I hope there is enough room for yet another 2nd gen F-body. :thankyou:

I am still waiting for my PHS documentation but in short; My dad picked this sweet ride up around early 1981 or 82' after watching ThunderBolt and Lightfoot.
Had to have a white 73' TA just like the one that Jeff Bridges stole off the car lot in the beginning of the movie.

After a clean up and a custom paint job she was on the road.
Due to work and life and us dang kids, the white bird had to sit.
In between storage, the garage and out on the driveway, she sat for a few years. From time to time she would whisper to me to come and load her up and get her going again. Being too young at the time, all I could do was make plans for the future. Finally the day came where I told my dad I was coming to haul the old girl off and get her back on the street where she belonged.
Freshly married as I was, I had a very tight budget to work with. Being a professional mechanic at a car lot worked in my favor for this deal.
1st things 1st. Yank out that boat anchor of an engine and lets get this show on the road.
I had a friend with some late 70's Pontiac car. That was the first engine I dropped in her. Just a 301 with a 2bbl. Hey now!!! No hating. That was just for getting her back on the road. :hammer:

Stay tuned and to hear more about the NOW engine with the cryogenics and 461 stroker and all that jazz.

Then:

Flat cam engine and useful block I pulled from a 1970 Cat. Poor girl gave her life for this project.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/12/1979Formula_zps37d900ac-1.jpg

My 1st Bird that got me started was this sweet 79' Formula. 301, 4speed, red guts. I had the snowflakes polished and just drove her. Total resto when I picked her up.
Having my connections in the Auto industry was a good thing.
But of course, as all good things end, I had to sell the old gal to get the family something more familyish.
If you look closely you can see the top of the White 73' in the background. Love it!

As previously stated; my dad picked this sweet bird up somewhere around 81' or 82'.
Front end had been waked on the left side and sometime in the early stages of her life somebody dropped in some Bad A$$ 427 BBC. Very early in her life.
Him and his buddies got too work installing a new front clip and a 400 with auto out of a late 70's bird. She started her life as a 455 4speed then went to a 427 4speed. Then 400 Auto. Then 301 auto. Then....... Yeah, she has had a rough life so far.

The fine folks that wrecked her took the wheels and 427 4speed and dropped the rest off at some local F-body yard to be sold for parts. Too long ago for me to remember who but I think I still have the guys biz card somewhere. Hummmmmmm.....

So. Car is done and on the road. 1982. 1st pic of my dad and the love of his life. :)

NOW:
I started with just wanting to put some good pistons in the block and balance the rotating assembly and then freshen up the rest. Not too big of a job right?
HA!!! So now the 70' 400 is a wicked stroked and Yoked 461 Butler with Ross pistons. I opted for the Ceramic top coat and Teflon skirts.
A local guy here in Boise runs his own Cryogenics biz and we have been treating parts here and there. First thing in was the rods. More to come there.

As with all custom engine mods; one thing leads to another. Mega brace, 4 bolt Billet main caps, very very exotic solid roller cam developed by the big dogs at Butler's and built by CompCams.

Picture time!!!

So I read this other thread about a guy who re-welded his whole Sub-frame to better the structural integrity. Sounded like a good idea at the time.
That's a lot of grinding and even more welding wire. But I feel better about it now.

At first glance it looks like cancer. But it's not!!
What it turned out to be was;
For some reason, that may or may not involve drug trafficking; there was something welded on to the upper mount of the sway bar link, then cut off. Then some other brackets were welded on and...... yeah. Some people should not weld or cut, or work on my future cars. :)
Here is some more ugly.

Hurts I know but a race car builder friend of mine is going to help me repair this crap and put in new rails and we may add a bit more sexy back in her. Since my focus is road race / Auto-X and maybe a little bit of driving the neighbors crazy, well I am pretty sure she will come out of this surgery better then before.

Next thing is I guess I need to be pointed in the right direction as too what is the best leaf spring mounts.
I have bran new springs from BellTech. Sorry Hotchkis but this is what was available when I was spending money.
I am looking into the spherical front and Delrin rear and blah blah blah. It looks like everyone has a different opinion but Hotchkis does have that new kit out as well as Global West.

Until next time kids.

Sometime in mid January we will be rolling her into the shop for new rear frame rails, custom sub-frame connectors and a roll cage.
I really only questioned the Engine once.
"Should we go with a LSx or keep it Pontiac?"
I called Butler and they set me up with the stroker kit and a few more goodies to go along with it.

Thanks for checking it out.

Geno

My '73 Esprit didn't come with rear sway bar mounts, so I had the frame rails reinforced with a saddle mount to use the later 2nd Gen mounts. There are nuts welded to the backside of the saddle and holes drilled in the frame rail to recess them. The entire saddle is TIG welded to the frame rails. If I pull the mount loose, I've ripped the frame rails out.

That reinforcement looks nice. I haven't looked to see if my 74 needs that. It was a pretty plane jane car from the factory. BTW, in regards to Pontiac power, does going with an LS3 count? I could say it came out of a Pontiac G8 GXP.

Kencar- nice work on the rear subframe rails. I had a welder install some 3/16" plate over the spot where the link mounts attach to the subframe rails back in the 90's- so far it's held up to 20+ years of aggressive driving. We'll see how it holds up to 18's and 40 series rubber, and my 455 w/ ported e-heads going in this spring.

I'm not 100% positive, but your '74 may have the holes already pinched in the frame rail to use the later mounts like I'll be using. I bought the complete sway bar setup off a '74 to put on my '81 Esprit and it had the later mounts. My '75 Esprit had the later style mounting brackets on it.

My buildup is similar to Tony's (IronDougal), except mine began life as an Esprit. I had the welds on the subframe reworked, installed Hotchkis lowering springs, GW Del-A-Lum bushings, B-body spindles & 12" 1LE rotors, rebuilt 12.7:1 ratio Steering Box, Aluminum Body Bushings, etc.
Not to hijack Tony's story, but photos of mine can be seen at: http://s261.beta.photobucket.com/user/kencar62/library/Facebook/1973%20Firebird

Good morning fellow Pro-Tourers.
Not much going on here with the old 73' cept' some reserch.
I did order a set of leaf spring shakels and such.

http://www.globalwestperformance.com/1970-81-firebird-shackle-kit-del-a-lum-multi-leaf-springs.html

Does anybody know the difference between globalwest.net and globalwestperformance.com ????? Im confused. The prices are better at globalwestperformance but it's all the same stuff.

I think I said before that I have BellTech springs. They come with this ruber crap mounts which are going going gone!!!!! The Delrin should work out quite nicely.

Later today I will figure out when she will go under the knife for the sub-frame connectors and roll cage. Very excited about this. And since I am lucky enuff NOT to have any rust, when this stuff gets done I can get the fron clip back on and slide in the sweet 461 stroker. YES. I am really keeping a REAL Pontiac engine. No LSx in my baby. :)

I will be doing a brake upgrade to a Corvette set. Nothing to crazy like Bear or Willwood. Maybe some day.

I am also building my own fuel cell with rear air diffuser as well as a front aluminium air dam extintion.

Thanks again Ken for all your help..

It appears that Global West Performance is a retail outlet for GW parts, as well as other brands. Global West Suspension is the R&D, Manufacturing and Sales group for Global West developed performance parts only. Their addresses are both in San Bernardino Ca., but the street addresses are different.

Hey Leigh,
Thank you again for checking out my thread. Looking at your bird makes me so much more motivated to get mine going. :)
Butler performance has two different valley pans in this style. One is straight up billet aluminium and the other one is baffeled with PCV system.
Thats the one I am getting.

Toby,
Looks like the making of a very nice big-bore Poncho build- LS engines are nice but not required to go fast in a Firebird. Judging by your parts list I see you're going for max power- I would forget about running ported iron heads and going with a set of ported aluminum heads if your budget can afford it. I have yet to see any iron-head 455 or 461 stroker make over 500-510 hp, even with a solid roller and extensive porting. I was at the same point last year when choosing heads for my 455, and even had 6x-4 and 6x-8 to choose from, but chose ported aluminum heads for the greater power potential.

I ended up going with 87cc Edelbrock round ports CNC ported to 325 cfm by SD Performance. I looked at Roland CV-1's and KRE high ports, but I chose the e-heads because they were a proven design and could still make 600 hp with a 4.21/4.25 stroke engine. The CV-1's have made more hp, but any build I've seen seems to need more stroke and 4.5" stroke is marginal in a stock block. KRE high ports were another option, but I passed on those because Ken Brewer at PPR told me they won't fit under the hood of a 2nd gen Firebird (I think it's an issue with the Northwind intake needed to make the high ports deliver big numbers).

SD Performance recommended their "Old Faithful" roller cam to me, since I'll be running a TH-400 for now, but I'm going to run a PPR TC-02 HF (284/292 adv.dur.,236/[email protected],.510"/.505",112 LSA) until I can afford the 5-speed and 9" rear needed for a 600 hp drivetrain. Ken also told me that this cam makes a sold 520 hp with stock e-heads, so it's safe to say I'll be doing a little better. No need for more power until I can swap out the 10-bolt.

Geno

Hey Geno,
I'am pickin up what your putting down. :)
I feel the same way about the heads.
My main concern is throwing all the money at the bottom end right now. Since I already have the heads and exhaust and intake set, I will probably run that for this coming season unless something happens where an extra 10 grand lands in my account. $$$$$ HA!! A head swap will be easy come next off season.

I have done much research about what is the "Perfect" head, and it's kinda like every other speed part out there. Everybody has a different opinion.
But heads is where the power is. I do how ever plan on changing over to the round port heads but I am not sure if edelbrock is what I am looking for.
Your set up looks and sounds amazing. I will focus my next buy on the clutch and then brake upgrade. Like I said, heads can wait.

Thanks again for all your input. It's good to have some experience about.

Alright sports fans!! Just a little update for those who care. :)

Today I recieved a care package from the fine folks at GW-Performance. Yes, thank you very much for that.
I also made the last payment to Butler Performance. Cam and lifters and other such yummy goodies.

I will post the pics as soon as I get the goods.

Toby,
Looks like the making of a very nice big-bore Poncho build- LS engines are nice but not required to go fast in a Firebird. ... until I can afford the 5-speed and 9" rear needed for a 600 hp drivetrain. Ken also told me that this cam makes a sold 520 hp with stock e-heads, so it's safe to say I'll be doing a little better. No need for more power until I can swap out the 10-bolt.

Geno

Toby, Just want to say that you are doing a great job and that Poncho will be a beast!

Now, Geno just so it's clear. You don't want to put a modern GM motor in your car but you are ok with a FORD rear end??? haha, ok I am done thread hijacking.

Thanks bro. I think my build will stay ALL Pontiac. Not that I don't love the LSx style. I work on them all the time at my other job and think they are great. There is just something about a stock pobtiac block smashing out 600 pounds of torque. I think I am going to have to up-grade my tire budget just a little bit. :)

Long awaited update!!!!

We have been very slow lately. But progress is happening.
I will have engine pics on Monday and throw some body updates soon too.
The body guy is going to come by Sunday to have a look. Nose and lower valance will be ordered too.

No Pictures yet. I am however picking up the engine this coming Monday and will be assembling it throughout the week. Then I will be adding pics while the progress is happening.
The machine work killed my budget so I had to sell my race bike to fund the rest of this build. Priorities right?
A slew of goodies are in transit to finish off the engine from the guys at Butler Performance. Hopefully be here by Monday as well.

Spent the weekend putting the bottom end together. Lots of pictures; which is what we love right? I know I do.
All "Go Fast" parts were bought from the fine guys at Butler Performance. Truthfully I don't think I would go anywhere else.
Machine work done by a local shop. Boise Cylinder Head. In Boise we have one of the best Pontiac guys around, and since the do all of his work I figured they should do mine too.

Enuff of the text, let's got on to the pics.

Here is a table of goodies.

If I may point out some things to check? The threaded plugs in the front of the block are way to deep blocking a oil passage. If youi remove them there are passages a little more than 1/2 inch in that go to the front main. From my experiance you,res are to deep. The only other thing I will suggest is pontiac race pistons have intake and exhaust reliefs that are different sized and must be installed to match head. And the cv-1 heads require different pistons. Otherwise great build and car. Rod Cole

Thanks for the info Rod. I am not going with the CV-1 heads. But have you seen the new RA-V heads that have been reproduced? Very nice.
As far as the front oil passage you are speaking of: Do you mean the one that does not have a plug in it? Or the two that already have plugs in them? What is the "Fix" that you have found?

Thanks again.

The two in the front that are already installed. If you look at the front main in youre pics the other holes that intersect at the holes you see. They originate from the oil galleys you threaded and used pipe plugs in. They had cup plugs staked in originally. When you convert to pipe plugs they cannot be deeper than the cup plugs. You could try a non allen type brass plug and shorten it to .430 or less. possible oversize pipe plugs or a die and make youre own pipe plugs. Either way the engine will destruct if left in its current state. If you want a visual pull the plugs and crank and stick a wire down the angled drillings at the front main.

Be sure and check it you're self. The machine shop does not do pontiacs often or it would not be like that. The reason for doing it is some feel the cup plugs could blow out causing loss of all oil pressure. Jim Hands book High performance pontiac has pics and probably the Rocky Rotella book does. Properly installed there will be two to three threads of the plug above the surface of the block. When playing with pontiacs you are the only one local that will know how they work by educating you're self. I have a 10.65 second pontiac tempest so I got to learn that a long time ago. Good luck. The interesting thing is Rod, this machine shop specializes in Pontiac. My city's number one Pontiac guy has this shop build all of his race engines.

Where abouts are you located at Rod? Who does your work?

I am in oklahoma. Several different people do my machine work the way I tell them to. To understand it the thickness of the front of the block is all there is . pontiac drilled a 5/16 hole down the middle of the 1 or so inch thick block, which you can see the three different drillings in the pic of the front main, connecting the driver and pass side oil galley from the front main and put well plugs in the end of the main oil galleys so if you're plugs are bellow deck and approx .550 or more thick then the oil passage is plugged. Resulting in a cooked front main and no oil to the passenger side lifters.

Back at it with more goodies and a little more time.
I've been busy with some other projects. A 67' Corvette here, and a 1950 Chevy pu there. I have been acquiring parts along the way.

I have always loved the L88 Vette set up so I have decided to have my air cleaner resemble that.

A couple of parts from the brown Santa.
Axles. Clutch stuff. And a fuel pump with harness. Still waiting on the Holley regulator.

For now they are the cast 85 cc combustion chambers and flow 260 CFM out of the box. Not for long.
I dropped them off at Wes King's head shop for a little re-work. 2.13 intake valves and something around the 320 to 340 CFM area. Then I will have them resurfaced to get the chambers to 82 or 83 cc. 12:1 compression don't scare me.

And so I sleep better and know my feet will be safe I bit off this Lakewood bellhousing.

Pontiac is so dang expensive. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Here is one of the things Wes King does in-between building Top Fuel dragster heads.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/02/20150202_125327_zpsa6xuzgcv-1.jpg (http://s1295.photobucket.com/user/IronDougal/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150202_125327_zpsa6xuzgcv.jpg.html)

That's a McLaren fuel injection and a wicked big block chevy head.

I also have a new set of front spindles from CPP that will bolt on C6 Corvette brakes with no cutting. 2" drop as well. So I bought a set of Z51 brakes and hubs from a 2006 Vette. In the process of rebuilding those. The only down side is now I need to up-size my wheels. NEXT!!

I will get the images of the brakes up as soon as I can.

Thanks John.
I'm sure excited about it. Those heads were hard to bite off, but I just had too. I am planning on having a "Put together" party in March over spring break. It will be a good time.

This weekend I will be installing the engine and trans to see what my ride height will be. Then swapping out the spindles and brakes. If time allows I will do the rear axles and leaf springs with the delAlum bushings. Going to be a busy weekend.

And there she sits in the bad weather. Poor girl.

Ok kids; I am hoping for the heads to be on and my wheels to be here by next time. Then I can add my calipers to the brake system.
Heads and intake, then a final Cam degree check plus the pushrod check. Gotta get custom pushrods.

Have a good night in car land.

Got the call today that my new wheels and tires are in. American Racing CL205 18" x 10" Rear and `8" x 9" front. I will pick them up this weekend and do the first test fit.

Here is a link to the wheels.

My tire guy called and gave me my early birthday present. Daddy got some new shoes!!!!! :yum:

After all the searching and researching I keep going back to American Racing. Due to my big brake kit I have to keep it at 18". When you get that big things start getting expensive. I got lucky on the front wheels since the off the shelf one's had my needed back spacing. The rears on the other hand, well, I had to go custom.
I do not have the rear wheels yet, but soon.

I will toy with the ride height. I am pretty sure I will end up with new UCA and coil overs before too long.
The head guy said my heads were done last night, so after I pay that bill I will see whats left over and get upgraded suspension.

Well the anticipation is killing me. My head guy sends me pictures of the progress and says; "Well, one more day". The worst thing is when I get my heads back this weekend I still won't be able to install them since I am having the Valve springs sent to get cryogenically treated. So I wait patiently and this weekend I will install the new rear springs and Del-A-Lum bushings. Should be able to set the ride height really soon. New windshield goes in this Monday, then a final seam seal on the cowl area and install the front calipers.
Here is the Head pics I just got.

This one is PRE chamber polish

:firefire::firefire::firefire::firefire::firefire: :firefire::firefire::firefire:

Just some FYI:
Proponents of cryogenics claim all kinds of advantages for deep freezing valve springs and other engine parts. The process involves chilling parts down to about 300 degrees below zero Fahrenheit using liquid nitrogen in a computer-controlled freezer. At such extremely cold temperatures, most molecular vibration stops.

The parts are allowed to cold soak for up to 24 hours or more. This allows the atoms in the metal’s microstructure to settle down and rearrange themselves into a more densely packed state. The change in metallurgy helps relieve residual stress in the parts that can cause cracks and failure, and it helps some parts hold up better by slightly increasing their surface hardness.

These are all positive changes for a valve spring, but the degree to which a cryogenic treatment improves a valve spring will vary depending on the wire in the spring. One manufacturer said for the average valve spring, it may increase spring life several fold. But for really high quality valve springs, they have not seen enough improvement to justify the extra cost. Even so, if a racer wants his valve springs frozen it isn’t going to hurt anything either.

The fronts are 265 35 18 on 18x9 wheels.
The rears are 18x10 with 285 35 18. The rears are custom offset so they are not here yet.

The fronts? It was either 4.75 or 5. The rears is 6 1/8th. There will need to be some beating of the inner fenders but they should fit just fine by our measurements.

6+ is a lot of backspacing for the rear with a stock width 10 bolt. You may need spacers just to keep the tires from hitting the springs. Without a Panhard bar or Watts link and 6+ backspace you'll probably have rubbing issues on the inside with any serious cornering even after pounding the wells. Watch your parking brake cables when you run wheels with a lot of backspacing.

This is 5.75" backspacing.

NotaTA - I was thinking the same thing but maybe his rear is a little shorter? Looks like 5.75" is about the limit on a stock rear from your pic. Thanks for posting that for reference.

John you set a very good argument. I went all over your build threads to find your Back Spacing and when I went to measure out mine it looked that I could get an easy 6 out of her. With the Jig that I built it was clear all around. Maybe I will get my plasma cutter out and just notch the leaf springs. :hammer: :hammer:
Totally kidding. As much as I don't want to run spacers, if I need to I guess that will be my only choice.
I will see how this plays out next week.

Thanks again for your incite.

With the Global West shackle kit you'll probably have less side to side movement than mine did with the Hotchkis setup. With 5.75" BS my tires would just barely rub the inner fender near the center if I hit the curbing on road courses hard while pulling pretty good lateral G's. I was told by other guys following me they could see the car move back and forth over the axle about an inch or so going in and out of corners. A Panhard or Watts link would cure the issue and if I was "racing" I'd probably spend the time and money to do it. But being a second or two faster or slower around a course isn't going to make any difference to me, I just go to HPDE's for fun and never timed myself on any track. You might get away with 6" on the street with the Del A Lums.

I didn't post in my build thread because I don't want guys running out buying wheels based on my new sizes before I test them but my new fronts are 18 X 10 with 6" backspace (turning radius has been limited) and rears also 18 X 10 but with less than 5.75 BS. Something to consider for the future if you found someone who wanted your 18 X 9's. You might be able to put your custom 6" BS wheels on the front and order a new pair of rears. If you're going to paint the car I'd recommend cutting and rolling the rear wheel well lip.

Thanks for the Info John. Very much appreciated. That's not a bad idea about building the new ones for the rear and installing the others on the front.

I do plan on cutting and rolling the rear fenders. I had a guy come down to do that the other day but his equipment was more intended for the "Ricer" crew and couldn't roll real steel body cars.
I will be installing the new Del-A-Lum shekel kit and springs this weekend. Tomorrow actually. I will measure again with my older Torque Thrust wheels where they run and see what I can expect with the new ones.
Thanks again John.
