View Full Version : Considering something a little different... A Supra wearing a fat-suit!

I have been wanting to build an early 70's Firebird for some time, and that will happen, but in the meantime I've been considering doing something fun with my daily driver. It's a 1992 Lexus SC400 and while it is most definitely a luxury car it has the suspension from the MkIV Supra so there are a ton of aftermarket parts for corner carving and brake upgrades and it's built on a strong framework. The 1uz 4.0 liter engine is based on an IRL design and has a 6-bolt bottom end, forged crank, hypereutectic pistons, and twin-cam 4-valve heads, but little aftermarket support. There are a few kits to bolt in an LSX engine combined with numerous transmissions and a Supra TT posi-rear bolts right in the rear cradle as well.
It will never be a viable road-course car due to it's weight (and I don't want to give up the luxury) but still, a V8 and rear-wheel drive car with some power and suspension prowess is a good thing no matter what badge is on the nose, right?

Why not swap a Surpa engine into the car? If not, an LSx powered one would be cool too. I really like the GS300/400 from the late 90s/early 2000s. I would drive the hell out of one with an LSx/T56 combo. Good luck which ever route you take.

It will cost you a ton of cash to build an aristo motor. you prob ably won't find a supra motor anywhere. LS would be the way to go.

Lextreme has quite a few engine mods that can give it a boost depending on how much you want to dig into the 1uz.

I love those cars. I am in the middle of putting a M112 SC 1UZ with a R154 in my 73 Nova. There is no need to swap out the motor. There is nothing you could put in there that for the same cost you could make that 1U run like a scalded cat. Take a look at Bullet performance and their complete supercharger kit. Fits right under the hood.

A 1UZ and an R154 in a Nova? Now THAT'S being different!!!
Yes, a supercharger does wonders for these engines. The SC400 in this video has a vortech supercharger, a dragon converter, and a stock trans rebuild and is running 12.06!
Holy hole-shot!!!

The only thing that makes me question this route is mileage, I get 18/24 as it is and could better that with an LS3 with nearly double the horsepower.

Saw a turbo header and some other upgrades on one of those running like mid 11s and daily driven, just shed the hypertech pistons, Wiesco, JE, Ross and others can make pistons if none are on shelf.
Other than pistons and some good fasteners and decent clutch for a manual your ok on most other stuff. Looked at doing a SBC swap on one few years back but finances were all messed up.
Good Luck

Not bad! I had a red 95 as a daily when I was in high school. Never really got around to modifying it, though.
