We bought the car in sept. 08 and finally got it in the shop and working on it last week. While it was just sitting we were slowing gathering parts for it.
We are going to do all the work ourselves. The plans for the car is to paint is blue with the bird still on the hood, 6.0l carbed ls motor, overdrive trans, 12 bolt rear end, 17x8 black snowflakes in front and 17x12 snowflakes in rear, disc brakes all around. I just started college so this car is being built on a budget. 636956369063691636926369363694

Nice, project. When it comes to brakes look into the C5 12.8" Front brakes and LS1 12" Rears w/ internal parking brake. They are a great budget friendly brakes swap. I shopped around for a while to get the best deals that I could and I have Under $600 into my whole brake setup! I have yet to install the LS1 Rears, but it is one of the next things on my list of things to do.

Also, If you need any firebird specific parts or help, try transamcountry.com. They are very helpful there.

Got some more work done on the car today. I cleaned the firewall to get ready for paint and got all the interior removed. When we removed the interior we found quite a bit of rust on the passenger side in the floor pans. I guess at 18 its good to know how to weld when building a car. Tomorrow I plan on taking out rear end and starting the mini tubbing process. Its all coming along after the long wait to start

Oh and for got to mention we had taken the sub frame and all front end apart about 6 months ago. We had it all powder coated and all the nuts and bolts refinished. i would post pics of the tear down but lost the pictures we took of it.

I was just going to say keep the FI. You can do a TB to look just like a carb setup.
It will be a sweet car regardless :)

The past few weeks I've gotten some work done on the trans am! I cut out the right side floor pan to fix the rust. I learned to use the welder for the first time while putting the new floor pan in. I also got the dash all taken out to fix some rust in the toe board. I also took apart the ls1 to paint it when we paint the firewall. Its a learning process for me but im trying to do it all by myself with just little help from my dad.

Its been awhile since I've updated just get caught up and forget to. I've got a lot done since the last update. We've got the rear end taken out to put in a 12 bolt. We have also started on the mini tubs, doors taken off, were gonna put the sub frame back on it tomorrow to check and see if the headers we have will clear and work for us. Hoping to have the car back on all four wheels by the end of the month. Can't wait to see what kind of goodies i get for Christmas for her. I'm going to post pictures of what we have done tomorrow after we get done working lol.

Got to work on the Trans Am today. We were going to test fit the engine to see if the headers would work and we found out that we need new motor mount adapters. So we ordered some and hopefully they will be here by next weekend. Well here are some pictures of our progress.

A few questions since i have an 80' bird and i am 18 as well. - I am at the floor stage. The floors in our car are pretty solid except for the passenger front area where your feet go, as well as there is a hole in the toe board/ firewall extension area. I got the replacement pan where your feet go but what did you do for the toe board area? - When doing floors, do you mark up the replacement patch and cut on the inside around to make an over lap weld? Lastly, what gauge steel did you use for the replacement toe area? Otherwise, great job.

I made a template using cardboard to get the size of the hole and then cut it out and transferred it on to the metal the just welded it in flush. As far as the metal size we cut the metal we needed off of a 65 Mustang hood whatever gauge that would be. lol

He butt welded the entire patch panel in first and then repaired the toe board and the firewall. He did a great job welding in the floorpan. This was his first welding experience. If you look up the show muscle car on youtube they replaced a floorpan in an olds. The did the repair the way we have always cut the floorpans out really makes a clean cut for easy butt welding. You cannot tell the pan has been replaced from the bottom.

Its been awhile since I've last posted on here. Well since my last update I've finished up the right mini tub, got rid of the lip on the cowl, and started to smooth the firewall. It's all finally starting to come together. Hopefully by this weekend I will have finished the firewall and maybe the left tub. When we decided that we were going to put a vintage air kit in we bought a dse firewall plate to fill in the holes where the old ac stuff went. since we were already going to be doing work on the firewall I decided to move the wiper motor and wiring harness as well as to get rid of the three big bulges on the firewall. I'll try and keep it more up to date. Well here are some pictures.

We just kind of hammered the lip down and over. Then we welded it all the way across and ground it down.

Here is the start of the smoothing the firewall. We cut out the wiper motor bracket and welded in that hole then we put a piece to fill in the big section where it was once located.

Great job your doing on your TA. When I was your age I had a '78 Trans Am Hurst edition. I'd love to have that car back now so I will watch with much interest and relive part of my youth as you rebuild this car. Enjoy the journey because most of the fun is getting there.

Great looking start here man. I'm loving seeing all the 2nd Gen F-body love here. I'm currently doing a P/T '79 Trans Am build as well.
Glad to see you're going to run the carb as well instead of fuel injection. Carbs are just so much cooler, give you a cooler sound, and just all around more fun. I'm running the stock 403 in mine, with A LOT of goodies, and a big DP carb.

Will be following for sure! Shoot me a message if you have any questions with your car, I started mine when I was 19, I think, and have taken just about every part off these cars.

For A-Arms, I'd recommend calling up Dave at PTFB as someone had suggested. I'm running his front A-Arms.

I have a question I would like some input on from all of y'all. We are going to paint the firewall either body color or black just don't know yet. I'm leaning towards body color which is blue. The ls will be painted the Pontiac blue for the engine, the sub frame, inner finders, and core support are all powder coated black. What color would y'all paint the firewall?

This is the blue I'm thinking about for the car maybe just a little darker.

There isn't a question in there...

Just bustin your balls! It will look busy IMO. Do all black, blue engine and black hoses, harnesses, accy, etc

That would make the engine a "jewel".

Work a little on the car today. I'm almost done with the firewall just a little bit more sanding and then paint. Tomorrow I plan on finishing the left tub. We spun the car around in the shop today and set it about ride height just to see what its going to look like. The front is just a little high. I think its going to look good with the doors and fenders back on.

Did you just cut the wheel tub and move it over to the frame rail and then weld in a strip of metal. i have talked to a guy about doing the same thing. He quoted me the same price for doing that as opposed to using DSE tubs. I may give up a little bit, but I should be able tto fit 315's.

Well this week I got some stuff done on the trans am. I have finally got some primer on the firewall. I will be able to start blocking it this week and just going from there. I also got started on some body work done on the left door. I'm just going to keep going on the car as money will allow. Hopefully in the next week or two I can order a 4 link for it. The next thing to do is after I block the firewall I'm going to put the sub frame back on and make some sub frame connectors.

Good start on the project. Wiper motor placement, while cleans up the firewall, will be a PITA to change or detect problems should they arise. Just saying. They are ugly so I understand your reasoning to hide it, but...

78trans
02-25-2013, 12:24 PM
We are going to put in a new one before the whole car gets put together. it wasnt that hard to make everything fit. We just had to extend the rod that connected the wipers to the wiper motor. To do that we just used a piece of 5/16" steel rod we bought from lowes and bent it to fit the way we needed it to.

So today was a productive day! I finished sanding on the left door, just have to spray primer on it and block. :crying: I also took off the rear bumper, spoilers. deck lid, tail lights and scraped all the gaskets (well what was left) around the rear window and trunk. I just got to keep trucking along little by little and sooner or later the car will be done!

So this past week I've got a lot done on the car. I've started body work on both doors, the deck lid, roof, and both quarters. The doors and deck lid have both been worked and primed. Today I sanded down the roof and quarters to see what was hiding beneath the paint. The car had bondo on both quaters right behinf the doors. It looks like they just used the bondo to "FIX" the dents. So we are going to fix them right this week or weekend. Tomorrow I plan wet sanding the firewall and blocking the doors and deck lid. I hope to have the firewall ready for paint by the weekend. Well photobucket isnt working so no pics yet.

I FINALLY have the firewall painted and just have to color sand it. When that is done I can start putting the car back together and stop taking stuff apart. I'm ready to get it rolling on four wheels. I'm hoping by the end of the month to have the sub frame put together and back on. I just wish I had more money to buy stuff for the car. lol but don't we all!!

Here is the firewall painted! Need to get one of it out in sunlight.

Since my last up date it feels that i haven't gotten anything done on the car to show for. Its been nothing but body work on the car. I now have a new perspective on paint jobs that look flawless. Body work sucks but the end result will be worth the time spent doing it right.

Well I'm still doing body work on the car. I have the deck lid ready to be wet sanded for paint, and the doors need to be blocked 1 maybe 2 more times then they are ready to be wet sanded. Pro-touring For Sale has helped me today!!! Yesterday I sold some shocks and bushings i dont need anymore due to changes in my build. I took that money from those and put it towards some of the cost of the seats I bought today off the For Sale section. Here they are!!

Well here recently its just been bodywork. I almost have the fenders ready for primer. The doors need to be blocked one more time and they will be ready. Yesterday and today I messed around with the firewall. It is color sanded and buffed and I por 15'd the cowl, I also bolted in the sub frame to start putting stuff back on it!

Here is the firewall all done.

More progress has been made! Since my last update I've got my control arms back from the powder coaters, done some more body work on the fenders, set the engine in the car to see how everything would work and fit the ac brackets we had. I've also got the rest of the underside of the car coated with por 15. The 4 link and coil-overs should be here by the end of the week:))) The ac stuff we had didnt work so we ordered an Alan Grove ac comprerssor bracket, need to put it on and see how its going to work. Thats about all that has gotten done here recently. More to come when we get working on putting in the 4 link.

Its been a little over two months since I've posted last. Since my last update we have gotten some work done. The engine is painted and ready to go back in the car, the trans is ready to go in as well, the 4 link is ready to start putting in, the front coil-overs are in.

Engine work- To make the ac compressor be on the bottom of the motor we had to notch the sub frame to allow room for the compressor to fit. We painted the block blue and the heads silver. we thought about leaving the head alone but they just wouldn't pop enough for us. We used the factory cross member for the transmission, we just flipped it around and drilled new holes in the sub frame. We had a little issue with the cross member not allowing the trans to sit all the way on the mount, so we took and pressed the front of the mount down so now it is level and the trans will fit.

Rear End- We got all of our 4-Link stuff and were going to test the outter links and realized that they hit the big tires we got back there. so what we did to fix that issue was we cut a notch into the frame rails to move the link closer to the frame rail. We moved it over a 1/2 inch. Going to work on getting the rest of the 4 link in to the car this weekend.

Now for the good stuff!!!

After 5 months of not updating I figure I need to put in an update of what has been accomplished. Since my last update I have gotten the 4-link finished up and the car now rolls!!! We have also got some Dart Pro 1 heads for the car. I have just finished up welding in the subframe connectors. Later today we are going to repaint the engine and heads since we have changed them. Tomorrow I plan on modifying my gas tank to hold in the 4th Gen fuel pump. I hope to at least have the car start by next weekend, we'll see if we make it.

Time for pictures!
Here is the 4 link just tacked in.

Tell us more about your four link. I don't recognize the brackets. Is is homemade or did you buy the parts/kit from someone. I see you're using heim joints instead of the more street-friendly delrin joints. What else?
I like your leaf spring pockets! I had to do the same on mine to fit my 335s.

I have to give credit where credit is due. Your build is where we got the idea to do the spring hanger mod. The 4 link is a bolt in ride tech unit with weld on lower axle brackets.

In the past months plans have changed for the better, I am now going fuel injected. I got also got some Dart pro 1 heads for the car. So in order to fuel inject it we had to modify the gas tank to fit the 4th gen fuel pump. We didn't want to cut a hole in the trunk so we just built a box to recess the pump in the tank. it was fairly simple to do just a little help from a sheet metal break and a welder. Come the first of the year I will run some fuel lines and hope to hear it run. We are waiting to get the ls wiring harness and computer back from the guy doing the tune.

The hole in the tank for the box

Here is how the coil over mounts to the bottom of the control arm

To put the top in you just unscrew the screw on the knob and then the nut is on the coil over

Hard to tell from the angle of the pics, but do you have a surge box around the pump inside the tank?
Without one, she'll cut out on corners with anything less than 1/3 or a tank......had a 70 Camaro with EFI, and the guys who set it up didn't think about a surge tank......PITA going quick around corners, lol.

Leigh, he won't need a surge tank....the 4th gen fuel bucket "is" in itself a surge tank. I'm using this exact setup...I too recessed the pump so I would not have to cut the trunk. Works great! I've run it down to 1/8 a tank without any issues. I'm using the built in fuel regulator too.

When I installed my setup, I did not want to run the used pump that came with the bucket. I had no idea how many miles or hours were on it. For piece of mind, I disassembled the bucket and put a new GM pump in. While I had the bucket apart, I shortened the fuel lines so I could compress the spring on the fuel bucket the most without kinking the lines. I could not use the 4th gen sender...wrong ohm setup for my guage. I reused my 78 (0-90 ohm) sender....I did have to bend the guage arm a little to work with the 4th gen bucket in there. Car looks great! Good luck,

Leon

Since my last update I have have gotten a lot of little things done on the car. The biggest of the things is that it now runs. I am currently working on the brakes so we can make it move under its own power.

Engine: To get the car running I got the harness all plugged in, made plug wires since I relocated the coils. I relocated the coils behind the fenders. To do so I built some brackets to hold the coils, I also machined the spacers between the coils. I then mounted them to the firewall using riv nuts. Once the fenders are on and inner fenders in the car you will hardly see them at all. While cleaning up the engine compartment I also decided to shorten the dipsticks for both the oil and trans. We also made some lines for the power steering pump. I also got my valve covers to fit. The adapters we got had to be modified to run the 400 valve covers instead of the sbc ones. We had to weld some aluminum blocks to the bottom of the adapter so we could drill into them and still have something to mount them too. After all that was done we were ready to fire it up. When we first fired it up it ran for maybe 15 seconds and didnt have any oil pressure. To get oil pressure we drained all the oil out and put it all back it through the oil pressure sending unit to get it primed. once it was all back in we started it back up and the pressure started climbing up to 60psi. Its just running straight headers right now. I also relocated the battery.

Floor Pans: Since the car is going to be low and we don't want anything dragging or hanging down we decided to lift the floor pan under the rear seat. We ended up lifting it about 3 inches. To do so we cut out the old pan, then I made a new template out of cardboard. I then traced it onto a flat sheet of metal and used the plasma cutter and cut it out. Once welded in I made another piece for the bottom to fill in the gap between the lifted floor and where the old floor was that was on top of the frame rail. Now I can tuck my mufflers up higher in the car so they don't hang down.

Brakes: I am currently working on the brakes. I have gotten all of mocked up, we have to make a few changes. The rear rotors are not sitting flush on the axle so we are going to machine the axle down a little bit so the rotor will fit flush. After we get that done I will get them all put on and start running brake lines. While I had the axles out a couple weeks ago I wanted to put longer wheel stud on them. I think they look cool is why I wanted to change them. We could not find any to fit the holes in the axle so we got some that we a bit bigger. To make them fit we went up to the machine shop and reamed them out to where they would fit. The holes are within .001 in of being center.

We are also having the driveshaft shorten 2 1/2 inches. All this is what has been done in the past 3 months.

Bought some front tires today. We bought some Falken 275/40/17s, now we can roll the car around. We were using some 15's on the front to roll it around but when i put on my new brakes that wheel was too small lol. hoping to have it roll under its own power this weekend. I just have to run some more brake line and it should be good to roll on its own. NO MORE PUSHING.

It seems like not much has been going on with the car recently, but a lot has happened just cant tell. since the last update we have been doing TONS of sanding getting the car ready to paint. We bought a new hood and it fit great. We also bought a fiberglass front and rear bumper, they didn't fit well at all. so the past few weekends we have been working on the front bumper cutting and glassing to make it fit right. Since we are using the fiberglass one we have built some supports inside them, that way we dont have to use the heavy stock supports. We have also jammed the doors. I am also changing headlights going to a 90 caprice headlight. This headlight completely fills up the bezel so no need for a filler piece like used on the year one car. The tail lights i also changed. I have modified them to fit the sequential led housings. Everything on the car is ready for paint except the front and rear bumpers. they should be ready by the end of the weekend hopefully! Then paint is next!!!

Almost forgot we took it to a carshow and got 1st in the under construction category. LOL

On to some Pictures.

We are going to make it functional. So we are going to build a base to mount it to as well as hold the air cleaner.

so its been awhile since i updated but we are still working on the car. The car is now painted! we have also changed the rear spoiler on the car to a early 70's camaro spoiler and also made it 3" taller. The spoilers did not fit at all so we have added and modified the spoilers to fit perfect on the car. We are on the down hill side just have to reassemble everything now, put in the vintage air, roll cage, and build a mount for the air cleaner. Hoping to be at good guys on Oct 3rd in Texas.

Heres some pics of the spoiler being built
