The shop building my DSE Mustang is doing all the prep and finish work for the massive amount of fabrication it took. I stopped over today they have everything ground, seam sealed etc and in primer. Now my car was originally concours restored and was all red oxide primer on the underside with the seams in black like the way Ford did it in the 60s

i had the intent to spray the bottom of the car in. Matte black using Spies Hecker Urethane. Non original but a clean look.

the other options are a raptor or lizard skin coating but for some reason im afraid to do this

whenever i see a car with undercoating or any type of texture to me as a collector seems there may be rust issues being covered up. Most high dollar builds do not seem to use that application and do matte paint or even gloss paint to match the body. Since my car has so much invested i did not want to hurt the resell factor down the road.

yes the car will be driven but even with the red oxide primer it still looks awesome underneath so im confident the matte black should as well if i choose

What can you guys suggest as many of you have already tackled this on your builds

I covered the bottom of my 68 stang in Lizard skin. I have lots of pics that clearly show the condition of the undercarriage in the advent it should ever be sold, and there are identifying factors to show it is the same undercarriage. I feel the benefits of the lizard skin outweighed the original look, and it really does look clean.

I did Raptor. Dig it.

I do understand the 'cover up' concern. If you intend to drive it, take a pic before you spray it on.

Can you guys throw up some photos in this thread. Saw bunch videos it seems the raptor is easier to apply than the lizard. I was thinking of still having all the brackets matte black then have the shop mask around them for one of these coatings

I will hopefully be at a similar point really soon and as an option where you plan on actually driving the car on a regular basis the lizard skin or truck bed coating (hypo liner or WHY) seems to be the best option. I also was considering painting it but it will just chip off and I don't want the heavy undercoat back on. The liner coating looks clean, stands up and most of the guys use it for good reason.

Please do post some pics on which ever you decide.

What product did you use here and is this out of the can or did you tint it with paint? Also did you cover everything including suspension brackets etc? Did you use the standard applicator gun or the one with adj nozzle? Looks good overall

Did you tint this or this is out of the bottles? Are you planning to paint over it in white to match your car? Looks good i think i would like my shop to make the texture just a bit finer but its all up to the applicator and gun i heard. Did you coat all suspension brackets down below?

The car was in primer in those pics, pic below is my car painted. It does come where you can tint it but I bought my raptor straight black, You can thin it to your liking and I sprayed brackets and everything. I also sprayed the interior floorboard/firewall.

If you ever think you may need to do fab work later I would stick with paint, bedliner is a pita to remove later when you want a clean surface to weld on.
