so im reassembling a 68 firebird 400 that i didnt take apart. car is mostly resto. previous owner/builder had almost completed the front end. found it was missing the pitman arm, shocks, some washers, etc. he used all stock stuff, near as i can tell. 69 up spindles/discs, power steering.
questions:
the subframe has been out. is there a process for squaring it? isit possible tpo reinstall it out of square? how do i check?

front coils seem to be too small, with too many coils. this is purely by eyeball. how many coils should it have? what OD should they be? reason im questioning is that when i went to install the front shocks, they hit the inner side of the coils well before lining up with the holes in the LCA. got to looking, and they just dont look right.

thats all i can think of for front end, at the moment. after i know how far ill have to dig, ill know how much i have to do to get this thing right.

Copied this from another site

There are alignment holes called "Master Gauge Holes" in the number 1 body mount bracket that is welded to the subframe. There are corresponding holes in the body itself directly above the holes in the bracket. Find a rod or bolt or drill bit that fits snugly into these holes and as you are lining things up put the rod into the holes as guides. This will get you close, but not spot-on. Leave the bolts loose and use the drawing that Buck posted to measure diagonally from the various reference points. Especially E and F. Move it around until you get the measurements as close as you possibly can, then tighten the bolts up. Then re-check it. Then check it again. Torque specs are 75-95 ft. lbs. on the body bolts and 30-40 ft. lbs at the radiator support.
Don't forget to take the bolts or rod or whatever you used in the alignment holes back out when you are done.

Chances are those are not original coil springs. I'm not sure about factory springs as far as, the number of coils and OD.

But this is a great read on first gen Camaro suspensions..... http://www.pozziracing.com/first_gen_suspension.htm

Very informative.
