View Full Version : Rear Brake configuration using LS1 setup, and a Ford 9

I have a question about a setup I'm considering. I was originally going to go all C5 on my 67 Firebird (still might). If it was not for wheel choices, I would go c5 for sure. Here's my situation:

I'm still considering using the Year One RallyII wheel (17") and I guess the C5 setup will not clear. I also have a Ford 9" for the rear.

For the Front, pretty straightforward - Use LS1 brakes. I've read that the C5 Caliper can be used here, is that true? I already have the calipers, so I'm thinking get the LS1 adapter brackets and use the LS1 rotor with the C5 calipers and abutements. Good?

For the rear, use the Kore 3 setup for the Ford 9", but substitute LS1 rear calipers and rotors. This will simplify the parking brake setup (I think??) and allow me to stay consistent to the LS1 route.

As for master cylinder/booster - stock C5? stock LS setup? Open to suggestions on this.

So, is there any reason why this would not work? Am I missing something?

Thanks

I guess I should add that I'll be narrowing my 9", so I can use new ends. I think Moser makes new ends, but I'm not sure which set I would need to fit the 9" and the LS1 backing plate.

You're ok on the front - the C5 caliper swaps onto the LS abutment. Use pads that are made for the abutment - so use LS pads.

Can't be much help on the rear because of the Ford rear. I know that the C5 and LS rear calipers will interchange, but i believe the rotors will not due to different hat dimensions. If you can get LS backing plates/abutments/rotors on there then you can swap the calipers out for C5, but I see no real benefit to that other than that the C5 caliper is pressure cast and the LS isn't.

Cool, Thanks. So is the LS rear setup a direct bolt on for a 10 bolt? If I can get the ends I was talking about, it should bolt on to my rear.

Moser has the GM ends - that's what I put on mine. I went with S-10 rotors/calipers on my Nova for two reasons. The calipers don't protrude as much inboard (for clearance to frame) and the e-brake bracket is integral to the backing plate - no fabbing. I had both the LS1 brakes and the S-10 brakes mocked up before deciding on the S-10. The S-10 brakes are 1/2" less in diameter but I didn't consider that an issue for me.

So is it just close or will it be a problem? From what I've read the LS1 setup is very similar to the C5, is there a clearance issue with that setup?

Also, what year S10's would I be on the lookout for?

Thanks

The width of the calipers were a problem for me because the rearend turned out to be 1" narrower per side than it should have been - quite a bit of difference between the two. My S-10 brakes are 2000-01 S10 Blazer 2WD brakes - I'm sure others will work:

Awesome, thanks for the pictures and info. That gives me another option to look at. What are you running for front brakes?

I think they are GM intermediates - came with front clip

Another nice thing about the S-10 brakes is that the e-brake cable bracket is "built-in" to the backing plate.

I did a write-up a few years back on TC for a rear LS swap to a first gen Camaro - there might be something useful in it for you if you get the GM ends for your niner. http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=161383
