View Full Version : Shortening rear-end...how far out should wheels stickout???

I just finished mini-tubbing a 67 F-body w/ 335/18" rear tires on 18x12 rims. I'm now in the process of measuring the rearend spacing between both rear wheels w/ Baer brakes but am a little unclear as to how far out the wheels should stickout in relation to the outer wheelhouse lip. I'm using 3" DSE drop springs and a 12 bolt rear. Car is currently on jacks.

I've experimented with several configurations and fitting the tire inward so that it completely clears this outer wheelhouse lip looks awkward as the wheel looks 'buried'. When I move it outward where it looks awesome it looks like it intersects the same plane as the outer wheelhouse lip(about half way). I'm not sure if this means the car would bottom-out with 3" drop springs when i hit a bump or what.

Should the top of the rear tire completely clear the outer wheelhouse lip(that curves 90 degrees inward) or can the tire slightly overlap the same plane as the outer wheelhouse lip section with no problem???

Should I shorten the rear so that the rear tires COMPLETELY clear the
outter wheelhouse lip and then use spacers to move them outward if need be down the road toachieve the desired look/stance???

Can anyone post pics to clarify???

Thanks, Chris

I like them tucked just inside the rear wheelhouse lip. Look at the thread below with chris Kerr's camaro IMO they look great that way

yes, its easier to modify the inner than it would be to modify the outer side. spacers can be your friend but careful measurement can avoid that.
Heres Mike's page (http://hometown.aol.com/gumbydmit22/mpcamaro.html) there are some good pictures. I have more if you like. shoot me an email and i'll send them to you. [email protected]

IMO you should roll the lip and put the wheel out as far as you can go without rubbing...

Wheels should be a far apart as possible to increase track width and help provide a more stable platform .....WITHOUT EVER, UNDER UNY CIRCUMSTANCE STICK OUT PAST THE FENDERWHEELS AT ALL.
