I picked up a 4L80E today off of craigslist. Typical "came out of a running truck" ad, but I am definitely going to have it rebuilt. I talked to a transmission shop today and told him that it would be going behind a 370 w/ LS3 topend and he recommended I pick up one of the performance kits off of the net and he would do the labor part of it. Have any of you had good/bad experiences with a transmission rebuild kit. Any recommendations on kits, convertors, etc. I don't know a lot about transmissions so I am open to your thoughts.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Monster in a Box type package to take to my builder. I already have the core and he told me he was happy to do the assembly with my own choice of parts. I am just going to have to figure out which parts. Has anybody built up a 4L80E and used a certain part or made a certain mod that they would definitely do again or that wasn't worth the money?

I would ask jakes performance (940) 488-1018. They would know what you need.

Call Rodney @ RPM Transmissions. They mod them up to level 5 or 6 I believe.

I talk to a lot of people each day and this seems to be a growing trend. Since 4L80E's are pretty good out of the gate folks are picking up good 4L80E cores and then having them freshened locally plus a shift kit. It's can help save money for the other pieces of the puzzle such as a good converter and TCM.
We caution against using an 80 without freshening and a shift kit as they tend to shift dead soft regardless of how much pressure is dialed in on the TCM. Even though that stock trans might very well last, it probably will not be fun to drive. Tell your shop to set things up on the firm side. It's possible to tune down pressures electronically, but mechanical pressure needs to be present. For a pro-touring car, ask for shifts that are quick but not harsh.
The wrong converter will also ruin the driving experience. We are way proud of our MuscleDrive billet converters. I don't think anyone can supply a better pro-touring converter.
Feel free to call and pick my brain

I buy all my auto trans rebuild kits from Dana at pro built automatics. He has complete rebuild kits with quality parts for great prices. He will also add or delete parts in his packages if needed.
For converters I have used a local converter shop for years for my drag cars and they have been great. After they recommended a 4000 stall for my pro tour build I decided to try another company. I am going to go with a converter from Stevo at twist machine as well as a paddle set up from them.

Good input guys. Down the road I would like to add a Shrifter, I didn't know Twist was offering torque converters now so when it is on deck for a rebuild, I will call and price/spec out a converter from Twist.

I will have to look at the Monster stuff again. I am likely going to wind up with a kit that is a little bit better than stock and a shift kit. These things have lived behind some pretty torquey engines in stock form under load, but while it is out, I will have it freshened up. I haven't found a lot of information out there about any particular weak spots for the 4L80e's.

No, we work exclusively with Pro Torque.. And we're happier than a hair band in an Aqua Net factory.

Great thread, I have also been wondering how the 4l80e is going to hold up behind my setup. Figured it should work good but def want to get it in & drive it before I go all out & make changes
