Looks cool, but I'm pretty sure that in Texas at least a historic plate must be an original plate, reproductiuons are not allowed on your car, but I guess if you wanted something to hang on your wall.

In TX they have to be authentic, but I wonder if the ladies working the counter can tell the difference if they look the same?
Better idea, if you have some authentic ones that are kind of weathered, get those registered to your car and make some of these new ones with the exact same numbers on them. These should look newer :D

I've got my original Black & Yellows from California who restores these? or does anyone know what paint they used and where I can get it?

Definitely. The one I dealt with for my 69 plates complained about having to do it - apparently the old plates emit an odor that lingers after the plates are back in the plastic bag. I'd hate to try to come up with NOS or reproduction old-plate-smell.

70 bucks is too high..i bought some original 68 texas plates on ebay for 40 bucks..they were still in the original 1968 huntsville prison rodeo paper wrapping...

Now.. my 69 truck plates were only 30 bucks, and still had the prison rodeo paper between them.. but being on the car for the past 5 years, and being out in the elements, they're not holding up all that well.
Even if you come up with originals that are in new condition and have them approved, you've still got to have them rechecked every seven years. I'm still two years out from having to go through the recheck process but I wonder if they're as picky when you renew - if I replaced my plates with exact reproductions or stripped and recolored them, would that be acceptable?
