Hey guys I am about to upgrade from a 15 inch wheel to a 17 inch wheel on my 69 GTO. I already have a set of low profile Wilwood disc brakes on the rear but I am running stock size front disc brakes. They work great but I am not sure if upgrading to 17 inch wheels requires a larger brake upgrade due to the extra mass. Do I need larger brakes with 17 inch wheels or is stock ok? Purely a safety question.

Make the call once you put the new wheels on. What material will your new wheels be? They could be close the the weight of your steel 15" ones if they are billet.

I am looking at the year one 17x8 Rally II. I currently have the Specialty Wheel 15x8 Rally II. I think the year ones are billet

I have a set of YO Rally II's on my LeMans. They are cast aluminum and heavy. I want to say their close to stock weights maybe a bit over but I'm not 100%. The weights should be somewhere on this forum if not Performance Years.

For a street car, the added inertia of the 17" wheels should not be a deal "braker" (pun intended) for the OE front disc brakes. If you decide you want a little more brake torque and/or initial bite, you can always play with your pad compounds. It's not like you're dubbing the thing with 24's.

When I got my YO Rally II's I also switched over to a set of EBC RedStuff pads. There are far more aggressive than you standard OE replacement pad. My only complaint is the amount if brake dust they produce. It's noticeable, even on these wheels which have such small openings.
