I feel fairly certain that with very minor mods, an 18 x 10 and 18 x9 rim can be used with 285/40s and 255/40s. By minor mods I mean a little shaping of the inner housing and possibly rolling the outer lip.

The optimal backspacing appears to be about 6.0 on the 10s and 5.5 on the 9s. Does anyone have any experience or observations that can shed new light or verify if this correct?

I am going to try and run an 18x10 295/35-18 combo on the back of my 68 coupe with rolled lips. You should be able to get at least the same since the 69/70 has a little more room than the 67/68.

That will be the widest I've ever seen on a 67/68. I'm anxious to see if you can pull it off.

What do you figure your backspacing needs to be?

The rear wheels will have +22 offset or 6.36" back spacing.

I just sold the 17" Cobra R's that were on the car. This makes for the third set of wheels I have bought for this car during its build. First were 16" Ronal R9's that would not work with the 13" Baers. Then the Cobra R's and finally now a set of black FR500's. I bought the R's back when they were the sheeyacht, but now that I am about to finish (finally) this car they are played out to the max.

The Cobra rears were 17x9 +24 (5.94") with a 275/40 tire. This setup fit without any spacer but was too far sunk inside the wheel-well so I had a 3/4" spacer to push the wheels where it looked better. With the 3/4" spacer I had 1.5" between the inside of the tire and the leaf spring.

With the 18x10 and no spacer the outside of the 18" tire will be inset .16" further than the R's did. And at this position I should have .32" between the inside of the tire and the leaf spring. It should fit like a friggin glove! If not then I will have to change to a 285 tire.

On the front I am limited to an 8" wheel so a 245 tire is the biggest I can run. Anyhting bigger on the front and the wheel lip hits the upper CA.

That's pretty cool that you're pushing the limits like that. I've heard some say that an inch or so between the leaf springs and the tire is needed for clearance. For instance, when entering a driveway on a hill. What say you?

I have mabey 1/8" clearance on my car at the most in certain spots and it only rubs once in a while turning into really sharp driveways. I say you could get away with 1/2" with no problem. So far it has NEVER rubbed even in the hardest cornering.
BTW I love when he posts the pics of that Mustang. I dont know how many times I have started at that first pic. :worship:

I have a 70 Mach with a 18x10.5 with a 295 on the rear with no problems. Just the minor mods you want to do is what i have done. The car is at the paint shop right now will get you some pics later when I get a chance.

Excellent! You must have about 6.5" backspacing?

Also, do you think you could you stuff a 315 in there?

Lincoln Versailles rear end which is about a inch shorter than the mustang. The back spacing is 5.5. By the way the pics of that silver 69 stang that keeps showing up has the same set up even before the air ride was installed. If you can find the december 04 Mustangs and Fords it shows the 69 with 315s on it. But he did take them off shortly after because they would rub slighty and went back to 295s.

I've been seeing pictures of the silver Mach in lots of publications lately. The stance and tire size look about as perfect as I've seen on a 69/70.

Here's a website with tire and wheel charts for Mustangs. It's broken up by model years, and it's a compilation of what people actually have on their cars along with any suspension/body mods they've done. Hopefully this may help some of you guys out:

Wow, that's a very impressive setup! I was hoping I could get a 17X10 with a 275-295 tire in the back, but the biggest I've seen on one of the 69/70 cars is 18X9.5 so far. The wheels I'm looking at come in 17X8 and 17X10, or 18X9 but I really don't like how 18's look. They made no 17X9's. I'm glad to hear it sounds like I can go with the 10's!

Dont think the 17x10's will work - the above posts are referring to a 18x10.... 17's will hit.

**EDIT -- My bad.. I thought he was looking to fit a 315 underthere.

Wouldn't the only difference be that the 17s would be a little shorter and therefore actually fit better?

Hit what? There's a car on the tire & wheel chart with 17X9.5's, it's not like the front suspension where you have to get over ball joints and such. A 18X10 is no wider.

I was told that with a 315 17x10 would not fit.
