I have a new 140amp Powermaster 12si style single wire alternator on "Dust Off". It has been working fine but now I'm wondering what is needed to convert this alt to a regulated style. I assume I need to install an internal regulator or something along that line. I have wiring diagrams so I know how to connect it to the car but I'm curious if the alt can be converted.

The powermaster I bought had both options, one wire or three wire. They had a black plastic cap over the regulator. You may want to check that first.

I'll check that, my powermaster has a black plastic cap over the regulator as well.

Find local re-builder and simply have regulator swapped out. Part of the way those no wire alts work is with a "defective" regulator that has an incorrect internal shunt inside. I have seen some people pull the caps off but many will never turn off and run batteries down. You can also tear it down your self. Swap out regulator with a good one from napa store, use echlin branded ones. Reloading the brushes only require a paper clip or the red spout nozzle off a can of wd 40.
no wire alternators "self excite" but are lousy at low speeds from my 25 yrs of mechanics experience.

Good, I was wondering if a simple regulator swap would do the trick. Replacing the regulator is not a big deal for me. I have noticed the lights dim down while setting at a traffic light at idle. I have also noticed the lights dim when the radiator fan switches on. From what I have read switching to a sensing alt will help this.
