Been giving this some though and after speaking with a couple people. It's time to ditch the 289. I've got a 66 mustang coupe and I'm wanting to pull as close to 500hp as possible. What would be the best, easiest and cheapest way of hitting that goal?

I understand stock 302 blocks don't like more than about 400hp- they saw themselves in half. Might want to start with a 351 or aftermarket block if you want a 302 based 500hp.
Or there's always an LS...

Ford Coyote Motor - search the salvage yards for a wrecked 2010+ mustang with the 5.0 in it...

Remove Ford, install Chevy.....easy!
Ford Coyote Motor - search the salvage yards for a wrecked 2010+ mustang with the 5.0 in it...
2011 was the first year for the new 5.0
I would second the 347 suggestion. The taller deck height on a 351 makes it easier to make power but complicates other things....mostly headers. If the shock towers are gone or will be gone then its a different story.

not sure how easy they are to get... but my buddy had a 2003 cobra... holy hell that car had balls.... see if you can get you r hands on one of those supercharged Mod motors...

I have a 289 that was Stroked to 331 after i had the Solid roller cam spec'd to the 289. So probably not optimum.
Canfield Aluminum heads. And I'm just at 440HP/TQ at the crank. No issues of the block cutting itself in half. Ran up to and over 6K as often as I can get away with.
Oh, and the Stock WC T5 hasn't grenaded yet either.

Build a bored/storked Clevor... Cleveland headed Windsor. Plenty good on power & a darn strong bottom end, too...

Thanks for all the advice guys. I just made a couple phone calls and a buddy of mine found an LS1 for not a bad price so I think thats the route I'm going to look into going. It's going to be awhile before I need the engine in the car so I'll have some time to add some hp to the block

That LS will be much more expensive than just stroking your current engine and making good power. It'll all still fits. After that go with a stroked Windsor.
But please stay Ford :-)

Heck Yates designed the darn LS the LS heads will "fit" on a 302 so give it a rest about staying Ford.
So two choices to run hard and make bigger power. Look around for aftermarket block 347, new or used. add some good heads like TFS or AFR, then add a couple of GT2871 turbos, no need for expensive ones ,ebay ones are working fine for lots of people and let you dial things in tHEN invest in "name brand" units. Either look over on theturboforums.com about the crutch carbs or look at Megasquirt.
I am building a 283, all forged rotating assembly 040 over, old school big valve double humps cause I have them unless I sell them and look for some L98 aluminum heads. LT1 FI intake, OBX forward facing turbo headers, turbo smart for bov and waste gate. I will use my DIS idea, kind of working out a cam sensor too.
Only thing more expensive than building Ford is building Mopar.
For what several of my friends and customers have in blue oval and pentastar I can build complete cars.
Reinforced 3902 blocks hold 500 hp for limited time only. 351w can handle little more and not sweat too hard but cant squeeze it too hard.
