View Full Version : 2nd gen f body z28 rear brake hose

Looking for a braided steel rear brake hose that would fit my 1979 z28 with the factory 10 bolt rear axle. I was able to find oem and stainless hoses for 76-81 non z28, but i was wondering if these wouldnt fit or something. The picture also looked as though the braided one had a banjo bolt style attachment rather than a distribution block to split to driver/passenger side. I don't know if it makes a difference for this hose that I'm going to be running wilwood 4 piston rear brake package instead of drums. Thanks!

Shouldn't make a difference if you have a Z28 or not. The rear brakes were the same for all the sec gen camaros with a 10 bolt. The only difference is the years for the design of the steel lines. The later years split at the axle tube and the earlier years split on the differential housing. Look at the pic below. If you have that bracket next to the pumpkin, you need the later style.

What is the brand and part number of the one you are looking at? i don't think that is a banjo fitting, I think you are looking at the fastener hole.

The late 2nd gen Z28s did have different hoses than the the regular cars. The hose is attached to a bracket that is then bolted to the bracket on the rear axle. GM did this to move the hose over to clear the exhaust on the Z28. There is a picture here (TA shown but same idea) http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109179&highlight=z28+rear+brake+hose You may be able to use the non-Z hose since you are going with 4 wheel discs, especially if you are changing the hard lines on the axle.

Reason I ask is because from my observations, ALL the later second gens have the rubber hose that goes from the frame to the axle tube. It wasn't a Z28 only feature. Now the hose length possibly could have varied due to suspension height, but I have bought these hoses before and never stumbled upon any issues. Currently I have TA disc brakes on the rear. I'm using the hose below plus the correct steel lines for WS6 disc from a Trans Am.

yes, there are different rear hose #s due to exhaust differences.

Call tobin or maybe call directly to inline or classic tube.

The TAs only had a different hose with the extra bracket for the 79-81 rear disc cars. It only moves it over an inch or so and I've had no trouble using the same length hose on either. Russel makes one in a set with front hoses SS. Earl's has a brass fitting with teh bolt hole if you want to make your own and use an AN fitting. Done it both ways.

I know earlier second gens used a bracket off one of the rear cover bolts to hold the hose and the hard line came up more in the center tunnel area.

While all the late second gens did have the bracket on the axle tube, the Z28 had an additional bracket that bolted to the bracket on the axle tube. This moved the hose over to clear the Z28 exhaust, EDIT: see Skips post below for TA hoses, thanks Skip for the info.

Randy the TAs that had a crossover muffler(base 180 HP motor) definitely did not have the bracket-I'm an original owner and mine never had it til I swapped in a 81 4WD rear that had it. The 220 HP TA 6.6 with the dual resonators may have in 78, I'll dig out the shop manual-but then it says 78 front rotors used the new bearing(even has a picture 77 vs 78 swapping) vs 79 for what everyone else says.
