" + 1/8") Just thinking, I must have some parts in my hands to measure, but it sure gets my head started!
I think the touring classics hybrid kit looks good, I am sure i could do it for cheaper, but that looks easy enough and about half the price of baers kit. Need a power master though

I don't have TT's on my car, but my VWW wheels are similar. I didn't grind on the calipers any, but I did have to run a 1/8" spacer, and the fins on the back of the caliper come VERY close to the inside of the wheel. When having the wheels/tires balanced, they'll have to avoid putting stick on weights where they'll hit the caliper as the wheel turns. the distance between the caliper fins and the wheel is less than the width of one of those stick on weights  . Not a problem though if your wheel is balanced correctly.

I also have 16" VWW V45's, C4 13" rotors and C4 calipers. With a 1/4" spacer it's tight but fits.
