My firebird has a mild 406 with turn downs. My neighbor complanes when I fire it up and drive away every Saturday morning.
Will I hear a big decrease if I install tail pipes dumped out just behind the rear tires?

What mufflers are you running? It will cost a bit but I would put a set of big "quietish" mufflers on it with a set of tailpipes and then put some electric cutouts in front of the mufflers... Then you have the best of both worlds. Nice and quiet when the need arises and loud and brutal when it "doesn't"... A friend of mine as a blown '05 Mustang and an '04 CTS-V. both have stock, quiet exhausts but, with the cutouts OMG! The caddy turns into a raucus monster with that unmuffled LS2!. I will be doing this same style exhaust on the van.

I spent a lot of time and $$ on a full custom SS exhaust with magnaflow mufflers. I would hate to have to cut it all up and redo it.

I've got a neighbor that hates my car too, runs down to my house when i fire up my chevelle. I told him if he didn't like it I'd buy my teenager a drum set

Get some goats for pets. They will give your neighbor a whole new appreciation for your car!

If you are just letting it go after the mufflers you will quiet it down a lot with every inch of tubing you add. You can also put in a 3" to 2.5 inch taper reducer(assuming you have 3 inch mufflers) and size the tube down and that will help your scavenging of the cylinders by keeping the velocity up where you need it and it will be way quieter.

I don't understand how a "lot of time and $$" goes together with "turn downs"? Are you saying you've got a lot of time and money in your exhaust system and you don't have tailpipes?
Just trying to follow along... I have been drinking tonight. :)

This is a funny story. I bought enough SS pipe and bends to fab a full exhaust. We got tied up with a died line for a photo shoot and had to stop with turn downs. Now a year later, I'm tired of the turn downs and want to finish the tail pipes but I put all the extra pipe and bends in the "free for all scrap box" and it was used on another car so now I have to buy it again. But ya the first part of the exhaust did take some time and money being it wasn't a pre fab bolt in exhaust.

Tailpipes will give an average reduction of about 3dB. Or at least that's what I've been told.

who cares what your neighbor thinks...it's your car, your toy...your passion. If you aren't breaking any laws...tell him to "F" off
