I am contemplating installing a LS3 in my 69 camaro. As anybody would know that has looked into this. There are a bunch of different options. My question is how many HP is good enough in these engines for my car. It seems you can get up to 525 HP as a crate motor from GMPP for a attractive price. Once above 525 HP you should look at a aftermarket engine with forged everything. Obviously the prices rise accordingly. My question is 525 HP enough for a 69 Camaro for everyday Pro touring car that you can bring to the track and have fun on occasion. Also which tranny is a stout reliable tranny? seems like the 4L70E is popular. Is it reliable? Can it handle 525 HP? Is a six speed really needed?

I think 525 is perfect. My LS1 is putting 406 to the wheels. Its mini tubbed w/335 tires. Its spins them pretty easily from roll in 2nd gear. I dont have super sticky tires, but at some point traction becomes an issue. A well tuned suspension will help with that, but for how you describe you'll be using the car I think you'll be happy with 525- probably 450ish to the tires. I have no knowledge on the 4L70, as I have never run one. Down the road if you felt like you needed a bit more, you could do a cam swap & pick up a few more HP. I am not familiar with the cam specs on that motor, just speculating. If you are talking open track- like full road course, that may alter your decision a bit. Keep us posted on your progress.

How much is enough? That statement is not in my vocabulary. Lol..one can never have too much.

I look more toward power to weight ratio. 525hp is nice in a 3000lbs car and would be very reliable with the GMPP.

Manual trans is my preference for track days.

Looks like the factory rating on the L470E is 450hp, but everything is upgradable. DOH!
