All right, so My GTO is at paint, My 75 Trans Am, with the GTO interior is waiting on a harness to be finished up, and my Barracuda are done.. So I picked up a pretty clean 1975 Trans Am with no title here in the bay area.. I already went to the DMV got it registered.. DMV didnt kill me this time.
So I wanted to do is build a car in a 90 day window, I picked this time, because it seemed right :) So The plan is, and you can see I have staged some of the parts already, (kinda cheating alittle) to build the car from start to finish in 90 days. The car is solid, it has 2 very small rust areas I can patch but all in all its pretty clean. Its a 1975 Serling silver, 400 block(which is long gone) with a T400. The interior is solid as well, needs some door panels and headliners stuff but the usual subjects. So I have bought most all the parts, and they are either hear or will be here with in the next week or so..He is the plan..
I will stripp car down, powder coat subbrame, strip bottom, and rear primer/sealer and undercoat. Rear will be rebuilt, and housing painted, I have a new good mark tank, Im putting a full Hotchkis TVS system, global west tubular upper and lower control arms and Konis on all for corners. I will strip fire wall and have a DSE smoothed firewall panel, and a DSE brake booster that will go on..I bought a BRP LSX conversion kit and will drop that on as well..I bought a 2005 LQ9, and it is at the shop, being bored .30 over with new bearing and all the typical maching work, they than will install all the new parts from Scoggin-dickey. I got a custom Cam, LS7 lifter, New LS3 CnC'd heads with springs, a LS7 CLutch set up, and on this car, Im going to run a Vic Jr carb set up with a 850 carb. Car should be around 600HP, Im doing a nice billet pulley set up and havent figured out if I want to do A/C yet. I have a rebuilt T56 going in as well..When I get all the parts back from powder coating, I will make it a roller, and drop off to have it stripped and repainted the factory silver..I have a 4p and 6p wilwood set up with parking brake already, and a set of NewGens 19/20 for the rolling on..The interior is going to be all stock, just refinished to new, but I will be doing all autometer gauges. I am also putting 1976 bumpers front and rear, because they are smoothed..Since I have all the parts, the machine work is going to be done in 2 weeks, and powder coating will take a week.. Im pretty sure, It will go to paint in a month.. as a roller, no motor. I have bet my wife a trip to the Keys, from start to finish 90 days...She is going to take pics along the way.. the only help is my dad.. as he is retired can knock alot out while Im at work. This is my 5th car doing this too..and most take years.. Im hoping I have enough experience to make it in 90 days, but if not.. I love the Keys :)
Here are the pics I took Monday, and we will start and I will be on the clock Saturday :)

Cool, document the heck out of the build. I am about to start digging into my 74 Firebird. I have a Scott Mock subframe on order, Ridetech 4 link for out back and coilovers coming with the subframe from Scott. Mine is getting an L92 and 4L80E. I won't be anywhere close to 90 days though.

I had a '74 T/A 455. I didn't like those bumpers at the time, but now I don't mind 'em.
The exterior color choice can obviously minimize how much they stand out.
I like the '75 look better than the '74 for the bigger rear window and the fog lamps in the grill.
Like you said though, the '76 bumpers are smooth, and I like the 1 and done factor those cars have over the later 2nd gens.

I agree... My other 1975 I have here on pro-touring Im doing a 1977 front and rear.. Just a cleaner look

I dig it, it has a good one going for it. Don't overdo the wheel choice (18" rally) and it would look killer.

I must be the only one out there that likes the 74-76 front end. I am keeping mine, although I may go with a 79-81 rear bumper and taillights with LED's because I like the smooth look of that rear bumper. There are enough 77-78's out there.
Im putting a full Hotchkis TVS system, global west tubular upper and lower control arms and Konis on all for corners.
digging the parts choices, the only thing I would change are the shocks, think about running an adjustable shock from QA1 or Ridetech (single adjust would be fine) it really allows you to adjust from track to daily driving

I know I know.. the paint is my Achilles heal... My GTO I dropped off this week, is a 3 month paint job.. Im hoping because Im going same factory color.. I can cut to a month....

Well we are making headway..My dad stripped the firewall and started tacking the DSE plate up.. The DSE plate fits great. I plan on pulling the window and stripping the dash cowl and getting ready for paint.. I have a patch I need to do in the passenger front seat this weekend as well, and than strip and prime the bottom.. My dad is killing it..He is retired, and has all day to screw around on this thing...

I have knocked out the rear end of the car, and GOD was I a mess.. I never knew how dirty these things are after almost 40 years.. My Dad plans on finishing the midddle of the car and undercoat by Friday.. dry over night and start reassembly on Saturday.. I have all the parts to make it a roller... The motor is almost done... I pick up powder coating Wednesday or Thursday...My dad has a little welding to do on the filler panel and building a patch panels for the passenger floor.. I will take pics of the powder, but I had front sub-frame, bumper brackets, misc radiator brackets and some front headlight surround brackets...

I have 95% of all parts now.. I pick up powder coating Thursday, I called them this morning.. Im pretty much on schedule.. The paint is the main issue...Body is pretty straight, so I hope that helps with time.. I have given 5 weeks for paint..Im hoping it will be less.. The same shop is doing my 1966 GTO...

OHHHHh Im picking up motor, and they painted it in black and left the aluminum heads natural, should I paint the block pontiac blue/teal?? Im moving the coils to the back fire wall low.. so the motor will be pretty noticeable???Whole engine bay(firewall, inner fenders, radiator support) is going to be painted the factory silver... So it might look good either way..

I'm diggin the build.
What color are you going to paint the car? I'm partial to dark hues on 74/75s myself. Subdues the appearance of the bumpers. I was seriously considering picking up a 75 at one time. Dark metallic blue with a flat black hood bird, wheel spokes, window trim and brushed lips and headlight bezels is how I indented to build.
Have any plans for custom work? I've always thought removing the rear bumperetts on these cars and having the exhaust exit in their place would be cool.
Wheels remind me of Momo Revenge but in a 2pc construction. Good snowflake analog.
EDIT: How and how much did it cost to take the body down to bare metal?

Im painting the it the factory Sterling Silver and putting the factory black and red bird, as well as putting the 76 bumpers.. No real custom stuff.. I like my cars very simple....We did strip the bottom down.. the upper car, alot of stripping there... Im painting under the hood, the inner fenders, all that will be stripped to bare metal. The main body, the paint is some thin, it wont take much to strip it.. The painter is handling all that...

First off, way cool build thread. It's neat for us following so we only follow for 90 days instead of years like some builds take.
Second, Those are NEWGEN wheels lol I kept reading Nextgen and thought who makes those?
Good news though....Jon is still around and building NewGen's. Driverz Inc is no more but NewGen is still alive and well. I actually had lunch with Jon about a month ago. He is in the middle of building a website, www.newgenwheels.com but mainly uses facebook. www.facebook.com/newgen-wheels I believe. He just came out with a few new bad ass wheel designs too!
Hope that helps somebody still wanting his wheels! I have the Descendants on my Chevelle:

That's definitely a cool way to approach things! I'm a Sales Rep by trade....my schedule is usually a to do list and just lists "Everything" haha. I do make lots of lists of things to do with the Chevelle though. There's always so many details to restoring a car and its hard to remember if you adjusted this, tightened that, filled the fluid, etc. And thanks for the compliments on the Chevelle. :)

Nice looking ride !So far along in a short time doesn't it feel great? I'm attempting the same thing with a 68 Camaro only I'm doing paint myself too,man what a challenge lol. I'm really liking the fact your running a carb on an LS motor I wanna go that route with mine but I'm 'NOT' sure exactly how to do the build on the motor so I'm watching how you do yours. so give us lots of details on it please... thanks car really does look pretty fantastic so far! wish i lived closer I'd love to give you a hand with your build

No updates, I dont get either car back till the 15th.. but at least I started working on my 68 Bird, 408 stroker/t56, ridetech 4 link, unisteer rack&pinion, global west control arms, 6 piston wilwoods front and 4p back.. 245/35/18 front 345/25/18 rear Budniks.. So far every part has benn bought used from flee bay/craigslist and here.. a true budget build, the only thing I had to really pay for full price was the rear end, had axle housing narrowed and custom axles. Im building this for the hotrod power tour, I already powder coated the front subframe, did the DSE firewall filler.. I got the car with a full media blast, and under coated and mini tubbed (though I had to move it a little to clear the 345's)

I followed the DSE online video. It already had a mini tub for 315 tires, so I had to cut the old out, and notch the frame..Im planning on taking it to a place called RAS-CO here locally and have them tin it out.. I will take some pics later this week..

Kevin,
If this was listed in the thread, I'm sorry, but I am working on a Vintage air system in my 1969 Vert, and want to run the lines hidden like yours. Do you mind saving me a month of searching for AC lines, and tell me how you did it, and where you got the lines from? I have the gen IV evaporator mounted, and want as few connections as possible. I am running a ZZ383 with a low mount sanden SD7 compressor on the passenger's side.
Here's the build thread by notata, a mechanic who is doing the build with me:

Ok latest updates...I got the Hotchkis sway bars in, I put the tank in, I ran the brakes lines, I got the battery mounted in the trunk, I ran the battery cable, mounted all the relays, added front fenders, worked on all the new wiring.. I got the new Ididit via UPS today, didnt get in in..mounted the coils on custom brackets, look at pics, there really isnt any other place to add them to. Built a custom plate for the MSD. I mounted the Fuel pump, than moved it, in the pics you will see it in original space than remember I needed room for exhaust so moved more inboard. I also started the paint on the dash.. just wasnt digging the silver. I also got the LED taillights in.. They are going to look SIC! It was a good 3 day weekend..

ryeguy2006a

Hard to say given the car market. Once I am done with my LS1 swap, I am estimating that my car will be worth between 20-22k, and your car is much nicer than mine. I would estimate between 26-28k.

02-19-2013, 09:50 AM
I dont think it will be that low :) I will be driving it for a while, may after hot August nights and drop it off to a custom car seller here local in the bay area..I have the a guestimate of 40-50..

I think there may be difference between what it is worth and what somebody will pay for it. I am building a 74 Firebird and I know that I will probably get hosed if I sell it since it is a less desirable year. You mentioned going with a 77-78 nose, if so, that should help out the value.

This is a truthful statement... and with economic times being what they are at the moment, the market for toys is saturated already. This drives pricing down, and down hard.

OK, were back on it... Im trying to wrap up 2 cars at once, the GTO and this T/A.
Here is a video of her running under her own power, I have since adjusted the carb so it idles nicely..

Well, funny story.. I ended up swapping out the front end... I didnt like the way the front bumper and headlight header were lining up.. So I converted the whole front end and hood.. Of course nothing is the same.. I also spent time making sure the shaker was functional, the Edlebrock LS3 carb intake was to high, I swapped to the GM LS3 Carb intake and it gave me the proper clearance. I finished the rear package tray, rear window is back in with sail panels, than I dropped off.. I finished my GTO and fixed some things bugging me on the Cuda so I could sell it.. I should have some pic updates soon.. I have to go back to paint since the hood and bumpers are all red :)
qnitro
09-29-2013, 07:07 PM
OK, So here are some pics. I have the front end all set up, the hood latch now works, the Shaker, is now completely functional, I had to replace the Edelbrock intake with a GM one, to lower the base to make shaker fit under hood. I have the fenders and front end with all the brackets..
Here are some pics.

Kevin,
The 75/77 TA came out beautiful! If I didn't follow your whole project and you didn't pop the hood, I would have sworn there was a built 400 Poncho with a Comp cam under there! The 19"/20" wheel combo doesn't look that bad either- normally I wouldn't even consider 20's on a 2nd gen Firebird. Congratulations on a great ride!

Yeah, Im 6'5" :) So I had to move seats :)
Did you move the seats back or just pick a low seat. I am 6'4" and building a 74. I am looking at Cipher seats and will likely mount the driver's side seat on flat plate to the floor. How much head room do you have? I want a little more bolstering with the seats. Short of the change to the 77 nose, the car looks awesome (JK, I think the 77 nose looks awesome too, there are just so few 74-76 cars running around).

Love the car. Remind me what seats you are running. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, I am tall like you and I am pretty concerned about getting seats low enough for me to fit.

Hard to say given the car market. Once I am done with my LS1 swap, I am estimating that my car will be worth between 20-22k, and your car is much nicer than mine. I would estimate between 26-28k.
