Just ordered my TCI torque arm rear suspension for my project and looking to install front steer rack set up most of what I have seen I did not like this one looks like it might work well. Has anyone installed this setup and if so how well did it work? It`s from smith racecraft you remove a portion of the front sub frame brace and install the bracket angle on the steering shaft looks pretty good as well. Here`s is the link to the install instructions. Or has someone seen something better? Not looking to replace my sub frame as it is not in my budget!http://srdparts.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=8:instructions-rack-and-pinion-kit&catid=6:uncategorized

That only looks to be a manual rack kit. Any reason you want to install rack and pinion over a good power steering box?

Here are some questions that you may want to ask any provider of a steering system...

What is the bump steer curve?
Does this system provide as much turning radius as my oem box?
What was the original vehicle that the rack was designed for? Will it be strong enough to turn the wide front tires on my heavy car?
How heavy are the mounting brackets? Heavy front ends and wide tires impose a huge load on a steering system.

This is the second most important system on your car besides the brakes. Your life (and maybe mine) depends on it.

Save yourself a lot of trouble and a bunch of money... Get a good, quick ratio steering box for your existing system. You will be much better off.

x3. I've worked with some of those rack kits... you're better off with replacement box. Have a look around here; search for "Camaro steering box"

I have said it before, under no circumstance does it make sense financially OR functionally to use an aftermarket "kit" to adapt a rack to an existing suspension setup. The compromises (header and steering linkage clearance, ground clearance, and geometry) are many and the gains (you get to say you have a rack) are few.

There are just too many good steering boxes that are simple to install and far more cost effective. DSE, LEE, AGR, or even a junkyard Jeep Cherokee box are ALL better choices than anyones rack kit.

Speed Direct makes a great direct bolt on rack-n-pinion for first gen's. I've had mine on my car sice 2000 and so far so good. The weight savings, extra clearance given, and steering response is well worth the money spent.
