Yes, I received an email today informing me I was one of the 7 finalist. Just checked carcraft.com and they have the seven finalists posted. Thanks to everyone who voted for me.

Kind of disappointing Jeff S and Andrew B did not make it. Either of those cars could kick the doo doo out of a couple of those cars. Glad to see the Camaro in, You may need to consider turning up the wick a bit to compete in some of the horsepower test, A couple of those are pretty damn strong

I think the late model Camaro will probably win.

Right now they're saying Norwalk Raceway Park in Ohio. I'm adding a little more power now, but not enough to make it past the middle of the pack in the quarter. And if I don't invest in some compitition type tires, I can forget the handling and stopping also. But should be fun anyway.

The Corvair is owned by a local friend of mine. He autocrosses regularly, and used to be a circle track racer. Knows his way down the dragstrip too. His car is really trick with carbon engine cover etc and is fast.
I'd say he'll have a good shot at it.
I am disappointed Evil Spirit didn't make it, 635hp with 2800 lbs and a near pro driver owner......

I was mildly disappointed that the car for which I voted didn't make the cut. However, the candidates that did make it were excellent candidates, IMHO.
I am very much looking forward to entering my beloved Cougar sedan in a future RSE!

I must admit I'm surprised the news has not spread like crazy. I know who the winner is. It's almost like it's being kept as a secret? I'll ask and see if I'm supposed to keep it under my hat. I'm sure they would rather wait until the magazine hits the stands though.

I would of liked to seen the event, but I guess that was a secret too. Never saw any info in the magazine.

Car Craft didn't tell us to keep anything secret but I still don't feel comfortable releasing information. I can tell you that I came in fouth out of six participants in the quarter mile running a 12.56 at 111.7mph.
They said they would have the results up on their website before the issue comes out. It will be in the Feb 06 issue.

There are posts on LS1 tech about the event.
Here is the post from the guy who had the Camaro.
I just got home from Norwalk raceway in OH. The 6 cars met there for 2 day of competition. We started off with a carshow that was judged on both fit/finish, and level of fabrication/planning of a results based package( a pile of high dollar parts was not a instant win). Then we moved onto a drag race. This is where I brought a knife to a gunfight. I finished 5th with the 6th place car broke on the line, but ran slower times than me in the past. I ran a 12.6 @ 112 N/A. There were 3 of us in the 12's 12.6 for me, 12.5 for the 68 camaro, and 12.3 for the 66 corvair. My N2O kit melted the feedline on a header tube before the dragracing started. 2nd in the dragrace was the totaly hand fabricated AMX witha winston cup level SBC 400 making well over 600 hp. He never had it to a track before and ran a 10.4 witha speed in the 130's with a 2.2 60 foot and no clue what he was doing( no helmet or rollbar!) The car has also gone over 200mph on public highways. Then the bigdog hit the track. A 90 mustang GT convert that makes well over 1300hp without the N2O. It runs a 347ci motor with A HUGE vortech making 28lbs of boost and a 175 hit of N2O. He left the line off idle on MT dragradials ( no boost built, or transbrake). He ran a 9.42 @148.8 mph (his personal best).
We then went onto a 60-0 braking test. I thought I had this won with all 3 of my runs coming in at 104 ft with only a few inches of variance. Then the AMX which has a C5 corvette brakes and C4 vette ABS system fabricated to work in the old car pulled off one 101ft stop. His others were in the 110 area, but they used your 1 best stop for the results. The other cars did not have ABS and were in the 130 ft area, with the 90 mustang having brake balance issues finally pulled in a 149 ft best stop.
The second day was to include a Autox that I was favored heavily to win, and a 100 mile ride and drive test. We woke to a rainy day and the owners of norwalk raceway would not let us run the autox. So we did the ride test 1st hoping for an end to the rain. The drive went on for 120 miles and 4 hours, until they gave up on clearing weather and dropped the autox.
At the awards it was no surprize when the AMX got the win, but I was shocked when I was announced with a 2nd place finish. The event will be the cover story for the Feb issue of carcraft with a ton of pics.

I've seen pix of that AMX many moons ago. Sounds like it has been further tweaked. Dare I say it? That AMX could very well be king of the pro-touring hill. It sux that they did not run the auto-x in the rain. I can;t see why not. But the AMX could have placed high in that category as well (Corvair #1 AMX #2?), so the outcome might have stayed the same. Oh well. I can't wait to see the Feb issue of Car Craft!

I saw that AMX like 10 years ago at some cruise night. It was amazing back then. Has to be one of the Pro Tour pioneers. Wish it had a AMC engine there but who am I to talk I have the same Chevy/Amc combo.
Probably one of the most technically advanced cars out there. If it was a Camaro it would be in every mag out there.
I think I have the old mag somewhere that it was in.

We were planning to run the auto-x in the rain, but the track wouldn't let us.(something about us spinning out and ruining their grass.) If we ran the auto-x in the dry it would have been a toss up between the AMX and the 99 Camaro, but in the rain the AMX would probably have not faired so well due to the fact that he only brought Et streets and auto-x tires with no thread and was scared to drive in the rain. (although he had no problems on the ride and drive in the rain with them) The Mustang would have come in last and the Corvair, Corvette, and my Camaro would have been close enough where driver skill would have been the biggest factor. The auto-x would have probably helped me the most as it would have almost definitely put me ahead of the Mustang. I can't wait for the issue to come out, as I still don't know what my final braking numbers were, or how all the cars were scored on ride and drive and craftsmanship.
What I don't understand is why they didn't get more entries. I didn't think I'd get in, but I sent in the application and got lucky, and had a great time.

Wow, that AMX is amazing. 2.2 60' while running 10's!
Getting that abs to work was a feat too.

I don't know why everyone was so focused on the drag strip competition. The quickest car at the drag strip is rarely the overall winner.

You're right, because the winner of the drag compitition came in third overall. But the only numbers we have are quarter mile and braking. if we had done the auto-x the numbers would have meant nothing to everyone except to compare between the six cars. Everyone can relate to the quater mile times.
The AMX was absolutely rediculous in the braking, it ended up pulling a 101 ft best but wasn't as consistent as the 99 camaro. He said that the abs doesn't need any calibration changes, but it doesn't like dissimilar size tires. the hardest part to installing it is the wheel speed sensors.
Also, he has traction control and the car has a six speed manual, he was having trouble warming up the tires. He needs to install some kind of defeat switch. brake stands were out of the question and dumping the clutch would cause the traction control to pull back on the trottle so hard the car would almost stall. he's also running a 2.75:1 rear and shifting at 7000 rpm so he is nowhere near the engines powerband for the first 60 ft.
