I am working on my 1968 Cougar and have decided to protour it out! Already have Baer brakes all around but need help with wheel and rim sizes...
I do not want to mini tub it but want to go with the biggest and widest rims I can tuck under there....
Rims size and offsets would help a lot
Thanks

I am running the following on my 68:
Front - 17x8 4.75" back spacing 245/45r17
Rear - 17x9.5 5.75 back spacing 285/40r17
Fenders and quarters are rolled for extra clearance. The rear rub inboard if I go up a steep driveway at an angle.

Thanks for the reply! I had saleen wheels on it at first.. 18x9 in back and it fit like a charm but the front I needed spacers for them to not hit the A arms, which made them stick out the fenders about a inch.... Got rid of them because they did not look right....

Now with your expierence, would say for instance a 2010-13 cobra wheels fit? California edition... 19x8s.... I'm not sure the offsets but would they have the same issue as theses saleen wheels?

You may want to verify the wheel width. I thought those years were 9.5" wide. With that said the fronts will not fit. The widest you can get away with on stock type front suspension is 8". You will still need to run wheel adapters/spacers though because the back spacing on the newer generation mustangs are a lot more that what we would need for our cars.

I was hoping someone on here could tell me if a 18x8 rim with a P235/50R18 would fit a 68 cougar

It should fit. Do you have any suspension mods? Being that I fit 17x8 you should be able to use 18x8 and get more clearance with the upper control. Just make sure the back spacing is spot on. If you don't have any mods keep an eye on the upper ball joint to wheel clearance. May also want to consider doing the Shelby/Arning upper control arm drop if you haven't done it yet.

One more question. Im looking at running a 16x8 4.5 offset with a 245/50r16 all around. I have seen other fitment guides with a max of 225 for the 68 XR7. Will I be able to get away with the wider tire without and rubbing?

With the 16x8 I would be concerned with the upper control arm ball joint area coming in contact with the wheel itself. At a minimum, the upper control arms will need to be lowered a la shelby/arning to increase clearance. Also, with the 4.5 back spacing, you may be also hitting the fender lip.

Anybody got some updates with their rear 9” fitment on the ‘67-68 Cougars?

I'm seeking advice here to determine if an 18x8 rim with a P235/50R18 tire would be compatible with a '68 Cougar.
