UMI is pleased to offer a first look at our high travel coilover kit for 64-72 GM A-body. This weld-in kit replaces the upper spring pocket with a double shear mount in the proper location to accept a 7 inch stroke, 2-1/2" ID industry standard coilover. Our test vehicle is outfit with awesome Afco Pro-Tour Elite dampers and 500lb/in coils. We chose the 500's to maximize wire diameter and ensure fitment of all popular rates. The damper is 20" extended and 13" compressed which also means you can use Afco's other damper models as well as most other 7" travel shocks. At full compression, the kit offers 1/4" exposed shaft and at full rebound with a 0/9" tall ball joint, the shaft is exposed 5-1/2". This allows the kit to be a true extended travel coilover kit encompassing the full range of travel available. A kit like this, while requiring fabrication skill, allows the customer to select the perfect damping and spring rate and also allows cars to run at a low ride height with no trouble.

First picture shows a potential kit with Afco Pro-Tour shocks. The balance are pictures of the kit installed on our chassis.

Well those are awesome.

Is it just cutting and welding and bolting?

Well those are awesome.

Is it just cutting and welding and bolting?

Basically you trace the half moon shape and cut out the top of the chassis (not for the faint of heart) and carefully fit the bracket in. It slides straight down in and then bolts to the upper a-arm mount to locate everything properly. Once it's all verified, you can finish weld.

It's best to check travel and make sure all is well before final welding. The 7" shock allows an awesome travel range.

good job!

Do you think that much travel is needed for an autocross car? Are you planning on adding a droop limiter?

Hi Bryce.

Yes, we are looking at ways to incorporate a poly bump stop on the upper. Right now the cross shaft on our upper limits the rebound nicely but show customers won't like scuffing the powder coat on the arm. We'll do some testing this summer to see how much rebound travel we get. We'll also need to hit the dragstrip and test there, as I can envision this working nicely for drag cars.

Thanks Ramey,

I also have a 7" stroke shock in my Falcon. I really like the adjustability. My intent was to have a semi multipurpose car. When I run stiff springs I need to have a droop limiter to keep tension on the spring.

It would be really cool to see these used with a small bleed digressive shock, small sway bar, and fairly light spring. Good handling, good ride and compliant on real road surfaces...... awesome

Thanks Ramey,

When I run stiff springs I need to have a droop limiter to keep tension on the spring. Have you considered a crossover spring with a slider and limiter? That way you could use all the rebound travel without dislodging the spring.

The nice thing about this type of setup is we can use and consider the myriad of shock and spring options out there. We'll be looking at a ton of different combos I'm sure.

Hello, Thanks for the reply.

We actually haven't officially released it yet, that is why. However if someone wants a kit now we can build it and sell it.

The price for the two high travel brackets and hardware will be around $199 a pair, this then allows you to choose any shock and spring combination you would like. The kit as shown with the Afco Pro-Tour Elite canister shocks would be around $1,500.00. We are working on different shock packages which will be less expensive. The nice thing about these high travel kits is you can run virtually any brand shock with a 7" stroke.

If I can help anymore please ask. More information will be coming soon. Thanks,
