Love the car Scott. With your C5/6 subframe, do the upper control arms mount with the bowties or dogbones through the bushing of the arm or do you weld tabs and a bolt goes straight through the bushings? I bought two front knees that are C5 arms and I didn't get the UCA bowties (that is what I have heard them called). Looking forward to placing my order this month.

10-01-2012, 10:18 AM
lol, maybe not slicks, but you will go through a set of tires in 2 or 3 events road racing. I hate using up my street tires doing that, so I swap 'em out. The other thing that happens is that most of the time my brakes get hot enough to melt the adhesive on my balance weights. Not only do the weights fall off, but they scratch up my calipers while they are falling off. So I run track wheels without balancing them.

Anyway, most guys who hook a trailer to their cars use 'em mostly for wheels and tires.

Hey Scott, great project.
I've been following along with your builds for a little while. I'm up in Canada, not too far from Albert. I love the Firebird you built for him.
The winter is coming here soon so I'm going to take my 69 Camaro off the road and start on my winter projects.

I'm going to build my own front subframe also, the last 69 I built back in 2000 I did a C4 front and rear, I'm doing C6 on this one.

What width did you have to go on the front to get the 335's to fit in there? WMF to WMF.
What rack did you end up using? I'm looking at my options now. I need to finish with the measurements, get them in my suspension program and see what width I need.
I'm guessing it's going to be the narrow one offered by DSE.

Sorry for rambling so much.

Keith Quinn.

I saw your posting/question and would as a result understand you have ability to fabricate,, and that is a part of the equation however it does not complete the overall needs to an end result as evidenced in your inquiry regarding dimensions...... Keith with all respect intended Scott has developed these sub-frames with a ""great deal of time and expense to himself"". To ask him to merely hand off all of this information and effort for free is some what unrealistic to say the least.... If you're looking to own a sub-frame with his associated intellectual property I'd suggest you e-mail Scott and ask to purchase one... When the community supports this type development/research of parts by way of showing the developers some kind of ROI,, they are likely to continue stretching the envelop with improved new parts we can all enjoy.....

I have done all the R&D to build a F-body(1st. or 2nd Gen) sub frame that will take 335's. up front.I have the crossmember, steering ,header's,LS motor mount's,Frame rail width, iner fender's,all finished. But since I am working on a chevelle right now,I have desided to wait until the chevelle is finished before I start putting everything togather.I going to test the driveabilty of my work on the chevelle first. At this time I wish not to share any of the R&D info I so far.( My sub frames are not a copy of AME's) I did have an AME in my 69 sunoco camaro,it came as part of the camaro &parts. But by the time I ran it at Optima,I had changed the sway bar, steering rack, steering arm length, frame width, upper shock mount's,trans mount, motor mount's,upper a-arm mounts(just about the whole thing). In fact I have been build my own frame's(using either stock F-body,C-4,C-6,Rayburn geomtry. since 2002.Thanks Scott.

While I don't have the necessary skills myself to fabricate a C6 sub on the front of my 66, I've love to see some pics of how you did it if it won't share too many secrets. I've never thought of doing it that way, but this appears to be a viable option rather than swapping to a RS or similar aftermarket frame.

KerryKerry,As soon as I get the chassis sandblasted & powder coated I will post up some photos of the bare frame.Had it been within my budget I would have stepped up and went with a RS Chassis & IRS.But it wasn't,so I opped to graft in one of my C-6 camaro clips.I will be glad to discuss how I did it once I get some pictures of the bare frame.I am just not willing to give out measurements for building a c-6 clip for 335 tires.thanks Scott.

Scott, How close is the Chevelle frame to the 80s G body (Monte) frame?Scot,I have no Idea. What I did w/my 66 chevelle frame was to weld it to a table made of 3x3 sq tube. Then I jigged of the frt bumper/body mounts. Then I cut the chassis off before it turned to come forward. Then I fabricated a weld in clip, and kept going from there.I didnt take a lot of photos until I started fittin it to the body.Once I get the chassis back from the powder coater I can post up photos so you can see how I did it.Or Call me @the shop one,seven85-594seven 48one.

Also are you doing the z06 rear brakes as well? and what about a parking brake? I am trying to set up something similar except i have a full floater rear so I need to use bolt of brake rotor rings

Looks awesome Scott! That thing is going to be wicked cool with that tire combo!Thank's Tom.Can't wait to hang w/you and the famliy and park next to each other.

I really like the way you are using some home made engineering. I'm sure there will be a nice market for your front clips as there is no one that I know of doing this for A-bodies...SubscribedThank's,as soon as thing's slow down will start working on a frt clip jig.

Looks great. Are there production headers that will work or did you have to fab those too?No production header's fit the narrowed clip.I have some that will fit the std. width clip.
