I stumbled across this resource last week. It's what GM calls their Upfitter Integration Program, and in it are various technical articles on how to best adapt a customers application to a GM commercial-class chassis, such as building an ambulance. It is one of the best sources of technical knowledge for modifying vehicle chassis and electrical systems that I have ever seen. Being that it's published by GM, and is free, we should all take advantage of this information so we can properly modify our cars in a safe and reliable way.

Here's the link for the electrical systems. There are plenty of back-to-basics as well as more technical information. http://www.gmupfitter.com/publicat/electrical.pdf

Ford and Chrysler have similar also. Used to have them on file when I worked for an armoring company.
