I keep going back and forth on this and I just can't make up my mind. I currently have a T10 with a W ratio which I completely rebuilt just before installing in the car. I'm running a 3.50 rear gear with a 26" tall tire. The 48 Hour Camaro initially used a Muncie and a GV unit but later switched to a T56. Pricing on a GV unit and a T56 is nearly identical and both would require a drive shaft mod so cost is not the determining factor. So my question is given the same cost which is the better setup and why?

T-56 all the way! You will be much happier!! Since your T-10 was just rebuilt, you will have no problems selling it.

With the price are you looking at the cost of the clutch and all the little nickle and dime stuff that will pop up during the swap? Plus a t56 is alot larger then a T10 and some trans tunnel work might have to be done. The GV would be alot less work to put in, just unbolt the driveshaft throw the GV on and wire up a button and put your new driveshaft in. My input would be tho if you are not afraid of the work to swap over to the t56 that would be the better of the two.

The clutch would not need to be swapped. When I swapped from a T-10 to a T56, I just bolted it on. You will need to deal with the cross member and possible tunnel massaging. Well worth it tho IMO

ok...I have let the others chime in and now my question is, what is the use of the car now, street mainly, street leaning towards autocross, street towards track, autocross only, track only?

Currently the primary use is street, but I intend to do some track days and autoX. The biggest issue I have with the 4 speed is that hiway speeds are uncomfortable with no OD. I'm not convinced I need a double OD but a .80 OD would be just about right. My biggest issue against the GV unit is that I think it is over priced compared to a complete T56.

You can't spilt shift the t56 gv will give 8 close ratio gears. I have one and LOVE it!

Also a gv can handle 1000 hp easily or more if you tell them what your using it for

How would that work with a wide ratio?

Someone else here posted this same conundrum a while back. Usually, simpler seems to be better, but we all get gadgets stuck in our heads--they just don't disappear until you buy them...

I have a GV behind a TH-400 and I'm not overly impressed with it. I would go with the close ratio 6 speed in your case. I have a Rockland tranzilla with ZR-1 gearing and it's by far the best shifting manual trans I've ever owned. The 2:29 first gear is the berries for auto-x.

I've got a TH-400 with a GV and I like it. I mostly went that route for a highway gear which is awesome. Being able to split the other 2 gears is nice in town. Like others have said depends what you want it for. Plus the install was easy!

I've got a GV unit behind a manual shift Hughes TH400 and I love the combo. With that said if I had a mild small block around 500hp I would prefer the manual 6speed and more rear gear. If you're making massive torque, then I would go for the GV and something stronger than the 4speed. My 502 is good to 7100 rpm and gets downright grumpy driving through town in OD at 1800rpm. In first gear with the OD triggered I can keep it happy at around 2500rpm. Being able to split gears keeps me in the most efficient rpm band for both mileage and performance.
