Hey guys I was wondering if anybody had the requirments for setting up a slalom course? IE distances, number of cones and so on. I was thinking about setting one up and having my buds or someone take times on me driving. Or if anybody in the DFW area is interested we could maybe get it aranged and have a group of people do it? :drive2:

420 ft. with 6 gates (cones) 70ft apart...

That is what we use when we test..

Wish I could be there.. I hate cones and like to punish them whenever possible..

Cool thanks for the info. I just wanted to set some up and start getting a feel for my car.

Why is it that the tuner mags (super chevy, phr, etc) use the 420 ft. It makes direct comparisons to Motor Trend numbers difficult. Andrew Schear told me that the reasoning was that they wanted to keep speeds down, but Chris over at Motor Trend did not have any issues running an el caminio and 67 chevelle that I brought out through the standard Motor Trend testing regiment.

I really feel that using standard tests to measure performance would be a much nicer feature for you magazine.

The 420 thing sort of reminds me of shopping for a TV, it is impossible to find a store that will let you watch normal cable on their demo units, always some sort of nature b.s. so you don't really get an impression for real world performance.

Just my $.02

I don't know.. same reason we use a 200ft skid pad instead of a 300 foot one.. I expected them to use 600 ft cones. Maybe it is a space issue since the lot we use at Fontana is not that huge :dunno:

I will ask though.. and I agree..

I’d have to agree. The area that they test in (slalom, 60-0 and skid pad) is a parking lot that has permanent light fixtures throughout. A car could get out of hand quickly and wrap around a cement pole. On a slalom track, the distance between the gates should be the topic of comparison. Does anybody know what Motor Trend uses?

Motor Trend also tests in lot 12 at Cali Speedway, in fact their cones are in almost the exact same place.

MT uses a 600ft slalom

Maybe they have a bigger budget and we can only afford 7 cones?? :dunno:

;)

Like I said.. I will ask next week and post the official answer.. even if I don't like or agree with it.. lol

P.S. We don't test in lot 12.. maybe we should.. that vast wasteland in the back is only used for photo shoots by us..

There are two gouges in the pavement towards the back of lot 12 thanks to an awesome burnout (Notto’s calendar December). I do believe my car made that section of asphalt a tad unsafe. Hey Steve – can you try to get me a copy of those burn out pics?
