Thanks man. I've been a good boy and kept it quiet for the past what...6 months? It was definitely a juggling act with the PHR project, regular freelance work, and then my 9-6 day job. Yup, I've been busy, but enjoying almost every minute of it!

Kris, did you get a good deal on the engine? I am also looking into a 460W Man-O-War. Right now they are pricey @ $11k.

I can not believe it, got mine in the mail today. Usually it is about a week later than the first ones out. Must have a new crew in the local post office.
Probably the best issue since I started back reading PHR. That or the simple fact I know alot of the people mentioned or in print this month. It is neat to feel so associated with a national publication. I think we can all thank Larry, Johnny, Steve and others that promote the Protouring scene, both here and in PHR.
Kris's renderings are as usual dead on, even though there are several cars that I personally would not pick ( the Imperial,Cutlass and Lincoln).
I really like the Torino and the Laguna. However, being the oddball that I am, my favorite is the Riviera. It kinda reminds me of another GM body about the same shape and year. :naughty: You know, I am into the Prosled movement too.
Kutos to Michael, Andrew,Frank and the whole crew at Prodigy. It is refreshing to see an up and coming pro that is not building rice.
Great job guys on a killer issue!

Lots of reasons.. sometimes it's a deal we make to get a car, sometimes it is driven by business reasons but most of the time it goes to the car that ended up in the "best picture".. best color, composure and all that stuff..

Thanks for the compliment. I am working on a "wallpaper" section to my website where large images will be held for download. We don't do many posters because they are extremely expensive.

Glad you like it.. I on the other hand have already gotten a hate-mail for a budding comic that hates the whole pro-touring g-machine thing. Sometimes I think they just try and be witty in order to get in the magazine. A tiny sample..

-----
...I'm to the point that at car shows I can't stand to look at a "G" car anymore, you've shoved your idea of your perfect car down my throat so far I'm gagging at the first glimpse of one! That doesn't make the persons car any less of a nice car but your idealistic ways of what you think every car should be has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I can't go near one. In this issue, October 2005, you can't even fill the pages with real cars, you've got 12 pages, plus a cover shot of cars that are just smoke and mirrors! Are you in bed with the Primedia honchos or something? ...
----

Most of the mail is positive though.. Anyone want to bet this guy has a tubbed Vega with a 671 that runs high 13's.. :rotfl:

Oh, the 10 rendered cars only displaced ONE feature car (of a real car).. I think it was worth it to show people that "out of the box" cars can be cool too. And, as a side note, I wouldn't have picked a couple of the cars either but as the FNG that is not my call, I think they do all look cool and I am jonesing for a Laguna right now.. lol

I take credit for that. Some of the cars on the original list were hopeless cases, so I made a push for something a little more mainstream, but something that hasn't been done in the PT style very much.

I just walked in the door (Sunday) from a business trip and haven't even thumbed through the magazine yet but had to get on here and comment about the cover.......BADDEST COVER EVER!!! Steve - the mag keeps getting better and better. Kudos to you and everyone involved.

The IIMuch article is great, as usual. I could look at those welds all day. Very nice, JP!

parsonsj
08-16-2005, 04:45 AM
Some of those welds were done using thumb controls instead of a pedal control. If only I had had that when I did the roll cage!

Kris really helped me out too: Johnny wanted a better story cover shot, so Kris' rendering filled the bill.

John Ulaszek shot the whole article over a grueling 10 hours last January in my freezing cold garage. He spent most of the time that day rolling around on the concrete floor managing light and framing shots.

I bought a heater for the garage after that. JohnU was pissed I didn't get the heater before then. :)

I hope some of the mystery of a 3 link has been dispelled, and remember that Katz has taken his design skills over to Lateral Dynamics in San Diego. I understand they have some 3 link products coming out.

I just picked up an issue yesterday, and it was superb! The only complaint (?) that I would have is that one of the cars picked for illustrative purposes was not a non-Mustang Ford Fox body. It would have been REALLY cool if Kris had done a rendering on either a Fairmont Futura/Zephyr Z-7 or a Granada/Cougar.

But then again, I do have a vested interest in this issue, seeing that I have an '82 Cougar sedan.................................

But seriously, this issue ROCKED!!! I do agree with everyone else concerning the Chevrolet Laguna.

There were many cars that should have/could have been on the list but only had room for nine..

Next year we should do 18 cars you need to build.. lol

Great issue all around. Wow.

As for the renderings- I liked the Riviera the best with those lines and the two-tone. The '82 Camaro was hurting though. A lot of later model third gen Camaro's are in the same price range with better drivetrains and body panels, especially better front bumper covers. Those early ones are just, I don't know what to call them, but maybe better off left alone either in the junkyard or the perfect ones that are just
"kept" for now.

It was cool to see such a huge PT.com member base profiled in one way or another in one issue.

Although we saw the WinGeo printouts for the suspension effects, I would have liked to see the actual measurements for the pickup points as well - how long are teh control arms ? How much do they converge in plan view ? In other words what are the x,y,z coordinates of the suspension system.

GREAT pictures though.

I wonder what II Much will weigh ?

I'll dig that info up ... I've got it around here somewhere. Ulaszek did do some fine photos.

I'm hoping for somewhere around 3000 lbs, but I really have no idea what to expect.

I got my issue yesterday, finally. It was a great issue, and I really enjoyed Steve's features. The '72 Torino was one of my favorites, Kris did a great job with those renderings. My only complaint is--that Ventura is NOT a Street Fighter. A Street Fighter is a g-machine taken to the next level. Ie: Less refinement, more capability (handling, braking, acceleration) it is not a mix between pro-touring and pro-street. The Ventura would be better classified as "Modern Pro-Street" other cars in that category include Mike Desmond's Chevelle, and the year one nova. I don't mean this as an attack on Steve or PHR, just for clarifications sake. I just don't want to see every person at a car show with 17 or 18" drag radials thinking their otherwise stock-suspended car is a street fighter. The main problem with the name is it lends itself to just that. Street Fighter sounds like it has something to do with street racing, and most of the faster street racers (who don't just run ET streets or slicks) run 17 or 18" wheels with a decent sized DR in the back. I guess this is why it's a common misconception of what a Street Fighter truly is.

Example of Street Fighter:

uh oh , here we go again.

So far like this months phr and hr.

Ralph LoGrasso

It is an endless debate, but more so with the terms pro-touring and g-Machine. For so long, Street Fighter was held sacred to those very few in the know. LOL Call me the StreetFighter crusader.

sooner or later the term streetfighter will just mean one thing or the other.

when i was a little kid i used to read car mags and when they would say "blown motor" I was lost.

"he was out of the race with a blown motor"

"of course he will win, he has a blown motor"

Also I almost forgot, that '08 GNX was right on the money. I loved the design of that car(LS2 power would be a plus!). Cudos to Kris, Johnny, Steve and anyone else who had a hand in that. I would love to see GM build that car, and it really is the thing that could save Buick. When was the last time you got excited driving past a Buick dealership? 1987? C'mon GM, open up your eyes!

Well it is sorta hard to classify any car that is only a rendering.. maybe the rendering had a basic, tossed together interior.. mediocer paint and a strong but low bling motor?

;)

Touche! LOL, very true. I think the biggest thing was the rear tire. While it looks awesome on there, it just will not be the best handling tire there is. Now, with that being said--that rendering has me wanting a '73 Ventura, lol. The front end on that car is absolutely gorgeous.

Well you know how it is when a term gets out there.. I said the term once around here and people were all over it.. I am doing my best but you are lucky every car hasn't been tagged with the title.. lol..

I've had to give it a more generic definition as a car low on bling and high on performance.. a trench fighter (new term?) in the the world of cars.. The blue Nova on the August cover is what I consider to be a street fighter. So sue me, I couldn't find it in the dictionary..

But I will TRY to keep the term pure.. ok, moving on now.. this thread was supposed to be all about Kris!! (he paid me $20 to say that)..

LOL, I'm calling up Merriam(sp) Webster tomorrow and requesting it be added! Street Fighter will no doubt be overused in the future, so I guess this is an uphill battle anyways. Your efforts to keep it pure will be much appreciated, though.

Yes--moving on. Kris' work has really been taken to the next level. We're going to be working on some new renders of my car with the new '68 model and I really can't wait to see him work his magic on them.

I believe it's the only time one of their covers was completely renderings (the subcover at least) but I have had both my Camaro concept and Charger concept on the covers as well, thought they were insets in the top corners.

Johnny was very adamant about getting my art on the cover, so I owe a lot to him for that.

The Riveria is pretty cool. Steve Cook just finished one for a guy in CA that is almost exactly like the rendering. It was cool looking. It has already has some press I think in Custom Rodder and one or two other publications.

Kris, I would hate to know how much time you got in the GNX but I thought it was real when I flipped the page. Absolutely awesome. Did GM help out and give you a CAD template to start with or what? I think it is your best work yet.

Has nobody caught JP's rendering yet? I have not read a post on it yet. I can't wait to see the real thing! Excellent build up photos and story. This is what I like to read about!

Mike,

That GNX was all me. I had NOTHING to go off of. Johnny said "base it on the Holden Torana concept. I agreed to it before I found out there were only 2 pictures of it in existence....so I got to design it from the ground up. I didn't have very much time to refine it unfortunately, but I like how it came out for the time I do have in it.

I am really grooving on the Cougar and the Laguna, but the Ventura has its assets also. It would be really cool if one but a Ventura up as a Trans Am, much like Steve Strope is building a Nova as a Z/28 now. Drop a 455 under the hood (with a shaker scoop, of course!), back it with a Tremec, fit it with J18 disc brakes all around, shod it with PS Engineering rims, and one would really be ready to rock and roll!!!

That slotted grille does make the Ventura look totally cool!
