Hey everyone! This is my 72 El Camino that my dad got as my first car last year for $2500. The car sat for almost 20 years by the time we got it and it didn't run. It had a tired original 350 and factory 4 speed. everything was original. Funny part is the only engine problem was the distributor was in the wrong firing order lol. The shifter was stuck and wouldn't move so we took it out and wire brushed it clean and it works great now. I drove it for a while with a clutch that slipped like crazy. Some of the valves had been knocking for a while and it finally gave up on the way to school. My plan is to upgrade it as I go. Still haven't found a name for the project. I'm open to suggestions! Also I'm only 17 and still new to the world of autocross and would really appreciate some guidance so I can really get into racing. Any advice as far as clubs for SCCA I can join and events going on I can compete in would be great. I really love autocross and road racing and would love to get more involved. I will post more pictures of what we've done but some will come slowly because we're not building it all at once.

Engine/Transmission:
350 rebuilt to stock but bored out a little bigger
Edelbrock 2101 Performer Intake Manifold we got from junkyard
650 cfm Edelbrock Carburetor
MSD Distributor
Edelbrock Fuel Pump
Headers we picked up from Goodguys show. Don't know what brand.
Powermasters Alternator

Suspension:
BMR 1" front lowering springs
KYB shocks (front only)
Everything else is stock suspension

Supposed to get DSE front speed kit 1 and rear speed kit 2 tomorrow so that will be going on.

Thanks! Im having tons of fun! The back is pretty light so we moved the spare tire right behind the driver compartment to get it a tad more balanced. I'm "supposed" to get DSE speed kits 1 in the front and 2 in the back. I was thinking of naming it project young gun. Young buck sounds a lot better lol. Do you know how to change the title of a thread?

Yeah I've seen this car on here a couple of times. It looks really cool!! What kind of suspension do you have? Also what kind/size wheels are they? They are boss 338 right.

Looking good!!!! Sounds about how my project started. Dad bought it for me and gave me a head start and POOF autocross came to mind. Lol! Im going to be running DSE suspension on my Trans Am also. Cant wait to c pics of it out on the track!

Danny72
03-19-2013, 09:53 AM
Yeah I have a bunch of pictures I'm going to post up today if I have time. Goodguys is this weekend so we are probably going to get the front all replaced but in the back we might only have time for springs, shocks, and maybe sway bar. I have to take it to school to get it aligned in my auto tech class.

trans am kid 17
03-19-2013, 09:54 AM
That sounds good. There arent many events around here for me to attend and my car is still in pieces lol i wish i had an auto tech class to work on my car

Danny72
03-19-2013, 10:10 AM
I know how it feels. There are a few events over here in the Bay Area but sometimes I get too confused with all the clubs and classes. That's part of why I made this thread so I can get involved more. Having the class with lifts and alignment rack really helps.

03-19-2013, 10:17 AM
Yea i need to get more involved in the classes and clubs also so i can get into some races. And i bet those classes help the best things i have here are my garage with all my tools and a body shop i used to work for helps with paint and patch panels and the rest i do myself lol

Danny72
03-19-2013, 10:59 AM
The class helps when I really need a lift but other times my dad and I do all the work in the driveway lol.

So today was pretty disappointing. I went to Matt's Classic Bowties and picked up the DSE suspension and I took it home and after I took of the rear shocks my dad started to open up the boxes and we couldn't find the rear control arms or the rear shocks. I hope they just forgot to give me the boxes and they're still there so I can pick then up tomorrow. We have everything else but that.

HELLCAMINO

Hey Danny, I am using UMI components for suspension. I have there tubular upper A arms with tall ball joints, stock lowers that I modified for strength. Rears are tubular also with air assist coil bags (cuz I still haul stuff once in awhile). UMI frame braces, springs are Eibach's with Monroe gas shocks (<my next upgrade). Front sway is 1 1/4", rear is 1". I went with a junk yard Jeep GC steering box and yes they are Boss 338's with Nitto rubber. Got a mild 350 .040 over with forged flats, stock heads, RPM air gap, solid cam, 650 Holley, MSD dizzy, 6A box. Trans is 700R4 with lock up converter and soon to be 3:73's out back. The truck does very well for what is done on my budget. This is no high dollar ride by any means

Danny72
03-19-2013, 10:11 PM
That's really cool! I want to build the motor a little more but I have to save money for a posi because when I turn left hard it bogs down and jumps around. I keep checking pick n pull for el caminos, Chevelles, monte carlos, etc. anything that might have a posi and a 12 bolt so it will fit my rearend. What size wheels and tires do you run? I really want 338's but I'm not sure if 20's are too big.

HELLCAMINO
03-20-2013, 02:14 AM
I wouldn't go 20's in my opinion, 18's are just perfect for it. I have 8's front and 9.5's rear. Front tires are 245/40's rears are 275/40's. I know that 285/35's will fit also, but very tight.

HELLCAMINO
03-20-2013, 05:08 AM
Hey Ryan, The fronts are 4.5, the rears are like 5.013 (needs 5.5 to be safe) I have rubbed the outer lips a bit when auto crossing and forgot to add some air to the coil bags. That's the problem with Boss wheels, no other bs for that size rim.

I decided today that even if the parts come in I won't have time to put them all on and I'm not missing the autocross at goodguys this weekend so I put the old air shocks back on. Any body know what pressure is better for autocross with factory air shocks? High or low? And what tire pressure?

Danny72
03-20-2013, 07:10 PM
DSE didn't finish the swivel links for the rear control arms so they will send them to me when they're done. Rear shocks are on the way. MCB has the best customer service! I'm really excited to get all the parts in and put them on. I'll post pictures of all the parts when they're all here.

Here are the old air shocks i pulled out and had to put back in.

We found a leak in the front right quarter and behind the driver seat so we took the interior apart and plugged it. We also took advantage of having the interior out to put down sound deadening material all over the floor. A major problem that came up was that my windshield wipers wouldn't work and it was rainy season. It was frustrating my dad and I for so long that we couldn't find the problem. We replace the motor, switch, and almost got a new harness. Turns out part of the ground wire was bad so we found a ground wire and replaced it and it works better than ever now. Such a small thing caused so much headache.

We found a cowl hood at a junkyard a while back and took it. $75 vs. $250 you bet I'm taking it lol. Sanded some of the surface rust and big paint chips and primered it. I drive with it on now.

The first time I drove it after fixing the leak, a clip on the u-joint on the back of the driveshaft comes of on the freeway on the way to my soccer game. I have the best Dad ever. He dropped what he was doing to come give me his truck so I can go to my game and had my car fixed by the time I got home.

LOL that's awesome. I'm just glad I get to do what I love with my dad. I learn a lot from him. When I got the car he told me "just do what you feel you want to do with your car and ill help you in any way I can." My dad sometimes talks about if I ever want to sell my car but I stop him and tell him I'm never going to sell it. It will be my first and last car I will ever have. Hopefully your son will get the same enjoyment you seem to with it.

Yeah I can't wait until I get all the suspension parts in. I'm too excited! Everybody I talked to this weekend told me I'll feel the great difference when I get the parts on. Wheels will have to wait a while though. My dads a real original kinda guy. I'm thinking BOSS 338 18X9.5 rear and 18X8.5 front. Unsure what tire profile to go with though. Ill be ready to go by June Goodguys for sure. Maybe do a little solo in between.

Picked up a MSD 6AL digital ignition control box from Vic Hubbard. Time to get a little more juice out of my motor. Guys over at Vic Hubbard helped a lot with explaining the install cause my dad and I aren't really the sharpest knives in the drawer when it comes to wiring. Rear control arms should come in from DSE at the beginning of next week and I'm on spring break so its perfect.

So today my dad wanted to drop the front suspension so we can start replacing it but i want all the parts to come in before we begin replacing it. Instead I told him I wanted to install the MSD ignition control box we got yesterday and that's exactly what we did. It gave me a little more torque. And the box has a rev limiter. Now i just need a tach so I can set the rev limiter up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/03/IMG_0508_zpsec2ccdb8-1.jpg

I had to climb inside the engine bay to really reach the distributor.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/03/IMG_0511_zpsa019fa76-1.jpg

I didn't like the look of the box with the vibration mounts, stuck out like a sore thumb. So we used 5/8 screws and used those to mount the box to the fire wall.

Yeah the Goodguys course is pretty small but its so theres no need for helmets or serious safety gear. I want to move onto a bigger road race course but i haven't been able to work on my car yet so larger courses will have to wait a while. Plus I need a lot more seat time.

Finally got to start working on my car again right when i got home from school. Homework can wait. Just doing the front end this weekend. Might do the rear next weekend.

To start i got all the parts laid out in the driveway. I was excited to say the least.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_0673_zps712ed692-1.jpg

Reat all laid out.

Front all laid out.

Rotors and calipers first to come off.

Almost ready to drop the control arm to get the spring out. Gonna have to reuse the wishbone.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_0679_zpsa38887df-1.jpg

The BMR springs have done me good so far but it's time to step up a little.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_0681_zps7173f0f5-1.jpg

Now just to take out the control arms. Last time it was a pain so I expect nothing less this time.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_0682_zps154fc464-1.jpg

Upper control arm wont clear the headers.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_0683_zpsd8832d94-1.jpg

Since we're not gonna use these control arms again, We're gonna shave some of the extra metal to get the control arm to clear without having to completely take off the header.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/IMG_0687_zps272a407d-1.jpg

Ended up cutting the cross bar (not sure exactly what its called) of the control arm to wiggle it out.

Got both control arms out. Thats it for today. I'll continue tomorrow morning and hopefully get the other side all torn apart so we can start putting new parts on.

Got a good bit of work done today in the time we had. My dad had to leave to a party around 3:00 so had to cut it a little short. We got both upper and lower control arms on both sides in and got the sway bar mounted to the frame. all thats left are spindles, shocks, and springs. Then it's on to the back hopefully next weekend.

First thing we did was stuff the upper control arm in on passenger side.

While I got the passenger side started my dad started on the driver side.

Upper and lower control arms in. lower control arm was a bit of a fight to get in but I won with a little help from a dead blow hammer.

Have to remove steering column and headers to get the control arm out. Pain in the... but oh so worth it.

If anyone is looking or know someone who is looking for some sport springs for a 68-72 GM A-body, I have the springs i just took out of my car.

They are BMR 1" drop springs. Not sure on what the spring rate is. I've had them on the car for a little under a year and they have worked great. They're as stiff as when i put them on. They have a couple paint scratches hear and there but no major damage. I also have some KYB gas-a-just shocks that i will either sell separate or with the springs. Thought I'd post them on here before i put them anywhere else.

BMR 1" Lowering springs- $85 OBO
KYB GAS-A-JUST shocks- $30 OBO
Pakage deal- $100 OBO

We finished!! the front end at least. lol I didn't post the last couple days cause we worked all day long and i was really tired by the time we finished. My mom let my dad and I stay home while she went to sacramento to visit my grandma on mothers day. Best mom ever! I was determined to finish the front end today so my dad and I pushed all day through the cold wind to finish. once we dropped the car I told my dad I'm driving this car tonight no matter what. Right when we finished I hopped in and started it up and was super excited. I haven't heard the sound of her in too long. I took it easy, for the first turn at least. Then I got it up to speed a little and made the first tight turn. I laughed in amazement of how well it took the turn. Barely any front body roll, very little steering input and it slingshot me around the corner. It's a totally different world driving that car now. I had a straight away and got it up to speed again and did somewhat of a slolom and it just stuck and did exactly what i wanted it to do and more. I pulled back into the driveway with the biggest smile on my face while my dad watched me pull up. I told him to drive it around to feel the difference and he told me that he wants to wait until we finish the rear. DSE did a fantastic job with this suspension. Not too firm and bouncy but when you need it to handle in a turn it will most definitely will stick. I'm thoroughly pleased with DSE's suspension and glad we got it from them. In a few weeks I'll start the rear. I'm already excited for that day. Most likely won't be next week cause I'm doing an oil change in my auto tech class next week and I got student of the year in my auto tech class and the ceremony is next wednesday. Now onto some pictures.

My dad mounting the wishbone to the new spindle and the spindle mounted.

I had to clearance the caliper mounting bracket on the lower mounting hole cause the new spindle is much larger than the old one so i got a bit more practice with the cutting wheel.

Got to work on the Elco today. We got the shocks springs and sway bar in so I'll have it for Goodguys this weekend. We don't want to try to put the control arms on this week and cut it close for Goodguys. We'll finish with the control arms the following week so we have all the time we want. We drilled and bolted the upper sway bar end link brackets to the crossmember the other day they were all ready for the sway bar. I figured out how to adjust the shocks finally. lol couldn't feel the "clicks" so I turned it all the way stiff the turned it back a half turn since it's not supposed to be all the way and I want it to be stiff since it's quite a hassle to have to take them out and adjust them without a lift. It didn't take long to get everything put on with my dad and I working very smoothly together. We make a great team. I drove it around the block, not to hard, but enough to test out how the rear is now. It's like a real sports car now. doesn't lean much at all. Sticks in any turn i throw it into. I do want to eventually get a harness bar installed behind the seats so I'm not holding onto the shifter or the window. I'm super excited for Goodguys this weekend. Hopefully those actually following are enjoying my minor build. I know it's no Marry Pozzi camaro or Mike Maier mustang caliber build or all the other amazing cars on here but I'm enjoying the heck out of her and I'm the only kid at my school with an old school muscle car. Thanks for all the support it's really appreciated.

The sway bar end link hole had to be drilled out. The end link couldn't fit. Easy fix.

Came home the other day and my dad had his camaro out. He charged the battery, checked the oil and backed her back in. But I got to back her in which is the only way I'll ever get to drive it. I love seeing her outside. He keeps her in the garage 90% of the year. We always tell him to drive it and take it to shows but he doesn't want to. Maybe you guys can convince him. lol Its restored to completely stock. It's been in m our family before I was. She's a thing of beauty.

Had a blast today at goodguys. DSE suspension worked great. I probably would have done even better if only I could get some traction. Open rear end sucks on a course with 80% right turns. Next time hopefully ill come with either a posi or LSD and some weight in the back. But this weekend I'm still having a great time. Came in 3rd today in truck class. I'm just here to have fun and run my car around without getting in trouble. Can't wait for tomorrow.

Had a blast this weekend at Goodguys in Pleasanton. My fastest time was 36.776 but I know it can get better if a get a little more traction. Came in 3rd in truck class and I'm happy about it. I'm just like there to have a good time. I'll be putting the rear control arms on soon so ill have a complete suspension. Got some good tips on how to get more traction by adding a steel plate across the frame in front of the axle. Can't wait until November.

Finally got back to work on the elco today. I've been dealing with school stuff and college stuff and I also had graduation the other weekend. Now that I have time I'm getting back to the car. Got the rear end out today and got the control arms all changed and ready for the rear end to go back in. We're gonna be sending the car to a rear end shop a little past livermore to get a new gear set put in. While I was talking to the guy who was going to be doing the work and I told him what I was going to use the car for and he recommended that I put in a tru-trac over just a posi. I've never dealt with a tru-trac but have heard about people using them. If anyone knows more or can offer any input on if it's a good decision or is there something else out there better. I'm also going to get longer gears because the factory gears are just way too short. 65 mph in fourth gear and it sounds like I'm taching at 3500rpm. If anyone knows what gears I should run or what you guys have with somewhat a similar setup. Hoping that once I get this all settled I'll be getting inot more autocrossing events around here instead of only have Goodguys to race. Not that it's bad, not at all, I just want more seat time. I have the autocross bug baaaad!! Thanks guys.

Thanks! Really appreciate it. I'm so glad I get to build my car with my dad. I make sure he gets credit for all that he does for me. He's included in every post cause I can't do 80% of this stuff on my own and I'm glad he's there to teach me.

So we got the rear end back in yesterday. Went pretty smooth. Had to loosen all the arms again so that we could move them into place for the rear end. only hard part was getting to torque the control arm bolts that have a torque spec of 110ft/lbs. Only thing is that while we had the car on the jack stands and allowed the rear end to hang it went so low that the upper ball joint of the end link of the sway bar came out and ripped the boot around it so it can't get a good seal. Simply ordered a new one from DSE for $55 and is supposed to get here by the 8th. Guess i won't be driving with a sway bar for a couple weeks. This tuesday we're taking the car to the rear end shop to have the new gear set put in. I'm really anxious to see how she drives after. I'm a bit tired of one-wheel burnouts.

Couldn't really get pictures while we were putting it in cause I was just trying to get it in and drive it.

Rear looks a little higher to me but it just might be that the bushings of the control arms may need to break in a bit cause the were rock solid while the car was in the air.

Nice work on the Elco- 68-72's have always been my favorite, so naturally I like yours too. I like those rubber chocks you are using to block the front tires, but do yourself a favor and toss those sheetmetal jackstands in the trash- I've seen them fold up more than once and the results can be fatal if you're unlucky to be under the car when it happens. Keep up the good work and happy wrenching.

Thanks! I appreciate it! Yeah we try not to use those jack stands as much as we can. Those are really old and we've had them forever. We have other stronger ones we use most of the time but we needed the height to get the rear end out smoothly and the ones we usually use are too short and the have less of a contact patch than the red ones. We are probably going to get rid of them soon. Thanks for the advice.

I like your car, brings back memories of my youth, I'm currently rebuilding my 1970 Elky it was also my High school car (1981 grad).
I have a spare frame from a 71 if you want it, I'm out in the San Joaquin valley.

That's awesome! Thanks but I'll have to pass on the 71 frame, we're just putting parts on as we go. Someday when I have the funds and the time I hope to do a full frame-off build and make a full blown pro-touring car out of it cause I love seeing the kind of odd-ball pro-touring cars that you wouldn't think of it being a pro-touring car. Thanks though.

Thanks! Yeah I really want some 18" Boss 338 but it will take quite a bit of convincing for my dad to get on board with that idea. He really likes the rally wheels, and don't get me wrong they're great looking, but I like more of a modern look and bigger wheels will make it handle a little better too. Next step is paint and then maybe wheels. Slowly but surely.

Thanks George! Sorry i never posted about the rear end. The guy the did the work opened the rear end up and told me I had 3.36 gears inside. I originally was thinking about getting slightly longer gears so it would be more freeway friendly but after talking with him he said the next longer gear was a 3.08 and if i wanted to get more of an autocross gear I'd go in the opposite direction and go to a 3.73. So since It's still a daily driver but will see more frequent autocross I decided to stick with the 3.36 since it was a good medium and just have him put in a tru-trac and replace both axle shafts because the bearing seal on the left side was bad and was leaking onto the brakes so he replaced both. I can tell the difference going around corners that it does bog down making a left turn. And two wheel burnouts are way more fun then one wheel.

Man those jackstands are a throwback to the ones my dad has - he's had that same set for 30+ years.

I never liked them because the thin metal that the top part where you rest the car on was easy to bend.

That rear end swap is looking damn good!

Thanks! Yeah those jackstands barely get any use. It's actually funny that you say that cause the top piece of metal is bent down on all four corners on all four jackstands.

Vettes looking great BTW! Been following for a while.

Thanks man - no updates on the Vette for awhile.

Still gathering engine parts - still deciding if putting the wide body front end on, or engine gets built....

So the elco is all done suspension wise. For right now anyways. We got it back from the rear end shop a couple weeks back and had a tru-trac installed and kept the same 3.36 gear ratio. We also got the end link for the rear sway bar from DSE and got it put on with no problem. Only thing was the the bolts for the slip-lock collars for the rear sway bar stripped when I first installed them and they wouldn't torque correctly so we re-threaded them and got some longer, stronger bolts and put them on and they worked perfectly. The water pump on the other hand cracked on the fourth of july at my aunts house and was spitting anti-freeze all over the street so I drove it home slowly with my dad following just in case. next day we got a new water pump from Vic Hubbard and put it on with new lower hose and we got a new power steering pump because the old one would leak and make noise when i would turn the steering wheel at idle. now thats all fixed and running. Soon I'm trying to get into more and more local events to get more seat time and keep improving but i can't seem to know when theses events are and classes and all that so if anyone knows about the events or knows where I can find out where events are near the bay area it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Great Job on the El Camino Danny. I helped my Son with our first project 10 years ago. Now he's helping me finish my overdue project. He's the body/paint guy, I'm more on the mechanical side of things. But, true to form, I made him do most of the work on his car, (and he's making me do most of the work on my car) :)

I like what you've done so far. I'm with you on the larger wheels. I'm actually only about an hour or so from you. If you ever want to see what your Elky would look like with 17" Hopsters we can throw it on the rack and do a quick swap.

Thanks Dan! Yeah my dad and I are more of the mechanical type too but I really want to get into body work and paint. Glad to know that you guys are doing it together. That's what makes my car special is working on it with my dad and always learning and bonding with him. Its a project that will never be fully finished. I'll always be tweaking things and improving the car to my liking. I won't sell it for any amount of money. Too much sentimental value.

I might have to take you up on that and see what she looks like with bigger wheels. Shes only ever worn rallys. I'll definitely let you know and I'll talk to my dad about it. Thanks a lot!

Hey George,
Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I haven't looked at this thread in a while. I did go to Pleasanton this past weekend and had a great time. I do need some new tires now though. How's the lightning? I was hoping to see it at Goodguys.

Thanks! I really appreciate it. Yeah thats one of the next items on the list. Just need to find the wheels I want and have them be affordable. It's kinda good I keep the car at my parents so i don't go through tires a lot so I have time to search for wheels.
