Finally getting around to making my enderlie style air intake & fiberglass/ aluminum engine bay cover. Long ways to go yet. Intake is 100% hand fabbed & will have 4 red butterflies.

I'll be prettying up the hood hinges as well soon, drilling & chamfering holes, sanding & polishing, etc.
And before anybody asks, yes it has an air cleaner.

More pics in photobucket link & you tube link. For anyone not registered here that can't use the links, google joe's camaro nose el camino. It will link you to many threads about it, many of which were full of insults from people who probably couldn't change their own oil.
As you can see in 1 photobucket picture, this is an actual camaro ss nose I purchased in oct 09' from recycling place, slightly damaged. Project was a severe pain, had to learn to weld & fabricate with TEO plastic. Removed 3" from center & made MORE pointed than factory version. Made the upper fascia into my hood with a real snorkel opening instead of the fake mailslot. Have yet to hear of anyone else doing a conversion like this or a hood opening like mine. ?? Headlights were 100% handmade with sylvania glass projectors from a junkyard Daewoo, There were no used parts available in oct 09" like there are now. I need to get back to work on improving the hood mehanism. I,ve been on my own for ideas-can't find anything else with the same movement.

Agreed,it's just a money thing right now. Most people have no idea how low my budget has been last few years. I do have 2 cans of plasti dip to sample on the wheels for now & possibly that outdated silver lower section till I custom make ground effects that look like extended rockers.

JL, Im a big fan of the front end conversion, but thats were it ends, you need to clean it up.The back screams redneck hurst with a touch of starwars hahahahahah,
1.Paint the bottom half of the car black like the rest
2.Get rid of the medevil theme
4.remove the back bumper and put a roll pan in it
5.remove the trans am wing or cover in the back, looks like a roll up camper
6. Get rid of those trucker rims and slap on some stock chevy 2010 camaro rims

Some people around here don,t know when to apply brakes, so I ain't gettin no rollpan, will be doing a different bumper later though. As anyone who bothers to read may have noticed, I will be getting rid of the silver when new ground effects are made & might just plasti dip the wheels black till I can afford others.
Knew I shouda stuck to pics of most recent mods. Payback is hell getting picked on by someone with flowers under their hood.

You got it. One thing different with my ride than many other older models is that it never was a total ground up build & where many have rust, dents, primer, etc, I have silver stripes, cragar wheels, past hobbies etc.The new stuff puts the old stuff out of style. The worst part right now is once again most of what I got saved up for it got spent on the house($6500 ac system). I can fabricate metal & fiberglass on a low budget like no one else, but that doesn't buy things like suitable wheels & airride.
Today was looking more into making custom lower body to resemble new camaro's & be painted BLACK. How's that sound?
Was the handmade forward mounted bugcatcher scoop a good idea or is it bad too?
All in good fun...

Thanks for the pic, saved to my computer.I,m SICK of that silver honestly, Almost payed maaco to black it out before a recent show till I make my lower changes. I will also later be removing the doorhandles & making flushmount ones at the top of the door. Also filling gas door & molding in bed trim. Possibly filling in quarter windows also when I shave driprails .
I've toyed with the idea of camaro taillights for a while now, down low they look alot like the 73-77' el camino's. However I insist on having rear protection of a steel bumper. Never was really happy with my half Nova bumper though. The custom tailgate probably would sell easy enough & pay for a flush skin for another one.
However the aluminum cover, which others have said looks better in person , has that extra height to carry stuff (dry & locked up) when needed. This is my only personal work truck. I do want to adjust the profile of the kick up on the very rear of the cover to make it look a little better.

There is one thing NOW I need a little opinion deciding on.Getting rid of the bolt on ground effects & making the lower body wider to blend with front. I know for sure I want the lowest portion of the body to have the profile of the new camaros without ground effects. The part I need to decide is do I want to go through all the trouble to get the look of the angle portion of the lower camaro doors. I could make new metal up to the lower el camino body line & flare out less at rear of door & quarter panel toget some of this look. OR I could just make something straight across from front to rear which would be much simpler. Opinions? Thanks

Trans
10-11-2012, 05:16 PM
I think that the lower body line on the el camino as it is right now would be good enough if you just paint it black but im saying that because i cant really see a big difference between the front bumper lower lip and the side of the el camino now due to the pictures. If there is a big difference just figure out a way to mount camaro sideskirts on the car,but then you would have to ad to the back as well so I would leave it as is.Im sorry mate but the bed cover you have on defaces the rear end.If you must have a cover get at least a cover that sits flush with the bed line even if you sacrifice 1 foot of head room.

Theres just so many thing to change including the hideous interior,I wish you would have done the front end conversion and then put it up for sale so that i could have bought it and did the interior my way as well as the rest of the cosmetics lol

jlcustomz
10-11-2012, 06:01 PM
When I did the nose conversion I lined the heights up with the ground effects, which is part of what made the conversion look like somebody's kit. It's partly a width issue , I flared the front lower portion of the factory fenders out to make things look right. The other part of my issue with the existing ground effects is the poor quality & fit. I want something to look more like the factory shaped it modernly rather than an add on of ricer quality. I'll probably just shape the top straight.
By the way, the interior & other things that people online don't like came long before the nose did.

I must admit that the concept is appealing and I really think you did a great job on the nose. I don't care much for the intake. But it is not my car.

I see too many cookie cutter first gens with the same bolt on subframes and rear suspension packages with LS/T56 drivetrains.

I like to see someone do something different every once in a while, like a PT Volvo or this El Camino or El Camaro as it may be.

Instead of criticizing what is different, some of us could learn a bit from something that steps outside the box. The best cars, whether PT or not, are always something that has never been done before. We don't have to like everything about a project to appreciate what is good and what is different that could generate ideas we can use.

I just wish I were as good at fabricating so I could take some of the ideas from my head and bring them to life in my car.

I bet when this project is completely done with matching rockers and newer wheels, along with some other finishing touches, it may just be a real sharp ride.

Sometimes we need someone who is willing to take on something completely different to get us out of the "group think" that produces too many cookie cutter projects. Right Vengeance?

Chad that thing looks like something you 'd see in austrailia built by GM's holden division. Take it as a compliment, they have some pretty cool road race cars down there.

As far as camaro tailights in an el camino tailgate, I'd probably have to give the tailgate a bunch of shape to blend with that look & cut off most of the inside housing depth & make something with led's. Just don't see it looking right. Now in the bumper, they look very similar to the 73-77 ' el camino bumper lites. That could be a later possibility.
By the way, most of my rear bumper is from a Nova. It was a first try at a custom bumper. I have a tucked steel el camino bumper I may modify for the rear.

If you're seriously considering doing something that looks like this, I,d start with a fiberglass tucked bumper. Someone if south Fl makes one that has a rolled skirt look similar to the challenger. Then you could cut open the g- body fiberglass front fascia & retrofit headlights to get the look you want. Adjust the front upper edge to look similar to the challenger's, remove the v-shaped peak from the fascia'a leading edge. & make something for a grille.

This would give you a custom look that I,d think would look awesome, but without directly looking like you fit an actual challenger nose to it, you'd just be borrowing some of the coolness from it.
By the way,Approx $300 was justnew camaro parts only . buying a hot air welder& supplies, misc material to make headlights, materials to connect everything, etc, etc, body shop supplies probably put the entire project closer to $1,000. the little crap adds up.

And Mr vengance dude, If you can't tell from the small picture that was a plus size girl, maybe you need to spend more time in closer proximity to women. Just sayin.

I think that you need to elaborate on how you molded the fenders and hood if its the stock hood.Post pics of the fabrication work you did to make the front fit. As far as a chellenger front end,the easiest thing to do would be to probably get the complete front clip and making mounts to mount it then just modify the fenders and hood to match the front clip"s profile.

jlcustomz
10-16-2012, 12:19 PM
Didn't take many pictures during construction, most of this nose construction was done by dec, 09'. This was before my posting online days started.
The factory fenders kept the same up & down profile as original, they were spaced out 3/4" at the battery box mount location, the lower flange was cut off to straighten the lower curvature, then re-flanged
3" approx was cut from center of camaro nose & grilles, then welded back together with a hot air gun & plastic ribbon. On the top, I originally cut around the mailslot to filly retain it. The fender edge of the camaro nose was repeatedly trimmed in spots, while others were filled & extended.. I cut wood forms for each side to heat & reprofile the side curvature of the new nose. These wood forms were then needed to retain the shape while attaching & reinforcing flanges were welded in.
Grilles had to be rewelded in centers. Took the rear section of a regal g-body bumper & attached new metal to the front to hold the crash protection part that supports the new nose.
I decidedto make a rough mold of the upper fascia & make it into the fiberglass hood with a real scoop opening instead of the mail slot. then came about the creation of the lifting hood mechanism after not wanting to use my previous forward tilt hood setup with the pointy nose.
This was a small description of what was involved, it can take a lot of subtle changes to make such a project look right. A nose meant to just bolt up to the exact stock el camino dimensions would never look just right.

If anyone thinks they can get a totally different front & JUST modify a few things to fit, have at it. Show me when you're done.
This is the only other new camaro nose conversion I know of to date.

i cant quite tell from the pics cause lack of angle and relation to the front bumper BUT i think you are headed in the right direction..

the new camaros bumper has a few geometric angles at the bottoms so it could work... just make sure you finish them out, paint them temporary primer black(if you show us sooner than later) then paint it gloss.

I,ve always thought wagons are pretty cool when done up nicely.

As far as Steve Stanfords renderings, They are not truely accurate to the camaro nose dimensions & both the g-body's are drawn with the lower body being wider than stock. Stanford is one of my favorite artists though. I had the idea for the new camaro nose when the concept vehicle first came out, but when I saw Stanfords rendering, I just had to stop what I was working on (interior) &build one. Not everyone likes the nose conversion(mainly guys that paid for an actual new camaro) , but I think it's the best thing I,ve done to date . Now I have to update the rest of the vehicle some to compliment it.

Also to mention, if I were to do a camaro nose conversion with the upper fascia not connected to the hood like mine, I would extend the peak of the hood itself to better compliment the intended look & not look like a made up add on kit.

Yea, I'll be taking most of the lower half of the bumper off.I'm out of practice with plastic work at the moment. Hopefully I can make a wood form for the bottom & rebend most of the lower half to a new height to have less plastic welding to do.

Originally I'd been planning on making a steel bumper from scratch based on the cts-v look, but decided to start with a similar plastic bumper that was close enough to work with.. Was really getting tired of the old custom bumper that I never fully liked anyway.

I think the modern V look will be more appropriate with the rest of the mods & center exhaust should be some appropriate (bling). Will most likely get rid of the round vette light tailgate & modify another one to have a little V-shape with liscence plate opening similar to the CTS-V. Then further down the road I plan to reshape the aluminum bedcover rear section & Maybe add the new c7 vette lites in the cover.

It is constantly referred to as the new Batmobile, so don't expect it to look too traditional.

I'm no good at Photo shop and I have the same feeling about the Batman cape cover, sorta cool but...
What if you made a total bed top cover like a Nomad that match the roof line? It could still hinge and raise but with the Elk roof line being so low it'd still have a clean low look about it.
Overall I like what you've done.

Thanks man, had to go with real steel for the back end of what still sometimes gets used as a truck.

Still wondering what you think of the wrap around tail light concept in the bedcover, deleting the vette lights?? Cutting into the rear bedcover for lights will also allow me to reshape the aluminum cover a little better, reducing some of the droopy clown look the corners have .
Actual tail lights will have to be custom made. Actual shape may be more similar to the Lincoln mark viii, but with shorter corners & all red. Probably sequential led.

Thanks. The 20 gauge stainless plenum idea wasn't so great. The material is too thin to even carefully yack weld a few spots without warpage that I won't be able to remove. Giving up on the thin stainless plenums.

Already bent 2 new plenums from .090 aluminum & partially welded up. I'm now back to the idea of flanges to connect the runners to the plenums. Will need to weld the bellmouths to the runners ,but this will eliminate the 8 upper rubber connectors for a cleaner look.

Throw on a set of BMW Mparallel wheels on there and I BET it would make the look more modern... and they are pretty cheap too

space them out to be flush with the fenders a bit and you got yourself a better side profile.

Oh and forget those back arches.. the fronts dont have enough bump to even the look out..

Yea, the rear will take a lot of work I don't have time for right now to make it look like I planned.

But think of it this way...... It's a black vehicle that's mostly driven at night to local shows. It's fun to get mistaken from the rear as the most expensive new Chevrolet sports car from a distance.

You are building this car for yourself, no one else. The only thing that matters in the end is that YOU are happy. My neighbor and I had a talk the other day. He was mentioning my 66 chevelle isn't a desired year and that I should put so and so engine in it and an automatic trans. I kindly replied, I didn't buy the car to be desired by other people, I bought it for myself. I am building the car how I want it, not how someone else wants it. Wheres the fun in that?

Haven't got much of anything done in over a year. Planning my next bodywork stage which will involve making wide body quarter panels with a raised height, taking the place of the sides of the current 59'chevy shaped bedcover. Bedcover will have the sides cut off & fit between new sides like a trunk lid. figured the shapes of a 69 dodge charger are pretty close. Just simple slightly rounded classic muscle car shapes, nothing stupid. First thought of doing it all steel, now experimenting with making a fiberglass layover quarter panel which could also eliminate the seam between vette bumper & quarter panel.
As it now sits

Back to 1st idea of doing all steel instead of fiberglass overlays.Got a pair of salvage yard quarter panels along with some door skin for extra material last week. Got the upper portion of 2 front fenders in case I want to use them for part of the new top quarter shape. started making wood welding jigs for the quarters to push the wheel wells out 2 3/4" after making 2 vertical slits at ends of wheel wells.
Managed to get the upper portion of a pair of 69 charger quarter panels for $100 from a mopar salvage yard in Starke Fl today.
Pretty sure I'll use them for upper part of new shape.

Little further along. Want a mostly rounded cokebottle shape to the quarters & making vertical slits above the 2 sides & center of the wheel wells made a peaky angular look. Started doing some metal stretching in low areas from backside with plastic teardrop hammer. Made a shrinking disc & started heating & cooling the welded areas & beyond which is evening out the curvature.
typical of metal shaping procedures in this stage, stretched areas have a minor bag of walnuts look & shrunk areas are a little wavy right now. Rather than just hammer & dolly , planning on digging out the English wheel to planish things a bit.
Also adding a sharp corner to the rear similar to the 2016 Camaro nose up front. Upper part of vette bumper will fit between with an 1/8"space & become a tailgate. Lower portion will be all metal up to the lower vette vents.

I keep coming back to this car. If I personally had the opportunity to add another detail, I would incorporate rear fender flares that match and compliment the front. That would also allow you to run a wider rear wheel and tire if desired.

Thanks, If you look at in progress passenger side, rear has stock fender flares same as front. Widening in rear will allow 12 to 13 " wide wheels with stock backset. Rear sheet metal around vette bumpers blends with the angles of the 2016 camaro front. Time, energy , & for things like wheels, money has been the big holdup.
Will at least finish metal work & prime pass side if not completely paint before cutting up drivers side.

I did a little skimcoat of epoxy filler, mostly on front edges on the rear visor & got a couple coats of SPI epoxy on it at work yesterday while I was spraying some on the clock anyway. At least it's sealed off & shiny black now, so I can see what more it may need to make the front edge symmetrical & consistent. Top will have to be bodyworked again anyway , since I'm bonding it to the roof.

Neat looking. I always wanted to do one of these only with a late 80s Cutlass nose. A lot less work, but it would have looked a lot better than the plain-jane nose that came on the Elcam. I actually started one back in the mid-90s, but had some pretty serious money problems that killed it.
