Hi all,I am new to the form.
The car I need help with is not in the same "style" if you will with the cars on this form but I did not know where ells to post and you look like the best form to ask due to your knowledge of custom subframes..etc.I am looking at buying a car a Mercedes benz w108 and putting a toyota 1 or 2 jzgte engine in it,but I don't like the rear suspension setup with the swing arms and I would like to know from you if it would be possible to custom make a new subframe for the car to take a newer setup like IRS?
Any help would be appreciated.

Anything is possible with time and money. Spend some time checking out other IRS swaps maybe it will give you some ideas.

Thanks for the reply 19,69camaro.Do know where I can start to find out if another cars rear end with IRS will fit if I build a custom frame? And how it will effect the height?

THe car shouldn't end up any higher if built correctly. Very likely you WILL have to cut the floor pan out and build mounts to attach the IRS to. I would look at a Nissan 350Z suspension as a place to start.

Wow, that thing is CRAZY! Can I have the old one...? Hahaha. Seriously, I would forget the semi-trailing arm setup on the left if you really want the car to handle. It WOULD be easier to install, but is not a very good design for proper geometry. Here's a picture of the 350Z setup I suggested earlier. Actually pretty easy to install if you use the whole cradle.

Hi,my thing is lets say I use a 350z setup I would probably have to build a frame to mount it to the car,do you maybe know of a thread I can read about a similar build in another car?And where do you attach the frame to the car if it's a monocoque chassis?Because to my knowledge(very little in this department) a monocoque chassis car is dependent on the whole body working together for it's strength and if you cut out a part of the under side it weakens the body?Like a round object distributing the fore equally but when you dent it or what ever you create a weak point and make it easier to fail(please correct me if I am wrong). The thing with building a custom frame for me was always where to attach it to the body if it's a monocoque body because to me it feels like anywhere you attach it it puts a whole lot of stress on that part of the body and creates a weak point or the makes it easy for the frame to bend,tear...etc the body?
Now that's the kind of stuff I what to learn.

Come take my class.... LOL. You don't necessarily "ruin" a unibody structure by cutting into it. You just have to understand how to replace the structure you remove or alter. The attachment points are determined by how the subframe fits around the rear axle centerline (wheel still has to fit in the fender). How you build the mounts and reinforce the structure changes from car to car...

Where can I read more about altering a monocoque and how to determen where the attachment points are?
