View Full Version : Black coating on Wilwood brakes, do you have to strip it off?

A buddy of mine recently purchased black Wilwood 14inch rotors and 6 piston calipers for his 68 Camaro.
Now we are discussing if he needs to take the black coating off or if it goes off after using the brakes?
I guess the pads will full with paint if you do not take it off your self?
I know I can ask Wilwood but I thought to post it on the forum first.
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that the EDP coating will be gone from the face of the rotors after your first drive around the block.... I'm in the same situation and that's my assumption. I suspect that it will be a case of needing to clean off your wheels more than worrying about the pads.... I'm HOPING that it is going to look kind of cool with the black coating in the slots and cross-drilling once the faces are silver but I'm just not sure....

That's what I did, and it seems to have worked out ok...

Its in the instructions. Check out the break in procedure. It will come off during the pad bedding process.

Yes it’s in the instructions under the brake bedding procedure. It is not a paint it is a coating; not unlike zinc coated rotors the finish will come off as soon as the brakes are bedded. This is a common question thanks for posting it up on pro-touring.

As was stated by ^^^^ it is a coating not a paint and will wear off when you bed the brakes.
