Thought this might interest some of you. Enjoy.
Here's the CNN story.... (http://www.cnn.com/2005/AUTOS/07/29/new_gto/index.html)
It'll be interesting to see what they come up with if this does happen. I'm not so sure about eh 4 doors with a coupe profile though.

Any details of the car reported in the news media, beyond the mere fact that is being worked on, are "pure conjecture," Hopson told CNN/Money.
I doubt it's going to be a four door.

Hopefully it would look more like an RX8 or Saturn ION type four door coupe vs. a sedan, but I doubt it. Heck, as long as it's as boring as the current version it may as well have 4 doors, it would at least be a little more usefull to a broader range of buyers. And no entry level "Tempest" versions? The 04-05 Goat had failure written all over it, even back at the 03 car shows when I saw it.
The '05 Mustang show car was surrounded so tightly that I only got a few quick snips of it in pics, a quarter panel here, a seat there, a wheel perhaps. I had tons of full on shots of the GTO. The funniest thing??? I asked a GM engineer why they didn't do a little more retro styling before introducing the new 04 GTO. Know what he said? "We want to move forward with designing excitement, rather than looking to the past." I laughed out loud and said "You're bringing back a 30+ year old Pontiac name plate, slapping it on a barely tweeked 4-5 year old already outdated Autrailian platform, and that's moving forward?!?!?!" Good times...

IMO the current GTO is spectacular. Recalling the original that wasn't much to look at either and kinda blended in with the Tempests and a number of similar GM cars but to those in the know.....a bad a$$ machine. The current car duplicates that pretty well. Subtle, nothing flashy, not a great deal to make it look a whole lot different from any number of other cars.....except for that 400hp under the hood.
On the subject of the Dodge's.......anyone else notice how skinny the tires are on all of the Chargers and Magnums? Nice looking 17-18" rims, but big freakin deal if you are only putting a 235 on them.

I'm okay with a 4 door coupe. I already have my share of impractical vehicles.

And I agree the current GTO is cool--especially having seen the many customized versions at SEMA last year. We're hot rodders. Half the fun is taking something ordinary and making it better.

One can sure tell the age differences with this group by their opinions of four door vehicles. The majority of hotrodders in my age group would never be caught dead building or modifying one. Go to a streetrod gathering or a musclecar gathering and tell me where all the four doors are & how plentiful they aren't.
Four door high performance cars are the dumbing down of our times.

A 4-Door sports car , in my opinion , is not a sports car.
Kinda the same as saying a 4-door chevelle , nova , or bel-air looks good...
Just my 2cents.....

I don't think 4-door high performance cars are dumbing anythign down. Now if they started making 4-door Mustangs and a new Camaro with 4-doors was produced - then I'd agree with you. I think there's a place or niche for everything. I don't remember the 1996 Impala SS being a car that nobody liked. That's a sweet ride IMO. As long as the car makers produce 2-door performance cars for the guys who want them I don't see any problems with producing 4-door performance cars either. There's definately a market there for them. I think it'd been cooler to have made the Charger a 2 door but I think that car has more "styling issues" than just that it has 4 doors. But again that's just my opinion.

not so much. one of these took down a lamborghini Murcielago on a race track on top gear. I'd call it a sports car.

What is this world coming to, 4 door sports cars? Not right. Touring car, yes. Sporty, no. Four doors means it's a family car to me. What's next, a 4 door Camaro?
Someone must have forgot that sports cars don't have to be practical. This "one car does all" trend is rather annoying. I don't want a heavy, bulky, long car that I have to muscle around turns. The auto companies can keep their 2nd set of doors, thank you very much!

No offense,Tony, but that car is butt ugly. I don't care how fast something is,,if it looks like a turd,it's still a turd. Fast or not.
FWIW,imagine if the 94-96 Impala SS's had been available in either two or four doors. Honestly, what would you have picked? I'm not a foreign car lover by any stretch but at least there are more two doors available.

Well....it'll depend on how well the Charger does. If Dodge starts selling a ton of them, then GM would have to look at a 4 door option to compete with it. If GTO is in the right place at the right time and we feel we can do a sedan design scheme to rival Charger and get it to market quickly...it might be a wise move on our part. I'm not saying that we would definitely do it, but we'd definitely take a look at it. Again, this would all depend on how Charger does. If the public will buy a 4 door sports car with an iconic nameplate...then they'll buy a 4 door GTO thus giving us a piece of that market.
Hey, what can I say? We're in the business of selling cars, brother.

Very true, what sells, sells. I'd just be sad to see it. It's not even the nameplate that would bother me, it's the fact that nobody makes anything I want to buy anymore.

Wait until you guys see the pic of the GTO that I saw at 2 of the 4 car shows last weekend. Absolutely awesome! Most impressive new one I have seen so far. Ive been so busy this week I havent posted them yet. :slap:
I took a 2004 out for a ride last night. It was our insurance sales reps GTO. It was a fun little car, just needed a lot more power. :drive1:

What do you call cars like the Mercedes E55 AMG, S55 AMG, M5, STS-V, CTS-V, Audi S6R ? Those cars would all destroy mustangs and camaros, and a ton of other 2 door cars. Touring car? No! Those are plain sports cars!

They're sports cars, but...exotic sports cars. Is any car on that list under $50K? Those cars cost 2, 3, 4+ times as much as Camaros and Mustangs. Sure they'd destroy 'em stock for stock, but give me $25K well spent in any LS1 4th gen and we'll go exotic hunting. :3gears:
I wouldn't mind a CTS-V, though...
I'm not much of a fan of 4 door cars, everything I own has two doors (camaro, camaro, tahoe). Although, the Chevy SS concenpt a while back did look pretty cool even though it was a 4 door.

Sports cars only have two doors and two seats. When I think of a sports car,I think of a Corvette,Viper,AC Cobra,Porsche Carrera, etc.
No such animal as a four door sports car,IMO.

Well I think I can see your point on a pure "sports car" being defined as a two place (Although Enzo Ferrari identified the Jeep as America's only real sports car). Do you s'pose we could all come to agreement in calling a high perfomance 2+2 Coupe a GT?
Gran Turismo, as defined by the italians is exactly that.....sounds like a Camaro to me no?

I saw this one awhile ago over on ultimategto.com. Its just a concept a guy drew. I think it deffifnetly rivals the mustang in what both are trying to accomplish in design, new yet still that old styling.

Trapin,
any chance of a car looking like this? It would be sitting in my garage the day it came out (if it held a car seat) :)

It's a nice looking design for sure.
However...you have a 'buildability' issue with that car right off the bat. Those fenders would be costly to produce in the stamping plant. Building tools like that costs a substantial amount more than it did back in the 60's. That would add considerable cost to the car. You would either have to get creative in regards to Die Pull Direction and Die Angle or you'd have to break the fender up into several pieces and get creative with your panel gaps.

im sure it could be reworked a bit to be "conciveable" and still retain the same concept. The main point here is it "looks" like a 60's gto and you can tell by looking at it, yet it looks modern. Yeah i know it would get crap from copying the mustang, but with the motor they put in the gto, i wouldnt care as i took off from the light and waved bye-bye.

I wouldn't mind a CTS-V, though... …and at Pontiac prices. Sign me up. A place to put the baby seats!
An M5 is a 4 door. I’d take one of those for an everyday car as well. If I wanted a second mortgage :)
(nice place you got here)
I don't know the side picture of that concept looks like one of those 80's BMW's with a kit on it i think they were 318's or something like that?
