Guys,

I know it’s late notice, but there might be an opportunity for a small few of us to get onto the track prior to the end of the year.

I'm hoping that this thread will garner a little more attention. So maybe we can get a small group together to have a little fun during our time off, assuming you get some time off.

Here is some info on the track from a previous thread:

Track is going to be great. 140 feet of elevation change and just over 2 miles long. I'll be there in the go-cart.
Robert
AMP Website (http://www.atlantamotorsportspark.com)
AMPconstruction update thread (https://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?87750-AMP-Atlanta-Motorsports-Park-Construction-Update)

I want to get up to the track on one of the following days (maybe TWO of those days):

Friday 12/28
Sunday 12/30
Monday 12/31

Let’s get up there once or twice prior to the year’s end!!

I am pretty sure we have to RSVP so get back to me ASAP if interested. This isn’t anything formal, I believe we just RSVP, show up, do some tech, do some ride-alongs, then have fun.

Looking forward to it!

Hi Adam. This is Jacob. I drove the red S2000 at the past two PSMC's

I did a track day at AMP on December 2nd, and it was awesome. I am definitely interested if you are able to put something together. Please let me know.

Me too! Like I said earlier, the track is awesome, and it would be great to get one last track day before the season. Hopefully we can all get together since there was no PSMC this year.

Should be fun. I have been talking with Adam about this. Should have a day nailed down soon.

I won't be running the car, but will be there to hang out and ride along if I can come up with a helmet.

I would give rides if allowed, but so far there are only 2 people that want to drive. I figured that there would be more interest in this.

I think we may be up to 3 or 4 depending on the day. I'm leaning toward Sunday the 30th...

Don't forget there is a noise limit at the track. 98db at 50', and yes they are checking. There are a number of meters around the track. They will black flag you.

I've been meaning to post something up for people wanting to buy track days. In the mean time, PM me or Adam if you need to buy a track pass.

I'm curious - how hard is it to meet the noise limits? My car has Flowmaster American Thunder mufflers on it and it's fairly loud.

Thanks

Yes these cars are loud! I would be surprised if Eric passes at full throttle. I went to a track day up there with a 68 bird with a BB and he never went full to keep under the sound limit. Not sure what he had for exhaust, but sounded like a lot of the PT cars volume wise at idle.

This is an early 3 lap I took with my iPhone on a suction cup mount. I got faster and faster and was hitting 90+ before the braking zone at turn one. My 40year old Saginaw power steering pump overheated and boiled out about 2:30 so I was just giving ride-alongs after that. Got a chance to give Jim Grayson, Susan and Jessica rides before heading home. It was awesome, the track is crazy-twisty and the blind hills are a blast to climb. I can't wait to get back with a pump cooler!

I picked one of Eric's laps after he had passed me in that video and got about 1:41-1:42. Pretty quick.

Just picked one of the other videos on YouTube...Nissan GTR and newer 5.0 Mustang were running 1:40-1:41. And I heard one of the 5.0's in our group yesterday was turning 1:38 with a good driver.

Not bad for a 40-year-old Duster to keep up with those sweet rides!

i had to wash my junk from all the salt on it from hauling it down. i couldn't hardly get the brake dust off the front wheels! i actually felt the wilwoods fade yesterday, and i think i glazed the pads. anybody have any ideas on pad selection?

HectorM52
12-31-2012, 06:55 PM
Sadly, my Hawk race pads sit in the garage. I wanted to swap them over, but I wanted to try to get one more session out of my previous pads prior to junking them. Otherwise, I'd give you some feedback on those.

jv982
01-02-2013, 05:44 AM
That was a great track day! Thanks Adam and Robert for putting it together!

As far as pads go, I use Carbotech xp10's in the front and xp8's in the rear. They are very popular with the Mustang crowd. The Carbotech pads are a bit pricey for the brembos in the front, but I am happy with them so far. Supposedly they make the only pads with dust that is noncorrosive. I only noticed a tiny amount of fade during 1 session in the afternoon, and it was immediately after a session from my codriver. So that was ~40min of hard driving before I got any fade. I imagine that the mustang is at least as heavy as the duster.

We took time on a few of the cars out there (approximate):
GT3 RS 4.0 - 1:30
C5 ZO6 - 1:36
Silver 370z Nismo - 1:38
Mustang 5.0 (Driver 2) - 1:38
Mustang 5.0 (Driver 1) - 1:39-1:40
Duster - 1:41-1:42
Yellow 370z - 1:44

Eric,
Did you ever have a chance to pass the Ariel Atom? He was not fast, and he pitted before I had a chance to pass him. I would have loved to get that on video! Next time we hit the track I want a ride in the duster. It is super impressive!

jv982
01-02-2013, 10:36 AM
Unfortunately I only got video from the first few sessions because my sd card filled up, and I was unable to record or confirm our best lap times. Here are the fastest laps that I caught on video. The first was 1:39.3. The second was slow because of traffic, and the 3rd was 1:39.6.

That's pretty impressive for the Duster, I've been trying to get someone to build one like that and race in our Outlaw Vintage Series.
I only ran a 1:40 with my 68 Firebird at AMP. Brakes were my problem, 11" factory discs in a 3250 lb car ain't enough there, I cooked them before the day was done.

Where's the build thread for the Duster?

I timed one of the laps I had on video and it was an embarrasing 1:52. I guess I could have done a little better if I had a little more time to practice and push it and wasn't worried about getting home in it! I ordered another power steering pump today and i'll put it in Saturday. It is totally smoked and I had no boost on the way home to Snellville. I'll plumb a cooler for it too to prevent that from failing again.
I couldn't stop thinking about when I was a little guy playing with cars on the floor and dreaming of a chance like I had Sunday. I waited 50 years and it finally happened! Thanks again Adam and everybody for making the day amazing and I'll never forget it!
...And count me in if a track day at Road Atlanta comes up.... ;-)

awesome videos. Eric, I can't believe your car hasn't garnered more attention than it has. It is truly one of the coolest PT cars out there, and more capable and dialed in better than many of the more well-known cars. I hope you get the recognition you and your car deserve, and can't wait to have a car on the track at the same time you do. Would be fun to have the Duster as the vehicle to try and catch.

Thanks Eric. Yep I can't afford to put "top notch" components on my car so DSE was out! I found cheaper, more practical alternatives for the front arms and some other components that had "issues" but got them sorted. I did all the work myself except the final spray and loved every minute. A car on a budget can be a challenge but that's part of the fun! Your car is awesome and a serious no-nonsense purpose built machine that is an inspiration to us all. Hope to see it again soon!

If you look close at my car you'll see the suspension is mostly handbuilt and uses modified OEM parts as well. No tube A-arms, no coil overs, leaf spring rear axle, 15" rims with factory 11" brakes.
Doing more with less and mostly on my own is definitely a big part of the fun.

Robert,
Darrell is still getting his 66 Mustang sorted out, but he's finally down to the exhaust system, and while I was barely legal at AMP running baffles, which cost me a bunch of hp btw, he'll have to have an extra X back exhaust system built to get him under the db limit there. We still hope to run AMP a couple of times this year though.

Trying to catch/keep up with Wracker proved more difficult than I imagined. One of several things could have happened to Eric: 1) The Duster was majorly upgraded after RTOS or, 2) I really sucked on Sunday or 3) Eric learned how to drive that thing! ;) Just kiddin'!! Though I really was glad to have a decent sized grouping of cars right around the same speed. The laps where I was chasing someone were much more fun than the laps by myself!!

Hey all,

Was great meeting everyone and hanging out! I'm late to the game, but here's a vid I took in Adam's truck. This was a couple of the first laps, so I didn't catch any of the 4 wheel drift 120mph passes that were happening at the end of the day. That track is awesome and hope to get back to it soon! I didn't take any pics, left my camera @ home because I was unsure of the track and leaving the camera out while doing ride alongs.

Eric definitely knows that car and drives it with grace, I've got to get some seat time!

Hate that I had to leave so abruptly but I would have been easily talked into dinner, then I'd have to deal with a week's worth from the missus, so I yellow bellied and took the easy way out.

Hope to get some more time and make it back down to hang out with ya'll.

Robert, you have a link to the S10 project? Would like to keep tabs on it.

I'm sad that didn't make it on any film. Though I'm sure if you watch some video from later in the day you'll be able to see the skid marks as well as the clump of grass that fell out of my fenders as we were going down toward the bridge.

lol, I've been after Adam to weld a push mower handle into the bed so it looks right going around the track. :)

Found some of my carnage in one of the vids. Pretty sure you're not supposed to turn "right" at this point...

You mean the 24th, right?

I will be there, and I am bringing 2 others.

For those on the fence about this, this is the perfect opportunity to get some track time. Last time, I got enough track time to burn through 2 tanks of gas. In addition, last time there were not set sessions, and hardly no traffic. The track was hot all day except for lunch time. We were able to run as little or as much as we wanted.
