Recently found this forum looking for wheel info. Looked up my alley.
My ex stepfather bought this car new COPO. Living in NY at the time and being a cheap anal retentive accountant he did the COPO trying to save a few pennies. Wanted a V8 so it got the base 350 2bbl. Was too cheap to pop for an auto so it has the default Muncie 3 speed. Hated the column shift enought to want a floor shift. Cheapest way to get that was the "Sport" package that included buckets, remote driver side mirror, delux steering wheel, dekux hub caps and the center consol. Living up north he popped for "safety track"( Pontiac Posi) and 3.23 gears for economy. He also popped for the convenience light package that included under hood, trunk and rear seat armrest courtesy lights. Base am radio and rear speaker.
He moved south a year after he took delivery and its amazingly rust free. I bought it about 20 years ago when he and my mom got married and he didn't want it to sit on the driveway.
Being an accountant he documented every repair and service. He also kept the dealer copy of the window sticker, protecto plate, processed check, COPO order form, bill of sale, original owners manual still in the dealer pouch.
The numbers matching motor lost oil pressure 11 years ago at a little over 200k. It's not locked up thankfully and I was less then a mile from home when it happened so it limped home. I wanted to play with the car i slid the numbers matching motor under the work bench and I started looking for a motor.
Found a guy in AL that just totaled his 68 tempest backwards into a ditch. Motor turned out to be a mild built 400 out of a 78 Formula 400 Firebird. Compression tested it before we pulled it and it hit 164-168 on all 8 with a weak battery. What he knew was it is .040 over flat tops and a cam. It has a Eddlebrock RPM intake and a Demon 750 feeding it. Running the casting numbers it has the small chamber big valve 6x(unleaded) heads. Guessing 8.5:1 compression with the chamber size and compression numbers (my 9:1 toyota is 172-175 as reference). Playing with online calculators playing with what I think it has its around 350-400hp as a guess and probably 400-450 ftlb of torque.
I finally got it back on the road last year after getting my oldest out of the house freeing up some time and money. Just put a st of wheels on it last week so I can enjoy it now. Running 17x8 and 17x9.5 MB "Old Schools" with 245/40 17 front and 275/40 17 rear BFG G-Force comp2s.
Plans include negative camber correction on the front. Brake upgrade to willwood or corvette 6 piston fronts and disc rear and Typical A body suspension up grades. Like to slip a 6 speed Richmond in it and 3.73 gears at some point. Making it more of a canyon carver for some of the great roads we have nearby including the Dragons tail and some auto cross.
Please excuse and typos not use to my wife's iPad.
