View Full Version : Are 20 inch wheels considered more street rod than G Machine?

Been thinking of new wheels in 20 and to be frank most exotic supercars now run 20 or 21 out back.

i know a majority of guys are 18 biased while some run a 19 rear and 18 front which is what I did last time around. I just wouldnt want my car looking goofy with 20s, i think the stance and wheel choice will dictate how sweet this can be. I want max performance and also max visual.

In my opinion, it all comes down to the proportions and size of the vehicle. For instance, 19s and 20s look a bit crowded on a 67-68 Camaro or a 68-72 Nova but that same size combo looks incredible on 66-72 A-Bodies which is basically the same parameters used by the O.E.s when picking the wheel size so if you have a big car that can swallow a 20 up, I say do it.

Jason it is a 70 Mustang Fastback, what are your thoughts since you are an acclaimed designer?

As Jason said above, has to do a lot with Proportions, fenderwell size, etc. Look how good aftermarket 22's look on a 5th gen camaro. But put the 5th gen next to a 1st gen and the 5th gen dwarfs the 1st gen. 18/19 on a '67'-68 seem like the limit to me. A '69 with the broader fenders seem to be able to do a 19/20 combo if tucked in properly. Of coarse the big A bodies soak up the larger wheels a lot better. Most of the time they just need to be properly tucked. If not you end up with a "donk" look.

Keep in mind the newer exotics where designed with 21"-22" wheels in mind. 1st gen camaro's, for example, oviously were not.

However IMO, with the '70 Mustang I think a 19"/20" combo would fit nicely! The Ringbrothers Mustang sat awsome with those sizes.

Yeah i cant decide but 19 all around might be different with the right stance or i may stick with the 19/18 i had prior. the Ring Brothers Dragon actually had 19X12 and 18X10 as I got this info from the owner of the car last year. That is why i chose the same rim design but i could got as aggressive on the width since my car last year wasnt as modified as it is now.

I'm running 20's front and rear on a 1974 Dart and I personally love the look, However, it's taking a ton of fab work to get the stance right on 20's

These are my mock up wheels but this is ride height with a 20x8.5 up front and a 20x10 rear https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/02/IMAG02851-1.jpg

Thanks for that! I agree, a 69-70 Mustang definitely has the proportions to handle a 19/20 combo but I could also see an 18/19 and even a 19/19 combo because of the evenness of the wheelwells front to rear. If I were building one today or designing it for a client, I would most likely call out a 19/19 combo and stagger the diameter very slightly with the tire sidewalls.

Jason i did some google image searching and found quite a few 69/70 using a 20 inch rear wheel, first off all the cars i found i disliked all of the wheel choices and the stance on all of them sucked but after seeing this i am leaning toward a 19 all around and i hope to tuck the stance just right with the JRI coilovers. I think the Ring Brothers got the Dragon car perfect but i want to try something different rather than copying what they did which is easy.

Foose did a car on Overhaulin and there were two others in Modified Mustang Magazine last year with 20 rear wheels. I wasnt feeling them at all.

Very cool. Looks like your homework will pay off. Looking forward to seeing the end result!

My question would be which wheels perform better?

I realize that it does depend on the horsepower available at the wheels, but there are diminishing returns when wheels become larger and exhibit more rotational inertia.

Has anyone found larger wheels did not perform as well as more modest 17" or 18" wheels?

I will say from my experiences as i use to race many years ago that 18 inch seem to be the best all around size for a number of reasons, unsprung weight and unlimited tire choices. Now my daily driver is a 700hp CTSV and it has 19 inch wheels that are very light and the car performs amazing in any form. Since it is winter i have installed 18 inch wheels on the car and do notice that the car does stop much shorter with the 18 inch wheels and tires and the steering seems a little quicker in regards to reaction

see my current pro touring build i doubt i will ever want to trash it at a race track or autocross so with all things being equal whatever rim size i choose honestly should make no difference for my usage. My car has a 600_hp engine already. I just wanted to maximize the aesthetics as much as possible without looking awkward. I have to say the Ring Brothers Diversion and Dragon are two of my favorite cars they built and both of those cars run 19/18 combo. the stance has alot to do with it. I just hope i can get the stance I desire with the new Detroit Speed Mustang gear my shop is installing for me. When I had AIr ride the stance of my car was so sweet but i just was not happy with the ride quality

The 70+ Camaro look awesome with 20/19 combo as the wheel arches seem much wider than the 69/70 Mustangs. Does anyone know how much wider a 70 Camaro is versus a 70 Mustang Fastback?
