Is it better to have the shock as close to the balljoint as possible, or as far away as possible so that the shock travel is more vertical?

Its a trade off. I try to get the best motion ratio possible but I tend to aim for shock close to the ball joint.

Here is a shock angle calculator: http://www.proshocks.com/calcs/anglefirst.htm

One advantage is there is less bending force exerted on the lower arm, so it can be built lighter than one where the lower spring mount is in the middle of the span. Personally, I prefer to keep the spring as close to the wheel as practical. That gets me a lower spring rate and more motion on the shock.
