View Full Version : Why is a Pilot Super Sport 325/30/19 much wider than a 335/30/19 NTo5?

I ordered a few tires just to check their overall dimensions and how they fit in my rear wells and noticed that the 325/30/19 Pilot Super Sport is over an inch wider than the 335/30/19 Nitto NTo5
How and why is this the case? Shouldn't the larger 335 be taller and wider? The Michellin is not as tall overall but it is just wider by over an inch it seems.

Im going crazy trying to find the ideal tire size for a 19X12 that will fit and still look good.

I also have on hand a 345/30/19 Pilot Super Sport which will not fit unless the quarter panels get modified alot and this is out of the equation.

You definitely have to watch the Super Sport sizes as they do tend to be wider (both sidewall and tread) than many of the other brands. I know that the 305s are roughly dimensionally equivalent to 315s and the 325s are about the same of other guys 335s (as you pointed out). Tire Rack is a pretty good resource for accurate dimensions.

FWIW I ran the Super Sport 305s at OUSCI in 2011 and I ran the 325s for OLOA last year. This year I have the 305s on the front and will probably match them on the back.

thanks for the heads upI always though Pilots and Nittos both ran on the small side where as a BFG and Goodyear run much larger in the same sizes.

I was surprised at such a size variance. I would like to run the Pilot Supersport but the sidewall is much lower and rubber band like and im not sure i want that.

the NTO5 looks small compared inside the wheel well.

I am going to check Tire Rack maybe there is another size i can try on the Pilots but i think it goes from 325 to 345 with no in between or 315's

I'm running the PS2 325/30/19's as well. I think there's plenty of sidewall, as this was also my concern. I compared it to my stock wheel set up I had on my E92 M3, and these have actually more sidewall. I may try and go a little wider, once I wear these away. However, it's not the width, but the height I'm concerned with. The wider I go, the taller the tire, and right now I'm kinda pushing it with a 27" tire under the rear.

Good info though, thanks for sharing....

Can you post photos of your car so i can see the ps2 mounted on a rim?

The nitto nto5 looks way narrower but it could be because it isnt on a rim. The nitto height and sidewall i like better. I have to maybe wait until my wheels arrive and test both tires out.

Awesome car i recognize if from Camaro Performers coverage. Are you running 19 up front? Are the rear wheels 12 wide?

Here's a thread with pics. I'm sure I have a few more if you'd like to see more.

I've noticed a larger difference in section width and also tread width on different brand and style tires.

In theory, every 325-30-19 should be 10mm narrower than the 335-30-19, but if you get an overly generous tire manufacturer like Michelin (or BFG as another good example), what you talk about happens.

I have 4 different 275-40-17 tires in the shop now - Nitto NT05, Falken 615K, Continental DW, and BFG g-force sports. The BFG are about 1/2" wider in section and tread width than the Contis - and also weigh 4lbs more each. The Nittos and Falkens are close in tread width, but are smaller in section width than the BFG - they also weight less by a pound or two. All tires have the same exact overall diameter.

Considering how rigid you would think the specs for modern tires are, why would there be such a variance? If I want a 295 width tire, it should measure 295mm in section width regardless of brand or style, not 305 - and not 300. This presents an amplified problem on wheels that are at the minimum width for a given size, although most of us don't have that problem with our PT cars.

what bothers is me all tire manufactures should follow a size standard because of these variances it can leave us thinking a certain size will fit when it might not etc. i still have not decided on which tire to go with but I am leaning toward the Pilots since it is a better street tire than the Nitto from my experiences.

I am running the new Supersport in that exact size...its a stock Z06 size! I will tell you this is the best tire I have ever installed on a car...my dad was retired in the biz so I have run plenty of tires over my lifetime. Here is a pic if you want a idea what it looks like installed...

photo of the two tires side by side, the 325 pilot super sport seems visually wider and when i measured from bead to bead it is around 3/8 more than the Nitto Nt05 bead width

the Nitto looks tall in the photo but i think its under 27 inches
