Picked up a 1979 Porsche 928 that was wrecked. The car was stored indoors all of it's 34 years & had only 12,178 miles on her. The 79 will be used primarily for the like new, funky, pascha interior, wiring harness, etc. Picked up an 1980 roller just north of Dallas primarily for the shell, unibody, & suspension pieces. Stripped the 80 then sent it out for paint. Shaved the side moldings, side marker lights, rear wiper, door locks, headlight squirters, etc. Ordered a new LS376/525 (injected) motor then found a good used (16,000 mile)T-56 out of a 2004 Z06. The Piranha Bros fabricated a custom rear crossmember & trans mount. Stay tuned. 77tony

Yeah, hatch lock was inoperable when the 80 roller was picked up. How about painters tape-hopefully will keep from scratching the fresh paint. T

Glad y'all like. Dinsdale of the infamous "Piranha Bros" is the lead on this build. Dinsdale fabricated a rear crossmember and trans mount. Custom cut chrome molly axles and bell housing adapter plate by xchop for the 928 - Vette T56. T

Purchased the Holley LS Retro fit oil pan P/N 302-1.Looks like we need to either raise the motor approx 1.25" to clear the crossmember or cut the pan 1.25". Would rather cut the pan if not to much trouble to keep the engine lower in the bay and keep the center of gravity lower. This would also provide clearance on the top of the motor and the top crossmember. Has anyone cut & welded these cast aluminum pans without to much difficulty ? I do have access to a Tig Welder. TIA. 77tony

I like the color you chose. Cutting and welding on the cast aluminum pans is no big deal. Before all the swap pans and various pan options came about, that's what people did to make these engines fit. In your case, I would be worried about oil drain back into the sump. You'll be making a dam in the oil pan essentially if you just cut a notch into the pan.

Can you not redesign that portion of the cross member instead of just notching it?

Good luck.

Yes, that should work with the pan so long as it clears the windage tray and oil pump pick up. I'm afraid you may not have the room on the inside of the oil pan to notch the pan properly. I think notching and bracing the xmember on the car will be the smart way to go but I'm not there in person to see what all you're working around.

That interior is cool.

Thank you. Tried to order a Mast pan today but they are NIS until mid-late Dec. The steering rack sits under the crossmember so cutting into that is not an option. Might look into that Autokraft pan next. T

I ask myself who would want a sleek European car that is light and handles and put way to much American horsepower in it? Holy crap I would and why the hell didn't I think of doing a swap like this? Great project.

Are the 928s made out of stainless steel? I don't know why I think this...

Andrew

77tony
02-23-2013, 11:11 AM
Front fenders, hood, & doors are aluminum. Roof, hatch & rear quarters are galvanized steel. These older 928's (1978-1984) weigh approx 3175lbs. The LS3 motor is approx 150lbs less that the stock motor it replaces, and the C5 tq tube, trans/diff is approx 50lbs more than Porsche set up. Just Peachy should weigh approx 3075lbs when finished. T

wow this is cool!! that engine really feels up that engine bay

77tony
02-23-2013, 06:39 PM
Thanks Randall. The physical dimesnions of the LS motor are actually smaller (especially up top) than the dual overhead cam motor that it's replacing. Also will have 525 vs 219 h.p. with approx 150lbs less weight. Will now be able to get to the sparkplugs & exhaust manifolds from above with plenty of clearance. Got to love modern technology. T

Thanks for the link. The drama on the rennlist forum is pretty amusing. It reminded me of the backlash from the RX7 guys when people started dropping LSx engines in them, almost 10 years ago. I've always loved the 928.

Are there certain years of 928s that are better than others? I assume newer cars have improved brakes etc...

Andrew

77tony
02-25-2013, 08:17 AM
Yeah, the drama does get a little deep over there at times. The 86.5+ with vin ending in 1001 or higher have the bigger S4 brakes all around. Like other cars, low mileage, well maintained cars will be more. The higher h.p. 80-86 Euro "S" models will be more $$, the 87-92 GT's are normally $$$ and the 93-95 GTS's usually fetch $$$$. If swapping in a LS/T56, you can pick up a 78-91 non-runner for little $ Much of the 928 is aluminum re: doors, hood, front fenders and the rear qtrs. are galvanized steel, so mostly are rust free. If any rust is to be found, it's on the lower rear qtr windows and lower hatch. T

Had this other project going on at the same time. It's called Just Beachy. A 94 928 GTS that was just completed. Redone interior that included a rear seat delete, almost new 997 sport seats, custom sound system, new carpet, etc. Deleted the side rub strips, sunroof, rear wiper, side marker lights, front headlight squirters, exterior door locks, US bumperettes. I am interested to know how the oval tubing works for you. I have spintechs on my truck and love them, they have held up very well over the past 11 years and the sound is perfect. I most likely will go spintech on my build if anything for the sound and the extra ground clearance with the oval tubing.

With Herman doing his best as a temporary human exhaust hanger and with Dinsdale at the wheel, we completed three quick tests for sound comparison. The 3 video's are with stock LS exhaust manifolds with built a built in O2 sensor per side. Custom made downpipes are fed into a single high flow magnaflow cat. 1st video was with no muffler for a base sound comparison. 2nd video below was the Spintech Sportsman 300 Series muffler, and the 3rd clip was a Magnaflow muffler (not sure of the part #). The 3 of us all agreed on the magnaflow muffler. Our opionions were that the spintech did not offer quite enough sound reduction for the street, and the Magnaflow got the thumbs up from the 3 of us. Tony,

That has to be one of the nicest 928s around, regardless of engine. To me, this is clearly a pro-touring build -- taking a classic chassis and upgrading it with modern driveline components to exceed the stock performance of the vehicle!

I can't wait to see more pictures once you get the front jacked down 3 inches.

On a slightly more critical note, I don't know that I am feeling the yellow calipers with the gold. I think red or black would be better, but that's just personal taste.

Can you post some detailed pictures of the t56 transaxle installed?

Andrew

77tony
11-13-2013, 08:16 AM
Thank you Andrew. 928's require that the ride height, camber & alignment be adjusted when all four wheels are down. Will make the final adjustments and take more pics after the 4 post lift is in. Took a few pics this morning with more available sunlight. Red or black calipers would look good, but felt the yellow looks even better :6gears: T

Wow, I've always loved 928's. When I was a kid, in the late 80's I worked at a parking lot, and every Saturday a lady would come in with a dark brown 928, we use to drool over that car. Good thing we didn't have camera phones back then.....

77tony
03-15-2014, 06:17 PM
Thanks Dave B. Adjusted the ride height, cast & camber and then aligned. Now rides and handles like a dream. Adjusted the doors to rid of wind noise, installed a new w/wash pump, swapped out the break in oil, installed some new lenses for the euro driving, fog and H4 lights, then took her for a rip. Wife says she can here it from a block away. Might need to add a mid-muffler or resonator. T

Had a tear in one of the front seat cushion and found out this particular fabric is NLA. Decided to patch the front seat with fabric from the rear seat. Rear seats were a bit useless anyways, so decided to do a rear seat delete and then installed a 10" sub, 3 channel amp and focal components in the front doors. Picked up some used Mazda RX7 rear cabinets and integrated them in. Deleted the pusher style condenser fan that was up front and had the tuner reprogram the spal dual fans to take up the slack. Now there is room for a custom intake that's next on the list. T

Thank you Andrew. Split the cost of some corner balancing scales with a bud. Baseline was only 3083 lbs. (no occupants) Appears the aluminum doors, hood, and front fenders that Porsche put in there were a big help. T

Ran great a few day ago and now it barely runs:

Checked the fuel pump fuse and relay and it's all good. Swapped in a new MAF sensor and that made no difference. Any clues on where I should go next ? TIA Tony

Sounds like it went into limp mode. Is it throwing any codes? Refresh my memory on the ECU and harness. Probably shouldn't poke the TB like that...LOL

Didn't think of that-h duh. I'll plug the Wi-Fi dongle into the OB port tomorrow to see if she throws up a code or two on the Torque App. Your Cougar looks great running down the track, nice job  T

Tony,

That seems like a lot of codes. Can you elaborate on what happened? You said fine one day then all of a sudden not fine?

Have you tried clearing the codes and seeing what happens?

Purchased a new TB/TPS from Amazon for only $ 126, installed today and JP is running great again. A few months back, the battery ground strap nut worked it's way loose and popped the fan relay. Upon further review, determined that this ground fault surge also burnt the pin and plastic board behind the fan relay causing both fans to run full time (even with the AC compressor off). Looks like a new board fuse/relay board is in order. Does anyone have one for sale or know the part # for the fuse/relay board below ? Will post over on the PT electrical & wiring forum. TIA T

Tony,

You don't have to change that whole board. I believe the that board uses MetriPack 280 series terminals. You should be able to source some and replace the parts that got damaged.

Hi Andrew, Board is brittle behind the fan relay and is a bit deformed and terminal is toast. Think I should replace the board. T

I guess if it is fried badly that would be a good idea. I would give GMPP a call and see if they can help with the part. I heard it is from an Astro van, but I am not 100% sure.

Tony,

Get in touch with John Parsons. I know he has done a few of Infinity installs and loves them.

One of the new wiring harness's fabricated by Carl & Stan along with cleaning up the 14 pin connector. Circular connectors installed on InfinityBox junction (inside to outside) and the 14-pin connector side is done and will connect to stock 928 harness that remains for the central warning computer etc. Spare orange and yellow wires are outputs from the I-Box inMotion kit that are not being used and will be sealed. Thanks Dave^^the wiring wizardry is being handled by my bud Carl. Sourced a later model digi-dash cluster and an early 89 combo switch (no airbag) to control it all, then filled with LED's. Need to black out the Auto selects being this car is a 6 sp manual. A Protizomo LED dimmer was fitted behind the dead pedal along with a Dakota Dig cruise control interface. A 3D custom subpanel will be concealed on top of the tunnel in the center console for easy access from the footwell side panels. Thats it for now. T
