View Full Version : It's finally tuned - 637 RWHP today

I just got back from the chassis dyno with my 69 Camaro and on the 4th pull it showed 637 RWHP. The Michelin's (335/17) were a little too hard for ideal numbers as they kept going up in smoke from lack of traction (or too much torque). The guy that did the final tune of the FAST fuel injection said that he was sure that with a better tire he could pull 675-700 HP to the wheels no problem. I told him that for a pump gas street car I wasn't worried because I couldn't even handle what it was putting out right now. It was a sight though, as soon as the motor was fired it looked like someone dropped a sugar cube on an ant hill the way everyone appeared and crowded aroung the bay. I wish I would have taken a video cam.
The motor pulled so much air that it pulled the rear air filter out of the air box on the first run! The air box will certainly have to be re-engineered to a quality design that can handle the air flow. Anyone know a (good, experienced) designer/tig welder that is up to the challenge?

you could round up 637.5 to 638

The actual output was actually 637.5 so rounding off would actually result in 638HP. :firefire: :firefire: :firefire:

For anyone that doesn't want to calculate the motor is 638 cubic inches (hence 69camaro638), but now that will represent RWHP too!
I hope I can learn to handle this beast :drive2:
Wow pretty good numbers for such a mild cam!! It must make for an exremely "driveable" motor with huge power. Just being able to tell people you have a "638" must be cool. Imagine going to the parts store
you: "need some brake pads"
them: "what year?"
you: "69 camaro"
them: "what motor? 307 or 350?"
you: "638"
them "638 What???"
LOL

Sweet!! What was the rpm on that pass, your dyno sheet doesn't show it.

I believe it was 6600 rpm. This is a solid roller motor and I had the engine builder with me today. He said it was capable of twisting to 7000-7500, :jawdrop: but not with me behind the wheel.

That is a LOT of power.. damn..
Hold me.. I'm scared!!!
7000 RPM? Dayumm..

Also, just remembered that the guy running the dyno tried one pull in 5th gear in an attempt to reduce wheelspin (It's a Viper T56 six speed) but it didn't help. He then asked me if I knew that I had a 200mph car because it hit 158 mph in 5th and it could certainly get to 200 in 6th (but again, not with me behind the wheel). I hope my wife doesn't see this thread.
alright well if you were up at team ford then you live out north of Atl most likely. so when are you planning to bring the car to the Year One Braselton Bash? those are some impressive numbers. was it through full exhaust?

I'm in Canton. I'll have it out and about as soon as I have it finished up. There are just a few minor items left but it may take until mid September. I am very familiar with YearOne as I actually worked there in sales for a grand total of 8 days last summer (trying to find something to do, but it wasn't right for me). I'll have it at the local cruises and possibly at the Good Guys event in Charlotte, NC in October.

Oh sorry, yes it was a full exhaust -
2.25" primary headers
4" dynomax collector mufflers
3.5" oval x-pipe
3.5" oval pipe spin tech mufflers
3.5" oval pipe over the rear to behind the rear wheels.
And as far as my stable (dropit69) yes I have 2 Camaros and a Viper, you're not doing anything wrong, I just sacrificed, worked hard, took risks and got lucky - anyone can do it if I can.

Love the numbers. Trying to figure something out. Is this a 3rd gear run? It is only running 107MPH at 6600RPMs. Does it have a 4.88 in it? If it is not a 3rd gear run, how can 5th gear pick up 50MPH to run 158?

Ya know, I thought all the runs except one were 4th gear runs. The rear has 4.10 gears. It doesn't add up to me either now that you point it out. Maybe the guy was just trying to pump me up, but my friend was standing there with me when the guy blurted out the 158mph 5th gear speed and the 200mph capabilities. I honestly don't care if it can hit 200 anyway, it just surprised me when he made the statement and really increased my fear factor of driving a car with that kind of ability.
The guys were also frowning about the A/C compressor with statements like ... what's the point. I'm guessing that most of their customers are focused on straight line performance, not creature comforts or any cornering abilities.

JP - Sorry, I'm leaving for vacation on the 12th for a week or two.
II Much sure does look perty, that's all David said I was allowed to say :naughty:
Man, that's awesome! Hopefully I'll see it (and you) around sometime. I try to go to the Canton shows and I go up to Road Killer Kustoms on occasion.

Jim - I try to make all of the local cruises too, I'll be at Cartersville this weekend. PM me and I'll give you my cell. I have pulled out of Road Killer Kustoms, but then I wasn't doing any of the work on the vehicles any way
They truely do outstanding work and did quite a bit of the final assembly work on my 69. They have to take care of the paying customers :rotfl: , so I have a friend with another high quality shop that is finishing up my car for me.

I saw it when I visited David, it is a bad looking beotch. I like the graph, looks pretty smooth. It can't be a thrid gear run if it is a 4.10. Seems like it should be running 115 or so at those RPMs with a manual trans and 4.10 gear. Wonder if it actually peaked at 6000? Actually with that cam it may very well peak lower, god help us the power if you stepped that cam up, she would make another 100 HP!

Could tire slippage be the reason? Just a guess.
Scary numbers, regardless! Congratulations.
