Chevy Camaro Concept Slated for '06 Detroit Show, '09 Debut
Date Posted 08-04-2005
DETROIT — Chevrolet plans to take the wraps off a concept Camaro at the 2006 Detroit auto show in January.
Also, Inside Line has learned the automaker is evaluating proposals to revive the classic performance-car nameplate in 2009-2010 on a new low-cost rear-wheel-drive platform.
Among the scenarios under discussion inside General Motors is the development of a lower-cost version of the Sigma rear-drive platform that underpins the Cadillac CTS and STS sedans. Another proposal would take the new rear-drive platform that's being developed in Australia for the next-generation Holden Commodore sedan and spin off a low-cost variant for North America.
GM planners are said to have targeted several body styles for the Chevy and Pontiac brands on a new rear-drive platform, including a sport sedan, a sporty coupe and a convertible. The Camaro and GTO badges could be used on those vehicles, according to company sources.
Across town, Chrysler is said to be preparing a concept Dodge Challenger for the '06 Detroit show, to test the market for a proposed two-door performance car it wants to introduce around 2008-2009 as a potential competitor to the Ford Mustang.
What this means to you: Guess it was just a matter of time and environmental awareness — the original definition of muscle cars doesn't fit well with new perceptions of what's best for the world...could there be a "green" muscle car in our future?

I dont think I could get excited about ANYTHING GM has planned. They have teased the public with this before, just to pull it back. It may end up looking like a Crown Vic for all we know. GM hasnt produced anything worth looking at other than the Vette in the last few years.
I LOVE the new Mustangs, but would LOVE to see the Camaro/Firebird back and better than ever...but I am not holding my breath.

2009??? Obviously there's no semblance of urgency. That's sad.

If the car is decent that will be about the time for my next daily driver. But GM has been in the business of disapointing me for the last couple of years.Lets hope for the best.

I read an article in either Car & Driver or Road & Track about the Challenger. Chrysler "is" suppose to build it to battle with the Mustang. As for the Camaro, I sure hope it doesn't turn out like the GTO, looks wise.

Nobody killed Zeta. It's being re-evaluated.
If GM's past designs didn't inspire you...your in for a rude awakening. Now that the Lutz regime is here, that's all going to change. Our Designers have been given full range to do what they do best and in the coming years you are going to be seeing some if the most spectacular designs coming out of Warren, Michigan in decades. Just look at the Solstice, you gotta give it up to that car...it's going to be the most attractive roadster in world when it debuts. Saturn Sky will be even better...they are shining examples of the new design direction here at GM.
Lutz is pulling no punches, he and Welburn have that place firing on all 12 cylinders. Believe me when I say this...it's the dawn of a new era at GM. And make no mistake...Lutz, Cowger, Welburn and a host of others understand completely the importantence and the undying legacy of one of America's most beloved automotive icons (Camaro).
Here's one more little tid bit......Ed Welburn (Head of Design Center) drives a yellow and black Pro-Touring '69 Camaro to work almost every day. How you like THEM apples?
I gotta stop right there.

Trapin, thats the first good news on gm in a while, thanks.I will forgive the demise of the astro van if the new camaro is nice.
Do you think the pendulum will swing and retro will be out by then?

Man, it's good to hear that Chrysler is at least pondering the possibility of a Dodge Challenger to challenge the Mustang! I just hope that DC will have the wisdom to put a live rear axle under the chassis of the new Challenger to keep it somewhat affordable!

Will the Camaro have retro styling or will it look crazy and have some Camaro badges.

this is pretty good news and trapin you give me hope for sure, but 09 is a long way off and i think theres no excuse for taking that long. even though it will be availible in 08 thats still pretty weak that its taken them six years to come back out with something to even compare to a mustang. i know ford loves having a market cornered even if it is because theres no one else in that market.
oh and i still want the firebird to come back and be the cousin or sister or twin or whatever you want to call it to the camaro.

Whoa! What happened? Did somebody shoot all of the accountants?
I have to admit, the Solstice and Sky are awsome looking rides. My eldest son has his heart set on buying one of them when he's done college. One more year to go :pat:
As for the retro styling, it has probably created more distinction between cars since it started. A Camaro styled after a '69 and a Firebird styled after the early '70s would look just fine to me.
It's also comforting to know that some of the dudes who call the shots are into the hobby, as opposed to some guy who climbed the corporate ladder selling tooth paste and deoderant.

I have no knowledge of a new Camaro being designed. :smoke:
However, I do advise that you pay extremely close attention to The North American International Auto Show in January. It's going to be a great event.
.......you never know what surprises might pop up. :)
