I'm searching for headers to fit my 69 Camaro that I mistakenly thought would be relatively simple......Not!

-Small block (355)

-AFR 190 heads with standard height D-ports

-Saginaw 700 series box

-Manual clutch linkage

-T56 Mag w/ Quicktime bellhousing

-Wilwood manual master

-No AC

-Solid Moroso mounts

-Original SS car with floor shift auto, steering lock removed.

Previous set-up before the new heads with factory 202 heads:

I've talked with tech at Summit, Hedman, Doug's, Hooker, and Sanderson and received elusive answers.

I'd prefer ceramic coat with 1/4 or 5/16" flanges 1-5/8 - 1-3/4" tubes.

Regretfully stainless doesn't fit the current budget.

The D-port and power steering box appear to be a major issue.

Has anyone been down this road before that may have a real-world solution?

Thanks,
Scott

I had a set of Hooker Super Comps 1 3/4" on my 408 (Dart Pro 1's) for a while, but had to dent the heck out of the pipe to clear the steering box. I ended up taking them off and went with a cheap set of Dynomax 1 5/8". Plenty of room.

I've requested from the tech's at Doug's and Hedman to supply pictures or drawings of the Saginaw 825 steering gear that all the manufacturers say their headers won't work with.

I'd like to use Doug's 368 with rectangular flange ports and 1-3/4" tubes............unless I have to be beat a $640 header flat to fit.

The Dynatech steppers these are the best fitting when used with the 600 series boxes. Coated and a few tube size options. The only issue I have found was when using with a 168 toth flywheel you can't run a stock style starter.

Price is decent at $585 through Summit.

Just spoke with Dynatech tech for confirmation and everything was good until I mentioned 168 tooth flywheel. He no it won't fit even with a mini starter.
Inquiring with Doug's now as I'm running out of choices.

My Mr. Gasket's work with the stock starter but it is tight.

Thanks guys, don't doubt it and wish I had the budget but $1,800 is not an option right now.
Doug's 368 look like the best guess at this point. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DOU-D368/

FWIW - I email tech departments at Hedman, Doug's, Sanderson, Dynatech, and Summit with a picture of my Saginaw 700 box and requested pictures or drawings of the Saginaw 825 steering gear they all reference. No one could identify it. ???

Went with Doug's 1-3/4" model 368........fingers crossed.

Why not go to a local shop and have headers made custom? Slip fit tubes. $800-$1000 depending on size. And no hammering anything

Plus ceramic coating. Also no local affordable builders in this area and there's a timeline involved.

I'm running Dynatech headers with 168 tooth flywheel and stock style starter with no issue. To do that, I simply cut the flange off of an old set of headers I had lying around and used that as a spacer between the right header and head. I have not had any problems in 3000 miles.

Did you look at patriot headers, they sell a clipster style header not shorties, but not long tubes, they are heavy duty construction and a low price. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PTE-H8021-1/

How did the Doug's D368 workout? I have 69 with 355, 4speed, stock steering box, with stock A/C and want to install headers but worried about Z arm clearances, box and everything else mentioned that are obstacles on a 69 Camaro.

Hooker released some new SB headers for 1st-gen F-body cars last year and the were designed for compatibility with all the components you listed. You can preview them on the Holley website by searching for part numbers 2104HKR, 2105HKR, 2106HKR, 2107HKR and 2109HKR.

I was also told that the Dynatech headers will not work with any 168 tooth starter. In point of fact they will not work with a full size 168 tooth starter without using a spacer to move the header away from the head. Now I have a GM Performance mini-starter on a SBC and it works just fine with minimal grinding to the lower outboard corner of the starter mount block for clearance but it was really very minor. Once you get past the starter issue, the Dynatech are really nice headers.
